It's a lager, not a tune

When I was a lad, Oranjeboom was a nasty looking, Skol-like tinned beer. It was TV advertised by (I think) buxom bavarian wenches singing (to the tune of Eye Level by the Simon Park Orchestra) "OranjeBOOM, OranjeBOOM, it's a lager, not a tune/OranjeBOOM, the order of the day/OranjeBOOM, OranjeBOOM, it's a lager, not a tune/So get your lips around a pint today". It was terrible.

Then it vanished for about ten years, and now it's meant to be a fancy premium beer, and it turns up in nice bars with nice drinks, alongside the Duvels and the Chimays. How did it happen? Doesn't anybody remember? I feel cheated.

it's not a drug. it's a drink.

It's been on tap in the Betsey Trotwood, Farringdon since at least 1998.

You can still get knock down crates of it at Iceland, but as for the othermatter I think its called Brand Relaunch.

Maria :D (Maria D.), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

Ha, the only associations I have with it involve the Betsey Trotwood, yes.

It's a Schlager, not a tune.

it's originally dutch but is now "brewed under licence" in bedford or some other such end-of-civilisation hellhole. it tastes like arse but it's 5% abv and you can get 8 cans for a fiver in some places, so it's perfectly acceptable to give it to guests you don't like very much.

8 for a fiver in bargain booze. great when money's tight at the end of the month.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:17 (twenty years ago)

i actually think this beer is the reason that lager top or lager and lime were invented.

stelf)xxx, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

The brand was bought by Allied Breweries in 1968, who sold it on to Interbrew (now InBev) in the 1990s, apparently.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:22 (twenty years ago)

YES! YES! It's horrible! But cos it comes out of big tall fancy looking pumps, people believe it's good. It makes me a bit angry, but more, it makes me worry which big tall fancy pumps I get tricked by...

(xpost) Ah, that's starting to make some sense.

I just had a Mexican variant called a michilada, which has beer, lime juice, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce. I liked it, although apparently many Mexicans don't.

What's up with the Red Bull prominence? My barfly days are in the past, but even I did not dare to assume that caffeine and alcohol could be consumed in immoderation at the same time!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:34 (twenty years ago)

Move along Grandad.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

Grandmom. Oh, that's right, I was doing cocaine at the time!

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

oh so it's a lager! we saw bars seemingly called "ORANJBOOM" in amsterdam and i was curious, but not so much that i bothered asking

Slumpman (Slump Man), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

What would happen if you drank an Oranjboom and then an Irn Bru?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

maybe you'd end up wearing a kilt and clogs with your finger up a dyke?

aimurchie (aimurchie), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Um, Momus to thread?
