should i, grimly fiendish, grow a big moustache for charity this september?

i know there are other moustache threads, but ... fuck 'em.

basically, half of me wants to grow a big moustache to raise money to fight testicular and prostate cancer. the other half says not to be such a tool.

as some of you know, i already sport a big pair of pointy sideburns. the plan would be to join them up, a bit like this:

http://www.worldbeardchampionships.com/Gallery/Kalle10313072.jpg

only, er, far more refined and elegant. and pointier. and younger. and better-looking.

mrs fiendish is broadly supportive. "it's for a good cause," she says. "and you can always shave it off."

if i do it, i'll set up some kind of fundraising page with pictures. don't worry: i will not hassle people to give me cash. i just want to gauge some kind of public opinion, that's all.

where's marco salvetti when you need him?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

off topic, but are you aware that Grimly Fiendish the comic character is back? A comic called Albion, bringing back lots of old UK characters.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:46 (nineteen years ago)

of course you should. but only if it is going to be an interesting moustache like in the pic you posted.

at my uni there is a fundraising event thingo called 'movember', always good for a laugh to see what the fellas come up with in the facial hair stakes

gem (trisk), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:47 (nineteen years ago)

If you do it, I'm going to document it mercilessly, and keep those photos forever. They'll reappear with tedious frequency, and you'll never be able to hold your head up low again. Don't do it. Remember the last time?

stet (stet), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

You are sweetly insane, Grimly. But I would urge you to think again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:50 (nineteen years ago)

are you aware that Grimly Fiendish the comic character is back? A comic called Albion, bringing back lots of old UK characters.

no! do you have a weblink, martin?

Remember the last time?

dude, you have enough embarrassing pictures of me to mount a poorly attended exhibition at one of those galleries on king street. i shall document it mercilessly myself, anyway.

the cons so far outweigh the pros, i think.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

I don't. 2 issues out so far, conceived but not written by Alan Moore, not bad.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

Girls will think you're super-sexy.*

*This may be a lie, in order for the pros to get back on level terms.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 29 August 2005 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

aldo: in a week and a half (or whatever), you might well be sitting in a pub staring at this thing in its nascent form. are you sure you want that?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Oh yes, I'm sure.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, definitely yes. You will look amusing great, you will be raising money for a good cause, and we can all LAUGH AT YOU!

This bloke on the right of this photo here at last year's thingie looks a bit like Ally C. He also has a rubbish moustache, which I am sure you could beat quite easily.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

if you're going to do it, then make sure you do it properly and don't end up with some terrible bum-fluff effort - my big question is, *can* you grow a decent 'tache in the first place? otherwise, you may indeed yet look like a tool...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:39 (nineteen years ago)

I can't even believe you're hesitating! START GROWING IT YESTERDAY.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

i've been growing ill-advised facial hair since 1993. it's one of my few talents.

and dan: yesterday was the last time i shaved, so ... heh.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:47 (nineteen years ago)

Do. It.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 29 August 2005 12:48 (nineteen years ago)

Needless to say, I will sponsor you. I like the idea of stet's scret photo diary, if he can get his camera to work this time.

brg30 (brg30), Monday, 29 August 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sorry, Grimly, but people will come up to you and say "hey, you're growing a moustache" and you'll say "it's for charity" and you'll sound like the lamest lying tool in the history of history.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

that is a very, very good point. any suggestions for moustache excuses gratefully received ... actually, no, i don't think i can bear to read them.

i'm 70% certain i'm gonna do this.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

Solution: instead of saying "it's for charity," he can say "no shit."

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Your wife says she'd get even more pleasure if I had a moustache."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:05 (nineteen years ago)

Admit it, you're only growing it so you can look like The Johnson.

, Monday, 29 August 2005 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

I moustache you a question

RJG (RJG), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

stet made me do it.

in fact, I'm going to tell everyone in the next few days that I've forced you to do it with hypnotic mind control, so they all think I have freaky powers.

stet (stet), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

I think Grimly would look great with a moustache. Use ugly footballers of yesteryear as your inspiration.

john wark! that's the look i'll go for. heh :)

x-post: FUCK I FORGOT ABOUT AZNAR. stet is right: i will.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

(only with big sideburns an' that too.)

Grimly I think you need to emulate one of these

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

Get Stewbeardmag to document it! I want evidence of this beard by next Thursday, by the way. Or is it just to be a moustache, with no beard?

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

"What is this we hear about moustaches being uncool?!"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 29 August 2005 14:51 (nineteen years ago)

just a moustache, no beard. and IF I DO IT, which is now about 80% certain, there'll be sketchy evidence next thursday. but fear not, there'll be regular pic updates. somewhere. this thread, probably.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

What you really need to do is also shave your head except for sideburns and mustache.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 August 2005 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

That's crept up from 70% to 80% certainty in an hour. You cannot back out now.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 29 August 2005 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

Check out the moustache category pics here grimly

Lets see which one suits you best.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

x-post:

grimly's moustache optimism can go down as well as up. past sideburns, goatee beards and shaved heads are not a guide to future performance. the value of an investment in grimly's plans can fall as well as rise and you might get back less amusement than you originally invested. you should take appropriate professional advice before sitting opposite grimly in a pub, especially if he is eating crisps.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

christ. that was meant to wrap. bloody html tags/my lack of html knowledge. ach, it wasn't funny anyway.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

I vote for "The Imperial" since you're half way there already. (just turn your sidies inside out, or something).

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:13 (nineteen years ago)

this one ("partial beard" my arse, it's a moustache):

http://www.worldbeardchampionships.com/Categories/sideburns.JPG

with the potential to become - yes! - the imperial at a later date.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

(i actually found that pic on google images earlier, but decided to go with the old man instead.

even though my mum warned me about such things.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

Frankly grimly, I have seen you with more dodgy facial hair than anyone else I can remember (except for Tom's Beard (TM) which regular readers will know all about -- and in fact can it be that I know both of the worst facial hair offenders on ILX? And given I couldn't persuade Tom to shave before his wedding (spectacular failure in the best man stakes) I'm hardly an authority on this) so who is going to notice a moustache? So either you don't do it or you do it and make sure it is the most stupid looking thing ever.

Of course growing a moustache ironically is as bad as likeing music ironically (not that anyone does this ever, see ILM threads passim) but I guess charity is an decent excuse.

alext (alext), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

woah, who mentioned irony? not i. i've fancied trying a moustache (more) for a while. this is simply a GOOD EXCUSE.

actually, i had a moustache when i was 15. it was fucking terrible. (photographic evidence does exist.) and when i got rid of the goatee, i pared it down to a moustache for one night only and went to the pub with it. t0m g0rdon spent an hour staring at me, then said: "have you had a haircut or something?" the big lovable mook.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

Instead...

Why not wear all black and only listen to 80s electronic music?

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:57 (nineteen years ago)

15-year-old mustache.... damn...

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

forward not back, keith. forward not back.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

To a massive moustache!

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:19 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I enjoyed this. Let's have it again:

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:20 (nineteen years ago)

brian kilcline. on tv. now. amazing

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 29 August 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

the preliminary sketches are in. obviously, i'd be aiming for length and depth too.

nb: after i'd scribbled all over my face in berol semi-permanent marker, i realised i should have done it in photoshop. but hey.

you'll notice how, in the second picture, having a moustache has put a smile on my face. or maybe that's just because mrs fiendish's hysterical laughter was catching. i'm still not sure if she was laughing at the moustache, or the fact it was in berol semi-permanent marker.

neither's she.

anyway.

ailsa (ailsa), Monday, 29 August 2005 20:14 (nineteen years ago)

on reloading this thread, madchen says "ahahahahahahahAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH".

um, so do I. Mate, don't do it. Please. I need time to mock you for all the other stuff, and that would take up all available slots.

stet (stet), Monday, 29 August 2005 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

i just told richard about it and we both laughed till we cried
has the marker washed off yet?

dahlin (dahlin), Monday, 29 August 2005 22:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hell yeah, do it! I'll gladly sponsor you. And I can interview for Beard about your moustache journey. :)

Stew (stew s), Monday, 29 August 2005 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

I just grew a handlebar moustache.
They're great!
Minty flavor!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 01:46 (nineteen years ago)

I told the mister about this last night and he's quickly revised his opinion that you are the least mental of the interweb mentalists that I have introduced him to.

Have you gone into work with semi-permanent marker on your face today?

The other day, I got some paint on my trousers on my way into work and cleverly decided to colour over the offending painty bits with a black marker pen so no-one would notice. This was a really successful idea until I got home, took my trousers off and realised my leg was all covered in black permanent marker blotches (it took about three hours of scrubbing with a loofah to get them off). I am therefore imagining you will have the most exfoliated upper lip area in West Central Scotland today.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 30 August 2005 06:10 (nineteen years ago)

progress report, please

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 1 September 2005 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

sorry: hurricanes threw my moustache efforts into sharp relief.

however, i'm definitely doing this. you can follow my progress at this rudimentary website.

i am absolutely not on the hunt for donations here, okay? seriously: i've already beaten my expected total of ten quid. if anyone does want to contribute, be warned that once you click "donate", you've donated: if i get all razor-happy, you don't get your cash back. (i won't, though. i'll see this through till the end of september. and MAYBE BEYOND. heh.)

er, that's it. all future picture updates will be posted on the site linked above.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:00 (nineteen years ago)

I like the sponsors you have so far.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Big charity moustaches filter out 97% of the impurities in the food you eat.

Aimless (Aimless), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

oh yeh, knew i had something else to add. obviously, i'm going to grow a rudimentary beard first, then shave it down once it's at an acceptable length.

i mean, i don't want to look stupid, do i?

anyway: it might be a week or two before i look like anything other than a scruffier version of my usual self.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

scruffy and hairy

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 5 September 2005 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

I think at the end you should shave it off and weigh it, like Banksy in Grange Hill.

so awesome. the only thing more awesome than that muoustache is you wearing nabisco's neighborhoodie with that moustache.

carly (carly), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm. There is a link on the bottom of the website which suggests "If you find anything on this page offensive, please report it to us in confidence by clicking here". It's tempting, given the photograph...

(only joking, donation to come once I get paid)

ginger beards pwn, leave off.
