Socially-Responsible Investing?

Anyone do it? Believe in it, yes or nay? I'm on the left myself, and keep coming back to the issue of which industries my investments are supporting. Some I don't favor -- nuclear power, weapons/defense manufacturers, other such things. Kind of rotten that way, in that saving money for your retirement necessitates funneling funds into these big, gambled funds. Though I realize many bonds, etc. are quite secure.

I'm wondering because I'm setting up 401(k) options here in the U.S. for the subsequent year, and specifically worried about percentage ratios -- I don't want to put all of my eggs in one basket, but definitely want a large portion of my check to go into the 'socially responsible' category. though I realize no fund is probably 'clean' in that kind of sense.

Something I might investigate if I had the time -- or the funds, you rich bastard. ;-) No, I tease -- my current savings are just sitting in a savings account, as said savings are meant to be used for a housing payment at some point (god knows when, though, my options when searching a few months ago were essentially dry and the market's gotten worse since). Smaller savings are tied into a UC retirement fund and a life insurance policy.

I originally thought this said "socially-responsible INVENTING" (which made me think of the Segway, etc.)...

I think there are companies that offer mutual funds that are comprised of "socially conscious" companies. Some do fairly well compared to other funds.

Are you implying that investing in bonds is a way to avoid supporting the weapons/defense industry?!? "Socially conscious" investing is just a transparent yuppie marketing scheme. Capitalism is what it is; your money is just going into the system either way. Actual socially conscious investing is more commonly known as philanthropy.

If you're looking to invest in the UK, Chris, I know the Co-operative Bank run ethical Unit Trusts. But I know next to nothing about performance (or the companies they invest in, to be honest).
