This is a newm twee side to Jimmy The Mod that I wasn't previously aware of!

These are all very cool, I like the red panda (and the caption!)

(that "m" should be a ",")

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I really like them!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:22 (twenty years ago)

These are absolutely lovely. Recklessly precise line.
I see your scanner is doing that grayscale thang. My old scanner, an Apple, would scan line drawings on a "line art" setting and the scans were indistinguishable from the originals. My new scanner, an Epson, when using the "black and white" setting, fudges the line. It looks like someone got the drawing wet. And on the gray scale and color settings it reads the paper as gray. Pisses me off. High contrast setting helps but it still isn't as good as my old scanner, which only works with my old computer (scuzzy port), which is dying a slow death. So what is your scanner?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

Thank you all for biting on my compliment fishing!

BP:

Scanner is part of a cheapo Epson (CX4600) Scanner/printer/copier that I got because I needed a new printer and the price was WAY right and said to myself, 'might as well get the scanner too, because even if it shits out in a year, the price was so cheap it doesn't matter...'

So I scanned those at full color, because that's what I do to my negatives when I scan those, and it just seems the most faithful option. THe B/W option always loses my greys that come from touch, which you can see on the orig. and it clumps up the smudging (from touch) as you can see in the fish, and accidentally in the mouse deer.

Beth, the interface for your new scanner doesn't have a B&W/Line Art setting at all? That's a new one on me.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

By the way, those are really nice drawerings.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

It has a B&W setting, but as I said, it fudges the line. You get a truer line on the grayscale setting, but then you lose the white of the paper, even if you weigh it down with a ton of books so there's no lifting at all. Photoshopping a white fill doesn't work, it etches into the line. As for erasing, forget about it. That's something they should make prisoners do if they're sick of making license plates.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

have you tried doubling up the paper?

The Original Jimmy Mod: Waiting for the return of the Lohan's titties (The Famo, Thursday, 1 September 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Um, well, that's what Levels was made for. (xpost)
Before and after:

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

bye bye blue

The Original Jimmy Mod: Waiting for the return of the Lohan's titties (The Famo, Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, yeah. Levels, curves. That's where I make the high contrast adjustment.
I put a sheet of card stock over the drawings, then books. I'm zeroing in on it, but I'm resenting it all the way. I never used to have to do all this crap.
You need to use the grayscale setting for your drawings, you're right. A b&w setting would break your lovely smudges into dots.
I also use the scanner to do 3d scans, which it's good at. It's an Epson Perfection 3170 and came with software that didn't work with my Mac G5. I have to import into Photoshop.
But it was cheap. At least there's that.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Life drawing at the zoo must be fun. Out of neccessity I do most of mine on the bus.

Nice work, btw. And Rock Hardy is of course completely correct about levels in photoshop.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

I guess I should read the book. There's only so much you can learn flailing around.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

You did lose some line in the cleaned-up duckling, though. Under his chinny chin chin.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:38 (twenty years ago)

Those skulls are great!

walter kranz (walterkranz), Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Haha yes I thought I mightve posted this thread in my sleep or something =) (I got a new scanner y'day)

Nice drawings :) Must get back into some art mself.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 1 September 2005 01:41 (twenty years ago)

Life drawing at the zoo must be fun.

The drawing is fun. the people who stare over your shoulder (none of them attractive women) and say 'ooooo he's draw'in him!' and scream and tell their children the wrong names of the animals are not.

When my mother was younger she used to do watercolors at the beach. Whenever someone looked over her shoulder she would immediately scoop sand over the watercolor, which would make the person think she was crazy and would also give the paint surface a nice pebbled texture.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 September 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm not about to scoop Red Panda poo onto my drawrings!

joek.

The Original Jimmy Mod: Waiting for the return of the Lohan's titties (The Famo, Thursday, 1 September 2005 03:49 (twenty years ago)

really cool, jimmy.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 1 September 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

Thanks everyone. I know I do the jerk thing here a lot but your compliments are very nice.

The Original Jimmy Mod: Waiting for the return of the Lohan's titties (The Famo, Thursday, 1 September 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

It's been a pleasure seeing that fish pop into view every time I open the thread. Keep up the good work, and throw the poo at your unwanted audience. Learn from your cousins the chimps. That'll keep them at arm's length.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy I like how lively they are!
