Taking Sides - Breakaway vs. Trio vs. Club vs. Gold Bars

For me, Mint Clubs are the most enjoyable, though the Fruit ones in the purple wrappers are nasty. However, i dont remember seeing Club biscuits for a long time (do they still exist). Toffee trios were alright too, but i think Breakaways were a bit boring.

I would like to say Gold Bars are the best, but since a bottle of Lenor exploded all over the packet whilst unloading the shopping, and i was still stupid enough to try one, means the flavour has been tainted forever.

Most offputting branding award: Blue Riband. I don't want my chocosnackobiscuitbars (what are these things called?) to be associated with blue. It's all wrong.

What flavour were/are Club Golf bars? Golf-flavoured? Oh hang on - I think dark chocolate. Very golfy.

In other news, Penguins are still rank.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:17 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, I quite like Penguins :(

Blue Riband = bad advert (big-woolly-jumpered bloke sings badly, world turns off)

Trio = good advert (small girl with big lungs deafens the universe, thousands of small children run around playgrounds screaming "I want a trio and I want one now!").

Therefore Trio >>> Blue Riband (notwithstanding the fact that Blue Ribands were manky).

I can't remember details of adverts for Breakaways and Clubs except slogans ("Don't take away my Breakaway". "If you like a lot of chocolate on your biscuit, join our club").

*applies for Kate Thornton's position as Ninja of the Obvious on "I Love 80s Biscuits"*

I know nothing about Gold Bars, I don't think, unless they were those honeycomb kind of things, in which case they win because they were great.

Yeah, I don't think I know anything about Gold Bars either. I think their inclusion was a trick.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:27 (nineteen years ago)

I think I've never forgiven Penguins for all being the same flavour despite many variations of packet colour.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'm sure I had an orange Penguin not that long ago. Mind you, I also had an Orange Crunchie not that long ago, orange seems to be the de riguer "make a limited edition version of your poxy product that no-one buys any more" option.

I like Penguins because they are CHEAP. As am I.

In other news, I had a Texan bar last week for the first time in about 25 years. It was OK.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot all about Penguins, thought their inclusion in the James Pond games always struck me as odd. Just for good measure, through in Kit Kats and Tunnocks Caramel bars. I dont know how i wasnt a massively fat child.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Saturday, 3 September 2005 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

Tunnocks Caramel Bars >>>>>>>>>>> Tunnocks Tea Cakes. Kit Kats are OK. They do orange ones of them too.

Want someone to take a potshot at Taxis as well? They were just Blue Ribands in a different pack, weren't they?

GOLDBARS!!!!!! Man, I swear those things must have accounted for about 20% of my weight when I was 11.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 3 September 2005 14:59 (nineteen years ago)

I bought a pack of Gold Bars off a market last year and they were MING. Clubs were never quite as nice-tasting as they promised, either.

I have a feeling the 54321 beats all, but I can't actually remember what they tasted like.

spontine (cis), Saturday, 3 September 2005 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

First bite into milky (?) chocolate (5-4-3-2-1)
Then do something else (5-4-3-2-1)
etc.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 September 2005 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

"real milk chocolate"

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 3 September 2005 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

For Alba (and anyone else, I guess), clips of old adverts including 54321.

I loved Gold bars when they first appeared - only in the late 80s, I think - but trying them recently, they just seem far too sickly-sweet now.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 4 September 2005 07:33 (nineteen years ago)

Are Gold Bars chocolate, or something more sinister?

dmun drive-in (dmun), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

They have a caramel-flavoured coating, a bit like Caramac.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:08 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, Gold Bars! They'd completely left my radar. I was always a big Breakaway fan, so they win this one.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Breakaway > Taxi > Blue Riband (scottish) >>>> Club > Trio >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>(infinity)> Gold Bars

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

Trios were better when they were originally released - they changed the design in the 90s some time.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Sunday, 4 September 2005 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

My brother reminded me of those trio wrappers where you had to rub the packet and a picture would show up underneath. Wow!!

dmun drive-in (dmun), Sunday, 4 September 2005 21:24 (nineteen years ago)

Jaysus, Gold Bars were so fucking horrible, I'd blotted them out of my memory. I agree wholeheartedly that Breakaways were the best... Club were nice but almost had TOO MUCH chocolate on them. Always a bad thing when it's been sitting in your school bag for several hours.

I don't remember Blue Riband at all. We have Penguins in our house at the moment. They're still nice.
