Most overrated sneakers?

I vote New Balance. They must have some sort of subliminal brainwashing campaign wherein everyone I know is under the impression that shoes don't get any more comfortable than New balances, like my feet will be floating around on pillows as soon as I tie them. In reality, the shoe never conforms properly to my foot, and although I've never had a problem with blisters in my life, now these fuckers give me blisters any time I run or walk more than a half a mile. I'm sticking with my reebok classics.

Fuck a new balance!

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I also vote any basketball shoes designed after '96, when suddenly they all started looking nasty unless you were wearing official starter shorts. Early 90s basketball shose could be worn with jeans and they looked raw.

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

I would say Dunks but that's probably a little too obvious. Asics Tigers, on the hand, will never be overrated! Says me.

air force 1s. i love them, but after seeing the 5000th fake louis vuitton/gucci/ysl etcetc poorly stitched trim bootleg you get kinda sick of them. i said it before but the sleek severity of classics over air force 1s anyday (everyday).

I like the white reebok classics, they are much more summer-y.

when i ran an image search for reebok classics in yahoo it came up with all this weird gay porn showing a guy just resting his dick on different pairs of reeboks.

In reality, the shoe never conforms properly to my foot

maybe it's your foot that's the problem and not the sneaker? saying a sneaker is "overrated" because it doesn't conform to YOUR FOOT OMG WTF is seriously fucking obnoxious.

sittin here la la waitin for my ya ya (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

Addidas are horrible if you actually use them to do athletic things. A few years ago I bought a pair of hi-top b-ball ones -- because they are just about the only brand that don't make horrible tacky, gaudy b-ball shoes with a lot of shiny plastic and busy designs --- and the sole started falling apart after using them just a couple times. I bitched to headquarters, and they sent me a new pair, and the same shit happened.

oops (Oops), Monday, 15 August 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

i didn't like the instep on my old nike crosstrainers, but i may have just needed a wider width or something.

word on the New Balance thing - it's like the indie joggers underdog choice but to me they fit like shit! And ditto on the unsportability of Adidas shoes - they're FLAT! - I tried to dance in my brother's skate ones and it was HELLLL

deej.., Monday, 15 August 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

i disagree with these adidas unsportablity charges based on some great pairs of tennis shoes i've owned, specifically these edberg torsion things i wish wish wish they still made. and their soccer (hi i'm a american) stuff is pretty classic and comfy and generally great. beckenbauer liga!

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 15 August 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah i think they still do tennis shoes pretty well. i should've restricted my complaint to b-ball and shell-toe-type addidaseses.

oops (Oops), Monday, 15 August 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Converse Chuck Taylors... ugh. Flat, miserable POS shoes. Never understood the appeal functionally nor visually.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 15 August 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

It's the shoe's JOB to conform to your foot. I mean, who's in charge here? Does your head conform to your pillow?
The shoes that HURT me, two (slow learner) pairs in a row are Sauconys. They developed a lump in the sole that poked right into the ball of my foot. A couple of times I actually took the shoe off and looked to see if I had a rock in it. Bad. Back to Nikes.

Beth Parker, Monday, 15 August 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

I sprained my ankle badly a couple years ago in some sauconys. They were kinda gross but kinda cool, blue camo pattern! I didnt hate them.

Most people somewhat OTM except about New Balance. I have very wide feet with high arches. My *suede* New Balance sneakers are sooooo comfortable and outlast everything else I have ever owned. Best walking shoes ever.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Monday, 15 August 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Let me just get in line behind HJF with the NBs and also Sauconys -- I have wide toes, high arches, and I supinate. If this isn't true of your feet, I'm sure there's some better-fitting shoe out there for you.

Laurel, Monday, 15 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Y'all got some weird-ass dogs. Maybe you need to check out the orthopedic catalogs.
I actually have high arches too. A friend of mine gets special orthotics for her shoes. Once she gave me the original insert that came with her running shoes and I doubled up. It didn't really work.
Skateboarding shoes like Vans, Sketchers, etc are terrible for me. Huge uncozy toe box, no arch support at all. I like the snugness of a running shoe even though I just use them for work and walking.

Beth Parker, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 01:30 (twenty years ago)

Um, you're supposed to buy the shoe that fits you. New Balances happen to be the only ones that fit me, since no one else bothers to make wide widths anymore. Saying they're generally overrated because they don't fit YOU is borderline retarded.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Plus they're one of few sneaker-makers that manages to design styles that are neither from space nor from a 1970s fashion shoot.

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I dont hate on Chuck Taylors, but then again, I dont think of them as a sports shoe of ANY kind so I wouldnt be pissed off that they werent pillowy soft. They're a fashion shoe! They dont count here.

strng hlkngtn, Wednesday, 17 August 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

new balance running shoes i have owned wore out in the heel, plastic showed through, hurt bad. i have some pumas that fit wonderfully (gigantic narrow feet, high arches), but the mesh wore through where the bone sticks out under my pinky toes! this happened to my friend, also. i don't want to buy new shoes ever though. hmm.........

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

Funny no one has mentioned the terrible stench of Keds, which were the default sneaker when I was a kid back in the day. Why did they amplify natural foot aroma that way? Chucks are similar. The cushier shoes must have some kind of baking-soda layer in there. Not that they don't get that catpiss smell after a while. But the keds got it RIGHT AWAY.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

From Nike, I prefer Terra Humara Classics which aren't as fetishized as much as Dunks but still have a great design/style being pumped up (okay, there are 3 camo versions including a B'Ape but I stayed far away).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

most currently overrated shoe: GOLA. holy fuck, could a shoe get any uglier??

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 17 August 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

ALL skateboarding trainers are depressingly ugly, but at least they have a specific function that I presume largely determines their shape.

I like skating sneaks! Although I tried a pair on (globe i think?) and they were surprisingly uncomfortable too. I'm sure it varies a lot by brand and model though.
