Aldo in London FAP 11th September

As the Try Glasgow More people know, I often have vague work-related plans during which I try and FAP.

I need to be in London for at least one day between 13th and 16th September. I don't think, at present, I have any preference for any particular day. (This may change, but this may not matter)

1) Is anybody interested in a FAP on any of these evenings (including 12th, possibly)
2) If so, does anyone have any preference for a particular evening?

NB: I may not be able to make my own FAP once it's arranged. Work is capricious like that.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:17 (twenty years ago)

make it the 16th and then you can Poptimised with Adam.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 26 August 2005 09:20 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Poptimism is an excellent plan! Or come up on the 3rd for Orient-Bristol Rovers, though with my maths classes at Cambridge and all, I do realise the 3rd isn't strictly in the range 13-16 (cue Mark S to explain how it in fact is).

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 26 August 2005 11:28 (twenty years ago)

years are cyclical martin!! 13-16 is in fact the name for two ranges (one of four days, the other of 361 or 362 days, depending on leap year action)

(will that do?)

mark s (mark s), Friday, 26 August 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Also Julian Calendar nonsense!

Pete (Pete), Friday, 26 August 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

I'd love to come up for the Gas, but have plans for next weekend already. 16th was probably my least favoured of the dates, but may present the best solution.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 26 August 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

This overnight is looking increasingly like the 13th. Is London available, before I book myself into a hotel and make final arrangements?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 1 September 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

I should think I'd show up then.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 1 September 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

I can't be out late, as that's a school night, but if it's reasonably close to my work, I will come out for a swift half!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 1 September 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

OK, date set.

Is somewhere near Kate's work convenient for everybody?

In other words, London, suggest me a venue.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

Argh, oh no, near my work, but no inside the EEZOHAD...

Don't look at me, the last pub I picked was the Freemasons Arms and I'm not going there again!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, the nearest Sam Smiths pub is the Lyceum on the Strand, but no one ever wants to go down there, even though they have yummy poutine.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm staying in Waterloo, I think, so the Strand is very handy...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

It is very near Waterloo, just across the bridge.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 2 September 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

I am definitely in favour of yummy poutine, so barring objections I propose this as the venue.

(NB I am Trying Glasgow More all next week with work and with no access to ILX - London can feel free to debate this pub and tell me where we're FAPing as late as the 12th)

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 2 September 2005 10:08 (twenty years ago)

Yummy poutine and crap beer..sigh (what is it with Sam Smiths? They are the best rennovators of classic pubs bar none and they then put in crap beer with no guest beers?)

But as it's you, Mr Cowpat, I'll be there for a couple.

(I like the Freemasons...the pub, of course, not the 'society with secrets')

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 2 September 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

Aldo is nice, you should go to the pub with him.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 9 September 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

I know aldo is nice, ailsa - I have been to the pub with him on many occasions and he has even been known to occasionally stay sober. (actually, I made that last bit p...)

I assume you have been Glasgow FAPing with Mr Cowpat?

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 9 September 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

"I made that last bit up", obviously.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 9 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

I have been to the pub with him on many occasions

I knew that, your name was mentioned in the pub last night.

I meant that everyone else should go to the pub because it is rubbish when you go to London and organise a FAP then only three people turn up (*hem hem*)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Just checked out the 'try glagow more' thread - it looks like you had a good night!

Good point - I'll definitely be there, but it would be nice to meet a few others.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Friday, 9 September 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I might be able to make this!

I know, I always say that but...

Adam in Edgware (nordicskilla), Saturday, 10 September 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm not really that into drinking, but I will stop by and say hello.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Sunday, 11 September 2005 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, this is tomorrow now, so ::bump::

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 07:38 (twenty years ago)

maybe able to drop in early doors, but I have plans later on.

Venue?

Ed (dali), Monday, 12 September 2005 07:41 (twenty years ago)

I suggested the Lyceum simply for the poutine but we've had bad luck with that venue in the past. Can you think of somewhere better, Ed?

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

The Bloomsbury? Get there early and grab the upstairs room?

Ed (dali), Monday, 12 September 2005 07:52 (twenty years ago)

That would be fine with me! (Even though I doubt they have poutine.)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Are we decided on a change to the Bloomsbury then? If so, I'll get the mods to change the title.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 12 September 2005 09:16 (twenty years ago)

Chelsea v Anderlecht and/or Real Betis v Liverpool on tomorrow, you know. I'd like a pub with a TV, and I have no idea if the Bloomsbury qualifies - ah, just looked it up at http://www.fancyapint.com/main_site/thepubs/pub151.htm, and it has a TV and some Spanish staff, so a good bet for the Liverpool game.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh god, no offense or anything, but if there's a TV there can we pick another pub? The last thing I want is to be stuck somewhere with football blaring in the background.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

Gah! I've just asked on the moderator thread!

London, your decision making is peer with Glasgow.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

If you've asked, then never mind. I'll probably just go home as soon as the football comes on, if there's not another room.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:14 (twenty years ago)

I believe the TV is only downstairs, allowing punters to check scores when buying drinks whilst go upstairs for a pint without watching it!

Pete (Pete), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

Ah, that sounds fine then.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

kate, come and see the victorians at dublin castle!

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

It's too far! Camden is miles away, it takes me two hours to get home from and they are on quite late!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

oh yes. next time they play is 27th :(

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Bah.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

yeh, stupid. possibly it is possibly possible to do both though. but probably not if you're actually in either band.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

actually i just found out they are on at 8.15 tomorrow.

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Blimey. Dilemma.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

do both?

emsk ( emsk), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Will see how I feel tomorrow.

(Not making any decisions about anything until it gets closer to the event - I still haven't even made up my mind if I'm going to Poptimism on Friday or not yet!)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

All those dronerock #1s need your support!

I could do with a pint.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 12 September 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

(I am going through SSRI withdrawl at the moment, and on a bit of a hair trigger, so I'm trying to avoid any situations which may trigger any kind of emotional reaction until I'm confident they are out of my system. That's why I'm being so careful about making mood-based decisions right now. Anyway, sorry for the TMI.)

Smug and Pious (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

(Yes, I know, booze may not help this either, which is why I'm trying to keep up the detox right now.)

Smug and Pious (kate), Monday, 12 September 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Revive!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

I may never get out of work tonight with the way that things are piling up on my desk right now. :-(

Smug and Pious (kate), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:22 (twenty years ago)

The pub's on my walk home from work so I'll pop in for a pint

beanz (beanz), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

IT IS TIME AGAIN.

Tuesday 11th September. FAP?

aldo, Monday, 30 July 2007 09:18 (eighteen years ago)

As the Try Glasgow More people know, I often have vague work-related plans during which I try and FAP

eh? i thought you had vague drinking-related plans during which you occasionally tried to work.

grimly fiendish, Monday, 30 July 2007 09:34 (eighteen years ago)

Drinking-related plans are only vague because Glasgow couldn't organise a pissup in a city full of pubs and alcoholics.

aldo, Monday, 30 July 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)

In a city full of pubs and alkies we have no need for this "organisation" of which you speak. All you have to do is trip over a drunk and you're in a pub.

onimo, Monday, 30 July 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, but that pub ends up being MONO

aldo, Monday, 30 July 2007 10:26 (eighteen years ago)

Oh alright then.

Matt DC, Monday, 30 July 2007 10:29 (eighteen years ago)

i've not been to mono for months now. anyone fancy it?

(ducks)

grimly fiendish, Monday, 30 July 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

I may be talked into coming to this one, at least for a couple of hours.

Guilty_Boksen, Monday, 30 July 2007 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

four weeks pass...

Bump, to see if there's any interest yet.

aldo, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 13:46 (eighteen years ago)

Bump, to see where we actually are going for a pint - I can text GB but on the offchance Matt, or indeed anybody else, fancies one, any venue suggestions apprectiated.

aldo, Friday, 7 September 2007 11:00 (eighteen years ago)

I can't make it unfortunately, as I'm going to see a friend play a gig in Clapham. Unless the FAP is there :P

Colonel Poo, Friday, 7 September 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

I would be up for a drink on tues. Somewhere central? glasshouse stores if that's still in favour?

ledge, Friday, 7 September 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

never has been </ducks>

Ed, Friday, 7 September 2007 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

however, pete should bring the roulette wheel so Ic an continue bankrupting him one penny at a time.

Ed, Friday, 7 September 2007 11:51 (eighteen years ago)

Wherabouts are you staying Aldo?

Matt DC, Friday, 7 September 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'm staying in Bayswater, but the location is pretty irrelevant to me. I'm an easy drinker (as many of you can testify).

aldo, Friday, 7 September 2007 11:55 (eighteen years ago)

hi dere!

can't beat a bit of pub, eh? although there was talk of millenium celebrations, maybe we could actually EAT as well as go to the pub?

CarsmileSteve, Friday, 7 September 2007 13:15 (eighteen years ago)

I am easy for whatever London fancies (although I have just found out I have a minor post-work appointment now, so about half seven is probably the earliest I can do).

aldo, Friday, 7 September 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

Final(?) bump so some actual decisions can be made.

aldo, Monday, 10 September 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

I can possibly drop in on this.

G00blar, Monday, 10 September 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, but where?

This is try glasgow more levels of organisation, here. I am up for eating if anyone else is, I just need to know where to be.

aldo, Monday, 10 September 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

Very good point.

G00blar, Monday, 10 September 2007 11:49 (eighteen years ago)

If it's the GHS I might be able to pop along.

Mark C, Monday, 10 September 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)

Argh, work is going a bit mental this week so I could need to be clearheaded on Wednesday morning so may be rubbish and skip this. Sorry, I will try to be less crap next time you're in London.

That said, in absence of anyone actually making a decision I'm going to recommend you FAP in the Glasshouse Stores.

Carsmile is the man to contact for food related things but as I understand it is not central.

Matt DC, Monday, 10 September 2007 11:59 (eighteen years ago)

RIGHT.

Glasshouse Stores it is then. (unless Carsmile has food opinions which alter this) I will aim to be there by half past 7, but if my meeting runs on I may be slightly adrift.

aldo, Monday, 10 September 2007 12:04 (eighteen years ago)

If you like Korean food there's tons of that nearby.

suzy, Monday, 10 September 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

Tonight!

See you there - if there are any changes can Guilty Boksen please text me? Ta.

aldo, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

There's a chance I'll swing by this on my roving through London. Will you put up an ILX party banner so I can find you?

Paul Eater, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 08:27 (eighteen years ago)

Banner request seconded.

G00blar, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)

Argh there's no chance of me making this now - sorry. Hope it's a good night.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

Just had a text from aldo. As a descriptor, he will be wearing a tweed suit! I will provide an A4 banner of sorts, which will hopefully be obvious.

I've never been to the Glasshouse Stores - is there an obvious meeting place we could all head to within it?

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:40 (eighteen years ago)

Downstairs, if it's open. If not, the bar at the back of the pub (it'll be obvious what I mean). Still hoping to come along for a pint.

Mark C, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

OK - Downstairs if available, at the bar at the back if not.

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to have to duck out of this, I'm afraid - shitty migraine developed, off home to a darkened room. So no ILX Banner, but aldo will be there.

Look for this guy:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/aldo_cowpat/DSC00954.jpg

but in a tweed suit.

Guilty_Boksen, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)

What time will people be there?

Mark C, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm aiming for 8.

G00blar, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

Aw sorry goobs - I gave up at 7.15 when there was no-one else there :(

Mark C, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 20:46 (eighteen years ago)

Ken C (who, in addition to the strangeness of running into you there) appeared, as if out of the ether, later in the evening and told us your tale of woe.

I actually didn't make it there til close to 9, but I think you missed Aldo by fifteen minutes or so.

G00blar, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 23:08 (eighteen years ago)

Aww. I assumed that cos almost everyone finishes work earlier than I do, I would be late rather than early, and after Ken left it didn't seem worth waiting around indefinitely. Sorry Aldo.

Mark C, Tuesday, 11 September 2007 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

The conversation during the FAP alledgedly got very serious

ken c, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 12:54 (eighteen years ago)

You missed Aldo by 45 mins but me by only 15. Damn shame. And yes the conversation was INTENSE.

ledge, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

INTENSELY INTENSE

Sorry I was running slightly late anyway, it would have been nice to see you Mark. Not that it wasn't nice to meet the people that I did anyway. Thanks, London.

aldo, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Subjects up for scrutiny: the definition of NOIZE (I think), the enduring fantasy of innocence in American culture, the McCanns (obv), as well as both American and UK media (cf tabloid-tendencies of mainstream organs), the limits of our knowledge of the world and other people, the funniest chapters in Ulysses, Britney: awesome or awful?, the differences between philosophy and english as disciplines, the tendency of computers to be shit, the question of whether novels change anything in the world, and the metaphysical constituents of the world.

G00blar, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

And some chocolate, and a surprise, and a toy.

ledge, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

Really sorry I had to duck out - I would have had strong opinions on most of the things you talked about AND I was going to bring some mental sweets to try.

And I made a banner...

Guilty_Boksen, Thursday, 13 September 2007 08:29 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks pass...

I may be in London next weekend (12-14 Oct).

aldo, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

A week too late for Poptimism, dammit. There are usually Friday night beer plans of some description so I'm sure we can work something out. And I'll be less rubbish about coming along this time.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:56 (eighteen years ago)

I know. :-(

Plans totally uncertain for me, based around a throwaway comment about the Turner Prize exhibition currently on at Tate Modern.

aldo, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna be in Bristol (well, Keynsham) on the 13th!

If you're in London on the 12th I can probably do it.

Guilty_Boksen, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

Trains now looking stupidly priced, likely to defer till later in the year (and yes, to try and coincide with something like Poptimism hopefully).

GB- Keynsham FAP for Monkees Magic? mail me.
