Michael Owen

Apparently Newcastle have agreed a club record fee with Real Madrid, but Owen has said he'll only go to Newcastle if it's for a year-long loan. I just don't see it myself - surely he'll end up back at Liverpool? This seems to be a bit like the Rooney transfer last summer, where nobody really thought he would go to Newcastle and their sole function seemed to be to drive the asking price upwards.

Anyway, I don't understand why he doesn't get more games at Real. It's all very well having a Galacticos policy for marketing reasons, but not if their fat has-beens.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

madrid have just signed two new strikers, and while ronaldo was not at his best last season, he got a decent goal tally and is far from a has-been (though he is a little on the podgy side). owen has done well at madrid, given his limited opportunities, but he is right to move along.

owen to newcastle is a lot more realistic than rooney to newcastle, given the stages they are at in their given careers. there was no shortage of takers for rooney, whereas i don't think the big three are interested in owen. liverpool, maybe, though - if they want owen, and match the asking price, he will choose them ahead of newcastle, of course.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Rafa clearly doesn't want him back.
The rest of us do!
He can always come to Accies for a year long loan if he wants!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

maybe wigan will have owen? (just a quick drive on the M58 from liverpool)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

poor MIchael Owen!

I sort of hate Newcastle. sorry.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:05 (twenty years ago)

I think the board probably want Michael back, but Rafa doesn't. Shades of "I asked for a sofa and they bought me a lamp", already. I think he probably will come back, though.

He would certainly be nuts to go to Newcastle, but it might make an entertaining new chapter in that long-running soap opera. Would make a mockery of his determination to leave LFC last year because he wanted to be playing in the very top flight.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

so was his move to real madrid a mistake in your opinions?

i think maybe it was.. but then again i dunno how well he would have done in liverpool had he stayed. i'm sure once upon a time he was like a fearsome striker who got defenders quaking in their boots like, but now it just doesn't seem like that.

and at 25(?) years you'd think he'd be at the peak of his game right now really?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:10 (twenty years ago)

I think Liverpool winning the European Cup has already made of mockery of his departure. (xpost)

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

haha but them winning the european cup made the mockery of a lot of things i guess

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:12 (twenty years ago)

He actually said something like "I've come to Real to win the Champions League" at the time. Roffle-fucking-Madrid, shortarse.

As a L'pool fan I'd love to see him back, although I'd quite like to see him go to another English club just to see the how hard the nutter in the Windmill punches the fruit machine.

On one hand I've got myself to blame (Lynskey), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Is that a euphemism for something?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

>He would certainly be nuts to go to Newcastle, but it might make an entertaining new chapter in that long-running soap opera.

F**k you.

Owen would most certainly not be nuts to go to Newcastle. NUFC are one of few clubs who a) want him (Benitez clearly doesn’t)
b) can afford him
c) can afford his wages
d) can guarantee him first-team football (no small consideration in World Cup year)

All that and the chance to become a Geordie legend. All he has to do is keep his goal to ratio going and the Toon Faithful will absolutely adore him - he already has a formidable record scoring at SJP ;-)

stevo (stevo), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah i heard those geordie lasses were sluts

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

Owen is the only thing that can rescue Souness, perhaps. But even with him and Shearer upfront a European place next season may still be a stretch. In this respect he is wise to make it a year loan only.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

(xx-post)Sarah Jessica Parker?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

He should go to Lyon.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

But even with him and Shearer upfront a European place next season may still be a stretch. In this respect he is wise to make it a year loan only.

but what if they DO get a european place, and then his contract runs out and newcastle don't want him back no more!?!??!?! he might have to go to liverpool with no champions league footie!!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

it's not very likely.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

Strangely, I think Lyon would be a better option. I agree that Europe is a distant possibility at best for Newcastle, whereas Lyon are a much better gamble, though the last performance I saw of them, against Marseille, they didn't look like the champions at all.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

If I was him I would have gone to Everton.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

it's not very likely.

yeah but liverpool won the champions league last season!

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Even so.

I don't think French club soccer is really an attractive prospect in spite of the Champions League aspect. He might as well go to Rangers (if they wanted him).

I would actually like to see him at Everton but I suppose in a way his loyalty to the Reds in this respect (assuming this is the main reason for not wanting to go there) is commendable(?)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps he is just scared of the boo boys. 'Booooo' they'll say. And loud.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

That's precisely what they do.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

his loyalty to the Reds in this respect

!!!!!??!??!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Was Owen a Liverpool fan as a kid? I keep forgetting which ones were Everton fans. Weren't most of the actual Scousers actually Everton supporters (McManmanmanmanman, Fowler, Gerrard, etc.)?

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Ken your keyboard is broken again.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

i thought my screen was broken when i read this!

his loyalty to the Reds

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

All that money spent on Peter Crouch is beginning to look even more foolish.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Did anyone hear Ally McCoist saying last night that "three of the top four" could do with a goalscorer like Owen, then citing Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. When did everyone suddenly write Thierry Henry off?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Owen was an Everton fan (his Dad played for them). Nearly all of the local-ish Liverpool players over the last decade or so were childhood Blues - Fowler, McManaman, Owen, even Carragher. Gerrard being a notable exception, despite the evidence of that jpg doing the rounds.

Venga (Venga), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 17:20 (twenty years ago)

i don't think he was writing henry off with that statement matt, just saying that arsenal could do with a goalscorer like owen *in addition* to henry. chelsea and 'pool do also have proven top-level goalscorers, lest we forget (morientes and crespo, that is).

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

i thought my screen was broken when i read this!

I didn't know Owen supported Everton as a kid, or I did but had forgotten. Presumably then it is Owen's loyalty to more money that would see him choose Newcastle over Everton?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

Or his fear of the boo boys who say boo loudly.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

[um, they don't say 'boo loudly', they say 'boo' loudly]

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

He's cute.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

I can't see that he'll be keen to go to Newcastle especially now that it looks as though they're going to be involved in a relegation fight rather than looking for a top 7 placing. Still no one else seems to want him, or can afford him so it may be a goer. Maybe since Rangers have made the group stages of the CL they may be interested, and crucially will have the money to take him.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

xpost he's well short though (heightwise that is.. not sure about penis)

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 25 August 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

Well done to The Sun for their headline summing all this up: Home But Not A Loan

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

I sort of hate Newcastle. sorry.

No need to apologise. Poor old Owen, imagine your only option was having to join Newcastle United and play for Graeme Souness, ouch!

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:14 (twenty years ago)

He's cute

If you like dull-as-dishwater types.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Owen was an Everton fan (his Dad played for them).

Hm. I thought he was a red. In fact there was a clip of him on Before They Were Famous and his teenage bedroom wall was covered in Liverpool pics and posters. Perhaps it was from before he was famous but after he switched sides. Or something.

But this whole business is an undignified rum do for such a prolific goal-scoring England player.

David Merryweather Goes To Far (scarlet), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

He has made his bed, and now he must lie in it.

Ideally he would go to Barcelona for a laugh.

Newcastle would be all right though.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 25 August 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Owen signs for Newcastle for £16 million breaking news shockah.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

their fans are the best in the world, he will be a real hero to them. they darn well love a goalscorer up north.

Alan Obvious (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

poor owen. poor alan too if he's going to take over the holding the ball up job

emily h (ken c), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

Newcastle have spent so much money this summer.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:37 (nineteen years ago)

So has Michael Jackson. He won.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yes but he didn't sexually abuse any children

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:41 (nineteen years ago)

TRUE

LeCoq (LeCoq), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:54 (nineteen years ago)

Signing players who don't want to play for you: c/d?

Pete W (peterw), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:57 (nineteen years ago)

as good an idea as signing for a club in turmoil!

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 08:58 (nineteen years ago)

signing someone who actually wants to play for newcastle would surely upset the ethos for the rest of the team?

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:02 (nineteen years ago)

that's a good point. i had forgotten context.

Pete W (peterw), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

I predict Newcastle will win the FA Cup.

Bizarro prospect: Owen beats Bobby Charlton's England international goal-scoring record but NEVER wins a league title.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

I hope Owen is judged a relative success at a team that proved to be something of a failure.

Am I talking about Real Madrid, Newcastle or Liverpool??!

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:07 (nineteen years ago)

He wouldn't win the title with Liverpool either. Jimmy Greaves never won a league title either (unless it was with Milan?), nor did Lineker in England.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

Nor did Kerry Dixon.

Pete W (peterw), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

I hear rumours that the next Merseysider to end up at Newcastle may be... David Moyes!

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:14 (nineteen years ago)

Kerry Dixon being the fifth most prolific scorer of all time for England, of course.

If Moyes goes we'll need to bring back Kendall for the 4th time.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:23 (nineteen years ago)

I just don't get why Owen chose Newcastle over Everton, or why Moyes would leave Everton for Newcastle.

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:25 (nineteen years ago)

Presumably it's just because Newcastle pay better wages.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:26 (nineteen years ago)

I can see Lil Mike playing for someone like Charlton or Bolton within two years.

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

He's got 'manchester city' written all over him.

Pete W (peterw), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:31 (nineteen years ago)

Where do you hear your rumours, Jerry? Radio Nipper?

I'm sure Newcastle will be, in estate agents' parlance, benefitting from Michael Owen.

Have they got any up and coming youngsters waiting in the wings for an opportunity to shine?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 09:36 (nineteen years ago)

in pro-evolution soccer 4, newcastle are formidable. (shearer kluivert and dyer were like superhumans.. very odd game)

Wow!

I was reading McCarra about Shearer and wondering where Owen would go. What a surprise!

I like what PJM says about Radio Nipper. It's true - the rumours' source is obscure!
