― JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)
it appears to be one of those books where the author is the main character. ie it is about "bret easton ellis."

"Imperial Bedrooms" is out very soon. Anyone else care? I do.
― krakow, Monday, 7 June 2010 13:30 (fifteen years ago)
Have you read the first chapter here?:http://www.esquire.com/fiction/bret-easton-ellis-imperial-bedrooms-excerpt-0610
I have the feeling it is going to be like LOST season 6. (even begins in LA X)
― Philip Nunez, Monday, 7 June 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)
I care, and have been sent an advance copy, which I can't crack until I file on a deadline.

I care too, I enjoyed the Vanity Fair interview and rebought LTZ today for a re-read.

Is this another Lunar Park-style meta novel?
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 15:28 (fifteen years ago)
A sequel to Less Than Zero no less.
― disastrous sixth series (MaresNest), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)
I'm not sure how meta it's supposed to be -- I get the feeling from the first chapter that a character who isn't Bret Easton Ellis (and appears in Less Than Zero) had written a Less Than Zero-ish book that they made a movie of, but I'm not sure which character that is.
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:07 (fifteen years ago)
IIRC most of the major characters from LTZ are featured in it. Clay is now a screenwriter I think, much like BEE is now.
― disastrous sixth series (MaresNest), Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)
I'm thinking the character that stands in for BEE is Daniel or Trent. Maybe this was always the case?
― Philip Nunez, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 17:14 (fifteen years ago)
i actually cant wait for this i really should read lunar park tho

The kids need education And the streets are never clean I've seen a certain disposition, prevailing in the wind, Sweet change if anybody's listening? Emergency on Planet Earth Is that life that I am witnessing Or just another wasted birth
We got emergency Emergency on Planet Earth
Think we're standing for injustice White gets two and black gets five years, Took me quite a while to suss this, But now I know my head is cleared And a little boy in hungry land, is just a picture in the news, Change shoes Won't see him in the TV advertising, Cause it might put you off your food

Dude's bi. Thought the whole world knew it.
― WHEN CROWS GO BAD (suzy), Thursday, 17 June 2010 16:08 (fifteen years ago)
No, I only found out by reading last Sunday's Los Angeles Times. The drugs thing I had a little hunch about. I don't consider writing a very honourable pursuit so I don't pay attention to writers much,.
― admrl, Thursday, 17 June 2010 16:12 (fifteen years ago)
I mean what I'm saying is that they aren't important
― admrl, Thursday, 17 June 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, also, the whole world that knew about it didn't really give a toss.

just finished imperial bedrooms -- it's very short and linear. I get the sense that it is in the same universe as less than zero and the book that represents 'less than zero' which a movie was made out of their lives with was a different book/movie altogether, but the writer of that book can't be twitter BEE because he didn't go to the fictional college mentioned. Maybe it is Lunar Park BEE that wrote it?
― Philip Nunez, Friday, 25 June 2010 17:29 (fifteen years ago)
This long interview/conversation is pretty interesting.
I just read Imperial Bedrooms. Enjoyed a lot of it. Much less ambiguous in its plotting than I expected. The section that Ellis describes as the most controversial with his editor is also the one that took me out of the book for a bit, kind of like "Mother" on Synchronicity.

Also interested in how he actively resists being identified as a gay writer, much like a pop singer (more than a novelist) not wanting to get pigeonholed.
