Money not goods though.

Bret Favre was on Fox yesterday, pleading for generators and fuel so that people can... turn on the fridge and have a hot shower. Don't know they're born, etc etc...

For the first million, they'll match .5 to the dollar.

Okay, I didn't know how to donate to MercyCorps, it seemed as though I *had* to donate on a monthly basis as well.Does that RRMTF.ORG thing work?

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

I think money is usually better than goods, because random clothes and blankets and stuff are much more logistically difficult to deal with.

Hurting (Hurting), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure eventually you'll start to see canned food drives and such though.

To go along with what Hurting said, Why relief agencies ask for money instead of goods. (Red Cross site seems to be a bit slow the past few days)

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

Today's payday, so I'm going to donate. Any advice on the most effective way to do this would be welcome (Red Cross? SBC?).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if this is presumptious, since I sadly never met her, but I was thinking about making my donation in memory of Liz, since the Red Cross allows you this option. Was anyone else thinking about this?

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:19 (nineteen years ago)

Is anyone able to access the Red Cross site this morning?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 1 September 2005 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Jordan, I wasn't able to access it yesterday evening, either, but the I could access the RC donations page that Ned linked in the Katrina thread yesterday (or the day before) to make a donation.

http://www.americares.org - it's not the red cross but according to this site and its webpage, it looks like a good charity

Maria (Maria), Thursday, 1 September 2005 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks M. I was just about to use that page, but I noticed that my credit union has a page setup for direction donation to the Red Cross, that's pretty cool.

You can donate to the red cross through your Amazon account:

I have been thinking about donating to Noah's Wish, which rescues animals from disaster zones. I hadn't heard of them before yesterday. I don't have a lot of $ to give, and would like what I do give to have the maximum effectiveness. Does anyone else know anything about them?

i recommend attempting human empathy instead of projecting emotions onto dumb animals

ff, Thursday, 1 September 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

I got onto the Red Cross site, but now when I hit donate I get a message about an unknown certificate, which was not there this morning-Can anyone with more computer skills than I look at this and see if it's been hacked?

ff-
I don't know if that's supposed to be a dig, a joke or what but fuck it and you regardless.

I never claimed to be without human empathy or that I (or anyone else) am pretending that animals have "human emotions". However, I have a human response to innocent animals drowning, dying, and suffering in general. There are lots and lots of people donating $ to humans who undoubtedly need help. But their animal friends could certainly use help as well--and if someone is willing to help them then I am inclined to support that.

My question was about a matter of efficacy. So why don't you tell me what your plan is to help instead of being a dick about it.
