I'd like to buy a camera, but I don't know anything about them.

I think I want a digital camera, but one that has some flexibility, i.e. a manual focus function or something. Does that exist? Does anyone have any suggestions, recommendations, etc? Can I get something good for under $300 or so? Thanks.

No, you REALLY want a digital camera.

Rebel; D70S

Does that exist?

See above.

No.

You can get something very good for under $300, but not something really good with a manual focus.

www.dpreview.com is a good website.

Hmm... I don't really want to spend much more than three or four hunded. Maybe I should forget about the manual focus?

What do you want to use the camera for?

Taking pictures of friends, etc. I'd like the ability to zoom on shit as I've never been able to take good touristy shots with a non zoomer. Probably good flash nighttime performance.

I'd also like to be able to carry this in a jacket pocket. I have a smart media reader, so that media type might be helpful, but I assume most have a usb port anyway.

You probably really want a point and shoot then, a dSLR is for messing with lenses and doing those posh photos where the background is all out of focus.

With $300, I would buy this one without hesitation:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00064O89Y/qid=1125606141/br=1-10/ref=br_lf_p_10//103-3826486-9134237?v=glance&s=photo&n=493710

Use any remaining money to buy a bigger memory card (the one that comes with the camera is small).

Here's a good review:

A Canon S410 might take very (very) slightly better pictures, but it's a little bigger (and still a bit more expensive).
