does anyone else worry about, oh you know, do those people on ILM/ILE *like me*? I do, it's a major deal 'cause I discovered these things soon after moving to a new town where I never hang out with people in R.L. (it's some kind of computer nerd slang for "real life")(i read somewhere). so this, uh, IS my "social life". & you know, i have posted lots of pretty ill considered stuff that if i read it & it was someone else i'd think, Man what a dick. so i worry. how bout you?

duane z., Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I realize that i am clever and charming. People must like me

You do dont you ?

anthony, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yeah sure, you seem cool. (do i have to anwer this for everyone?)( were you asking me?)

duane, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I do worry some, actually. You don't get much feedback on here. Duane = coolness, the starting post to your thread on old people in particular is a Classic.

Patrick, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Everyone here seems pretty okay! Cool bunch of people, feel a little out of my depth sometimes, but nevermind!

james e l, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Sometimes, I do worry cos I have posted some lame-brained stuff and I decided to give the place a break for a while, but I just cant. It's too addictive. As for yourself Duane, I need someone around who also has a lackadaisical attitude to bathing. Down with soap!!!!

Michael Bourke, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

4 sure I worry sometimes, but then i think - ehy, I can't piss off all the people all of the time...

Geoff, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You are all wonderful and you want to have my babies, which is a wonderful ego boost, let me tell you. No, no need to thank me.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd love to hang out with many of you more often than I do. It's great fun.

Robin Carmody, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ned, I'll only have your babies if you treat me right.

Josh, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I worry constantly whether people like me or not. However I am inoffensive enough that most people kind of do. Or at least tolerate me.

Ally C, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nice to know that folks here are as harmlessly paranoid as yours truly.

Personally, I am constantly awed by both the amount of knowledge & learning nonchalantly offered up by the folks involved with this ILM/E venture, and the relaxed, good-natured atmosphere engendered by these very same folks. Finding such a combination of brain power and general humility is a rare find, and I'm mighty glad I found this place.

But I'll stop before I get all emotional & stuff. *sniff* Oh, damn, I promised... *snort* Must have something in my eye...

David Raposa, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Honestly, I don't care if any of you like me. I prefer it if you all hate me, actually. I find that more amusing. Sorry to be the rain on the parade. I don't actually hate anyone here though, to make myself sound less jerky.

Ally, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You're better than friends, coz I don't havta be there for y'alls in yer hour of need.

Sterling Clover, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

At long last, I can confess that I *hate* Ally's guts. FEH!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I know you've been waiting for the opportunity, I'm glad to give it to you.

Ally, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, stop talkin' tuff and give us a hug.

David Raposa, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm fairly certain I irritate the heck out of the majority of people on the boards, but c'est la vie. I like everyone here, for whatever that's worth.

Nicole, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You don't irritate me, Nicole.

Ally, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nor me.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Since I am a complete misanthrope and hate *all* people categorically, I will actually go and say "Well, I don't hate you personally, Nicole"... ;-)

masonic boom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nicole you are the best. SO STOP PUTTING YOURSELF DOWN!!

(We will do that when it becomes necessary.)

(Or amusing.)

mark s, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

The thing is, Nicole came up with more random vicious attacks on Fred than I ever could on this board, and how can I not respect that? Plus we are freakily similar, right down to having sisters that apparently look exactly alike. Hating Nicole would be like hating a smarter, nicer version of myself, which just wouldn't work out.

Ally, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I am totally impressed by: a) the range of people and styles we get posting on these boards and b) the fact that so few of these people say stupid or annoying things. I think probably the best testimony I can make is that I don't read the stuff contributed by my real-life friends any differently to the stuff contributed by my real-life don't-knows.

I 'like' people - the same people, often - more on ILE than ILM, as a rule, because it's a looser atmosphere.

Tom, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

To add to all this -- Nicole ist rad. AND DAMN ANYONE WHO SAYS OTHERWISE!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I second that, I cant think of anything irritating that Nicole has ever said. I think you're being very hard on yourself.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I found it slightly irritating when she tempted me with a pint and then did not send it in the mail. Only slightly though.

Josh, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm sorta new here, but these are my thoughts:
Duane, you are very cool and have excellent taste in music, so I always read your posts.
Anthony, you are sweet and funny and are obviously thoughtful, so don't worry about your spelling. As a straight womyn, I enjoy your posts on men's sexiness. You are my dumpster divin', thrift lovin' buddy!
Kate is hilarious - don't worry about the PDA. Ally is funny, too.
I can always count on Ned to defend some music that I like that nobody else does. And he's funny, too, plus he's a library worker bee like me.
Tom is a damn good writer.
Suzy is smart and kool.
I'm sorry, but Mike Hanle y makes me laugh real hard. What a trashy boy.
I enjoy the lot of you, too, even if I didn't mention you by name. Hell, you're all funny. I'm so glad we had this breakthrough encounter session. Now go post some shit.

Kerry Keane, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Aw, thanks for the kind words -- I wasn't fishing, honest. I occaisonally get irritated by the things I write, so I suspected a lot of other people must as well. At least now I know I was partially correct, since I've had my writing pronounced "boring" and "into self- promotion" over on ILM. The boring part I can completely understand, but I don't see where I have been promoting myself. Ah well.

Nicole, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I worry constantly whether people like me or not. However I am inoffensive enough that most people kind of do. Or at least tolerate me.
-- Ally C (allycook96@hotmail.com), July 15, 2001.

I misread this as coming from the other Ally, and I was like 'whh-aatt??'. Then I read her actual response and all was right with the world.

I want to be liked by everyone. It's my character flaw. However, there are lots of people I don't much care for on ILE & ILM, and plenty more who are great online but would probably not be great at all in person. That's why the interweb is so great - you can get away with being a social retard.

Nick, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

are you saying being a "social retard" is bad?

duane, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Now that's one of the reasons why I kind of admire Nick D - his unfailing honesty.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nicole: Holy shit, they're pronouncing each other's faults on ILM?!?! I need to go read it, why wasn't I alerted?

Nick: Quite frankly, I think most people who come off as likeable online are really irritating in real life. That's why I just hate everyone blanketly.

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Check out this thread. You're included in the insult- fest as well.

To be quite honest this has been a very depressing week for me so this was kind of the last straw for me. I don't real feel much inclination to write anything now.

Nicole, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Greenspun software somehow managed to mess up boring, self-promoting Nicole's link. It's here

I'm not irritating in real life. In fact I'm really great. Although I'm told I don't swear as much.

Blue writing Nick, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nic (not to be confused with Nick), I saw it already, I raged against the machine, and I'm not going back. I mean, it's one thing to call ME annoying because after a few personal experiences with people on ILM and of course just the general attitude of a few months ago, I was all about being obnoxious for a while there. So I'm all for that. But you?! WTF? And that's real rich coming from someone who posts random crazy insults towards people using fake names/emails and flies off the handle if you make something even remotely disparaging towards rural life.

Babe, don't worry, everyone loves you, at least the important people. That message board is useless (and no, I'm not trying to start a this- board-is-better-than-your-board pissing contest here so don't worry DG :), it has been for ages because it was taken over by pedants and sad boys and fan boys and quite frankly who needs it? Hell, I'm going to just start posting about music here anyhow if I feel like talking about music because there are certain people (who are in no way psuedo-famous, no of course not) who if I read ONE MORE WORD BY, I will shoot myself thru the forehead, never mind the class wars and the threads about bloody mixtape segs.

Rant over. I like you, Nicole, but what do I know, I'm a boring useless self-promoting git too. ;)

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Nicole, don't sweat it too hard. You can't get along with everyone and some people have a very hard time reading the correct tone of what people say. Judging from the response on that thread and this one, I think you'd have to start eating babies before the majority of the people around here got mad at you, and even then they'd say, "Ooh, look at how adorable Nicole is when she noshes on little Matthew!" for a while first.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm a "trashy boy"? WHat the...in a goo d way? I am already trying to recover from someone callin g me "small town minded". (mumbles to self as stumbling off in daze "a trashy boy?? ...trashy?....)

Wow, I'm getting the feeling like when Worker's Liberty split from the SWP over the fact that Marx said he wasn't a Marxist.

I've got to say I'm with Ally vis a vis ILM. Not posted there since this has been up and talking about music here in the ramshackle manner we do is fine and dandy.

Pete, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

In many ways, this is exactly like the Spanish Civil War.

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Whats happening I think is that the part of ILM that was stripped away when ILE formed was the invisible socialising glue, the bit that reminded you that posters were real people rather than walking opinions. Hence squabbling. So what ILM is now is an intelligent and quite superior music board but it's lost some of its range and also its connection to 'real life' which was/is/can be what I really love about it.

I'm also blocked completely currently when it comes to talking abt music so take the above with a pinch of salt.

The test for a themed message board like ILM is how to accomodate opinions and styles with mutual respect. The test for an online community (ILE being the first thing I've ever participated in which feels like one - interesting how I was totally anti internet community say 2 months ago, like Mark S. talking about falling in love, it was something I discovered which I did not know was there to be discovered) is what happens when the online group is tested by offline developments i.e. real life encounters, pairings off (and it will happen), dislikes and disappointments....

Tom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I just read that thread over on ILM. Christ, how depressing. I'm not usually prone to public outbursts of YOU ARE GOOD-ness, but I feel like I should say that:

1/ nicole's posts = fine by me & most often very interesting. Please do not stop posting.

2/ likewise ally. I had the big row with ally at one point, but so the fuck what. She posts loads of interesting/funny/insightful etc stuff.

I don't think there's anyone on this board who's company I'd avoid. You all rule.

Apologies for gushy crap. Blame that ILM thread, which was quite upsetting. Normal service now r3sumedx0r.

xoxo

Norman Fay, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Agreed, which is why my opinion of ILM had gone from steadily dropping to complete rock bottom. Not to get into details here but sometimes get togethers and such do NOT help (please do not get offended whoever is reading this, chances are if you were just at a meet and we had limited interaction, I'm not really talking much about you).

It's just that I don't see the point of a completely strict topic of conversation. It's like you're back in school to go on ILM some days. Which is great but doesn't anyone want to talk about things tangentially related to music? I understand that the board is called I Love Music but it's an offshoot of Freaky Trigger which discusses things tangentially related and sometimes not at all related - so what's the big deal? *shrugs*

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

All roads lead to music anyways. (tart)

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Well, since I started That Other Thread anyway, I feel I should apologize for stirring up the hornet's nest! Which was not my plan, of course. Hrm.

Pretty much all the things sensible that can be said have been said. I freely admit that I still inhabit both boards because, well, the subject matters interest me. *shrug* The people, that's a different story. Doompatrol can just go hang, but then again he's stringing himself up quite nicely, thank you.

Nicole ist rad -- said it before, said it again. Spare her a thought, folks, she's said she's had a bad week, so let's make it better for her. And right now I know Ally is the all-around happiest she's been in a long, long time, and believe you me, I am very, very glad for that. :-) Knowing good people like both of them makes life worth it, and what's even cooler is that there are many others out there equally deserving. :-)

And thanks to Kerry! Hey, I just bop around, call me the egomaniacal aggrandizer of self-pantheons who likes laughing at himself every day. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Tom, here's that pinch of salt (again?):

I'm afraid I think that reports of ILM's decline have been exaggerated. OK, ILE has filtered some stuff off it - maybe some good stuff, some bad stuff. But ILM is still, in principle, a good place for talking about pop music, which is a thing most of us like one way or another. I think both fora have some good things, some not so good things; in both places, some posters I enjoy more than others. Which is probably kind of predictable, really.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Pinefox: thanks for the salt. ILM has been rather peppery of late.

Like I say, I keep expecting to wake up and find that i) I want to write about music and ii) I want to write about music in a way that will fit with ILM. Currently it's not really happening, but I agree that ILM is probably not to blame for that.

Tom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Damnit Mike, why am I a tart?

Ned, you are far too smiley faced! Don't worry about any rubbish about starting threads or whatever, no one started anything but the person who said the comment that is tweaking everyone out right now. So chill, you're all good. And yes, I am annoyingly happy and drippy and ridiculous, I don't even know if I can pull off being an asshole at the meet in August, damnit.

pinefox: No, you're right, neither board is perfect. It depends on how much time you have to devote, how many issues you want to discuss, and how much thought you want to put into things. The posting styles on either board are also very different so depending on your POV one is going to be better than the other. Clearly ILM isn't doomed or about to keel over; it's just that for some people it has no use anymore, or very limited use. It's all good.

Everything is all good.

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Everything is all good.

Look here, i'm sorry, but Ally is a regular poster here and you can't just go round nicking her name and e-mail address like this. We've had problems with your sort before.

Tom, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Oh, you prankster, Tom. I love you, just like I love everyone else. Like Ned said, I'm freakishly happy.

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'd just like to point out that I was not the one who suggested we basically turn into THB-era Manics. That was Ned. End of public service announcement.

Ally, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

From my own standpoint, ILE has lost some of the rawkus out-of- nowhere zinger feel that discussions could take on ILM. As it is, I'm finding occasional great threads on ILM and ILE both. But they tend to be the ones where interesting discussion is transpiring about culture -- Film and Books now relegated to ILE. Generally, I don't think I have the sort of personality for ILE, to sort of just ramble on and be goofy and such. Either a discussion goes somewhere or it doesn't, and I'm finding it difficult to break through my sort of analytical frame of mind and just act sociable.

I'd rather more interesting things were happening in music. That would generate the discussion on its own.

Mike Hanle y, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It may be me, but think sometimes that ILM has taken a slightly rockist turn. I miss the in-depth discussions of house, techno, 2step, whatever. But still enjoy it as a place to chat abt music and (being a 'sad boy' 'fan boy') learn stuff abt stuff. Or have my mind changed/eyes opened - such revelation a great feeling.

Keeping in tune with today's slightly para air, have y'all received directions to the free jazz jamboree yet (which I am still v. v. nervous abt.)

I am not going to leave ILM no matter how catty and nasty and "I hate Poster X" it gets. Because to leave is to let them win. I try to tone myself down a bit in ILM because, yes, I am afraid of straying "off topic" in a way that I don't fear here. But I'm not prepared to surrender civilisation to the barbarians just yet. *I* have, (and Ally and Nicole have) just as much right to be there as the jerkass "Walking Opinions" do. It's as simple as that.

Mike Hanle y, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Kate, that's all well and good but quite frankly it just doesn't matter that much to me anymore. Winning used to be everything, even in something like that which I had no interest in, because it was fun to be right and piss people off, but I just can't be bothered now. If I wanted to win and be a jerk, as I would've done a few weeks ago even, I would've pointed out that the Americans that Poster X was in a rush to point out that he liked, thus not being xenophobic, were all male whereas everyone he had called out on the thread (3 people - unless I missed a post) were all female, but that's not my style anymore to be honest (though I suppose I just did it, hoping that the boy don't read this board much). IT'S ALL GOOD. Just say that with me. IT'S ALL GOOD.

Ally, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

No, it's not amusing, but it's also possibly nothing, so it's not worth thinking about.

Ally, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Since I am record, elsewhere on the Omni- Beeotch, as saying that I am FOND of Poster [x] (which in fact remains true: tho I currently have several Very Cross Reasons also for wanting to Kick His Sorry Arse) and that he makes a (what did I say?) "valuable and distinctive contribution" (also true: even if it reads like The Headmaster from Hades), can I just also stress publicly that I AM TOTALLY ON POSTER [Y]'s SIDE IN THIS AFFAIR: and that anyone who claims not to grasp the as-or maybe-more-important contribution [Y] makes every day [tho *not* I'm sad to say today] is plainly being a clown and a twerp, with Brane switched totally to Off. This is not about taste: it is about the polyvalent and multiform nature of intelligence. An all-boy board excludes me too: because I will no longer be *able* to think. That is (pompously but honestly) all.

I, too noticed the sex divide in the complainers/complainees... typical, that.

I did not mean win, as in win an argument, I meant win, as in... well, more as in the sense of, they win a moral victory over us which they have no right to claim.

I am *trying* very hard to avoid threads which just turn into personal arguments, and simply state my opinions without bringing down any judgements. I refuse to leave because of anyone there. Just because I wouldn't want any of them to leave simply because they disliked me.

masonic boom, Wednesday, 18 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Josh, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I guess my think is that I'm a total theory-head, and I like ILM when we're throwing around mad ideas, and less so when we're doing a CoD where it all tends to blend together. I mean, there needs to be interaction between opinions for interesting sparks to fly, and that interaction requires more than just giving a rating. Although, I admit, I'm as guilty as any of doing exactly that. Maybe now I'll change my evil ways...

Well, a lot of the COD/SD threads could weather injections of theory I think. I will post something to the TSAC thread, for instance, and see what it does for you.

kate, i was a little unclear, sorry. i knew you didn't mean win in that sense. your use of 'not letting them win' was, in my view, commendable, as you meant people shouldn't be forced off threads as the 'forcers' then win. with this i agree.

gareth, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

yeah same. i thought you were bad-rapping robin . uh sorry.

duane, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

For the record, I wasn't bad-rapping Robin, or anyone else (except maybe DP). I *am* bad-rapping this whole confrontational them vs. us attitude, this whole culture of pointing at some posters as being boring or finger pointing or whatever.

What I am saying, is that if we give up and let people force us off that board, then the culture of badness and confrontationalism wins.

The only person I have *ever* asked to have removed from any board was DP, because he seems unable to conform himself to even basic human laws of decency, let along netiquette.

Anyway...

I'm not bad-rapping anyone either, but doesn't overcapitulation to sensitive types MAKE IT WORSE sometimes? Like sending in Dr Christian Barnaard to check your blood pressure...

suzy, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I think that everyone, oversensitive types or no, has occasional bad days where they flip out and just go postal on someone for no real provoked reason. If they are big enough and grown up enough to apologise, work it out and get over it, I don't see that as over-capitulation. Everyone is human, to admit that you were wrong and move on is far more human than to not make a mistake in the first place.

It's people who are flaming arsewipes and then act wounded, like they've done nothing wrong, who get up my nose. But no more bitching...

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I just don't see how any of it really matters still. I don't understand that whole conspiracy-detecting bullshit up above either: who said anything other than you don't want to let one person push you off something you like (Kate) and that it struck me and Ned funny that the disliked ranted against people were female and the "good" people were male? No one even really accused anyone of anything. *shrugs* NOW THIS THREAD IS OVERREACTING NONE OF YOU ARE MY FWEINDS, I HATE YOU ALL.

Luv always.

Ally, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Yeah, Ally, I can't stand you, but I still stay on this board. ;-)

masonic boom, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

It is clear that everyone on this thread EATS BABIES. This is why I love you all.

I think I should probably put "so-and-so eats babies" in the catchphrase thread.

Oooh! Battle of the ILE Queen vs. the ILE Princess!

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I'm too tired for battles. I hate all of you, suffice to say. You're all horrible, horrible human beings and I hope that an atomic bomb of miniature proportions affects your housing situation. Sincerely, Me.

Ally, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

You get tartier every day.

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Ally, has that not already happened to one of the people on this board? What evil powers have you wrought?

Sonny, Thursday, 19 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Mike! Damn you!

And yes, it has already happened. I am like Storm, I control the weather and make lightning destroy people's homes.
