A friend bought this book for me and he is slightly hurt that I only got through about 5 pages. Will the effort be rewarded if I continue?

It has its moments. It's not as good as people who like it think it is, and it's certainly not as good as Henry Miller thinks it is. But when it goes all out on seedy grimness it's very enjoyable, a kind of Trainspotting for down at heel pseudo intellectuals.
