Is the comb-over becoming fashionable?

Lately I've noticed a few balding men in their late 20s or 30s who are dressed in a hipsterish way and yet also sporting a comb-over. What is happening here? Is this an "ironic comb-over", close relative of the "ironic mullet"? Has the cue-ball look for hip yet balding young men now been superseded? Actually, I'd say the cue-ball look has been on decline for some time now, replaced by the short-hair "wearing a crown" look, and now possibly by "ironic comb-over." Whither hair fashion for hip men who are a little thin on top? Will we be seeing hipsters wearing rugs a few years down the line?

i don't see why it couldn't or shouldn't. i think it's a bit sad that men chop it all off at the first sign of balding. people act like it's the only way you can go but the cue-ball look is "just" fashion after all. no one did it 15 years ago.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 2 September 2005 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

That's because it's only been in the last fifteen years that a generation which grew up disgusted at the sight of a combover has realized "OMG, I'm balding now -- but I'll be damned if I look like THOSE assholes."

I comb over the pubes so it looks like Jimmy Durante.

Yes, I think the comb-over is back. It has always been seen as laughable because it's so transparent, such a pathetically feeble way of hiding baldness. But actually I don't see why the cue-ball is any different, since it also is trying to hide the male-pattern look by chopping it all off. The difference with the new, hip comb-overs like the guy from Maximo Park, is that there is no pretence that they're really hiding anything, it's just another hairstyle.

true, Ned, but why did that only happen in the last 15 years? men have been coming-over for generations before then. i suppose i might be slightly appalled if the comb-over came back in a big way but at the moment i think it's good to see a few comb-overers challenging the cue ball hegemony.

xps

My Japanese friend called'em barcode men. It's great fun when the wind blows it to the other side. Especially when it's in *one piece*.

I've seen quite a few comb-overs in gay bars and clubs. Which means the trend will break through to the hetero world in about 18 months' time.

I believe the Norwegian word for a combover is "hentesveis," (hente="collect"+sveis="hairstyle"), not to be confused with "hockeysveis"- hockey hair.

Why the comb-o anyhow, and not perhaps the more radical brushed-forward mullet?

A friend was telling me about a new vaginal fashion popular in S&M circles called the comb-over; girls grow their pubic hair long enough so that they can reach it into their vagina, so it looks like the hair is being eating by their vadge. Once it's been in there a while you can take it out and re-style it with the juices into spikes and shit.
