is there any reason i shouldn't take this deal? will it fill all my computing needs? any problems with certified refurbished deals?

Rather than a refurb, though, I'd say buy through the Apple Education store (they only check eligibility randomly) - the 17" 1.8GHz G5 is only $1199, and you've got the latest revision and no refurb worries.

I highly recommend getting 2GB of RAM from a third party (crucial.com or macsales.com) and swapping it out for the 512 - it's definitely worth $200 and you'll never run into problems with having a large iTunes library or memory-heavy programs open.

maybe i should just go with the initial ram setup and see?
i've been using this powerbook g3 with 64M for yrs. now with no trouble. i know memory footprints increase with higher versions but... if i'm not doing graphix work, i should be ok i think?

You can, after all, max out your motherboard.

more than a year later, i've never bothered. it works absolutely fine for my needs (writing/webbing/listening).

am thinking of getting a refurbished macbook with my new-found wealths (ha ha, as if). i get frustrated on work trips not being able to keep working and i can only get full access to the server with a mac. plus they are nice.
despite having had it explained to me dozens of times i am still clueless when it comes to specs. does this look good (down to £529 from £750, the most i can afford is prob about £550)?
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?nplm=FA254
bad idea to get it on ebay for £25 less? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-White-Apple-Macbook-1-83GHz-Core-2-Duo-Processor_W0QQitemZ260140657139QQihZ016QQcategoryZ141177QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
i will be using it mostly for work, inevitably for music/film too but to play rather than to store these on, i have been gifted a dell laptop that needs its backlight fixing and everything reinstalling that i'll use for downloading, storing etc

I'm using that model just now, except filled up with 2gb ram. You'll need to get at least 1gb, as 512mb isn't nearly enough, but otherwise I'd say go for it. If the eBay saving is only £25, forget it -- the refurbs come with a warranty.

the Core Duos are good laptops. I would definitely get it directly from Apple - there's a one-year warranty included (immediate replacement if DOA within two weeks, etc.) and I think Britishes have an even better warranty than that, actually.
Upgrade the RAM as soon as you can. 512MB is way too little and upgrading to 2GB shouldn't cost much more than $100USD

hurrah thank you! what do i need to do to upgrade the ram, just take it to the apple shop?
― emsk, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)
Glad to see this thread - I'm also thinking about a refurbished iMac - I want it for music recording purposes, so I'm wondering what are the minimum specs I should go for.

don't buy the ram from apple, they are ridiculously expensive. get it online & install yourself, its really easy! eg. in the uk http://www.orcalogic.co.uk/asp/prodtype.asp?prodtype=27622&ft=m&st=3

there are places that specifically deal with mac upgrades/repairs, in New York there's a place called TechServe that does all that stuff. i'm sure u can do it at the store too but for reason i have more faith going to another retailer. just google some stuff/call some places it's a very common thing to do.
i think u should be fine recording music with the same specs as above given the upgraded RAM. 1.83Ghz though like the standard now, is way fast.
i record on one of those new BlackBooks and it's fucking amazing
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 13:14 (eighteen years ago)
thank you! i am EXCITED!
― emsk, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 13:23 (eighteen years ago)
So basically a refurbed G5 with upgraded RAM sounds like the way to go?
― Hurting 2, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 13:27 (eighteen years ago)
WAHT
it just disappeared! :(
― emsk, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)
the ebay one comes w one year warranty
terrible idea?
― emsk, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)
I would trust Apple much more than a re-seller's warranty.
Hurting, I'd look for a Core Duo or Core 2 rather than a G5. You might want to install Parallels and run Windows or Linux on it at some point, and the G5 doesn't really offer any advantages over an Intel Mac.
― milo z, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)
i need to get Parallels
i dunno emsk, all 'm saying is if it's not THAT much more, better airing on the safe side? i'm ultra paranoid about stuff like this, so that's just me.
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 18:08 (eighteen years ago)
yeah i was all set to get the one from apple but then it disappeared and the next one up is like £1000.
am gonna get friends to pick me one up in the states :)
― emsk, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)
