This is a deep and effective stretch. But if you're already in spasm (i.e., pain) go slowly. Easy does it.
1. Standing or seated, cross your elbows in front of your chest. The elbow that goes on top will be the one that gets the stretch.
2. Raise your forearms to vertical and lock your palms as shown in the image below.
3. SLOWLY raise your elbows as high and as far forward as is comfortable. Elbows at eye level is a good goal.
Keep your abs engaged so as not to cheat by curling your chest up. Cheating defeats the stretch and puts pressure on your lower back.
This pic shows the arm positioning pretty nicely. Don't worry about the legs - that's something else. Bonus points if you can rock the workout gear our computer-generated model is wearing.

As for the thread question, try ONE one-arm pushup with your hand at the same lateral point at yr shoulder, you'd be surprised how much one one-arm will unfuck a knotted shoulder/back.

Now on top of all that (or maybe this is the cause of it?) I have TMJD - jaw locking/popping/pain so bad I've had days where I cannot chew or open my mouth properly, and it has spazms. Just on the left side.
I think I need to see both a dentist and an osteopath. Ive taken so many painkillers my stomach's a complete mess.

I am going to find a really good dentist or orthodontist soon. I can't leave this alone much longer, it just keeps getting worse, and because when Im stressed I clench my teeth, it wont ever get better :(I'm scared I'll end up like that Simpsons episode where Cheif Wiggum opened his mouth too wide to eat the hoagie and locked up his jaw!

trayce i don't think it's the tmj, which i've lived with for a long time and which i can generally ascertain the symptoms of. but you never know with maxillofacial pain!
― s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 02:18 (nineteen years ago)
I shall now be paranoid all day and try to sit up straight for teacher, and stop clenching my teeth!
