Websites which don't work: BBC, Guardian, US Open, Stylus
This started last night and may or may not be something to do with the fact that my Norton Anti Virus thing died a few weeks ago, though everything's worked fine since (bar error messages when I turn my computer on which I just click through) so I've been ignoring that. I ran Ad-Aware and am pretty sure there isn't a nasty virus in the computer. But it would probably be a good idea to get that working again.
Help!

You are the reason computer support people cry themselves to sleep at night.

I am not the worst technological person I know! My dad is confused by computer keyboards, and I know someone who doesn't know how to turn her mobile phone off.

start -> run -> cmd
Shen type in tracert 212.187.153.30 and press enter, copy and paste the results from that in here.

In the Run box, it says it can't find the file 'cmd' or one of its components :(
How old a computer is this? Type "command.exe" instead.

It doesn't recognise 'command.exe' either.
It *is* a Windows computer, right?
Try 'command.com'

Nope. Nothing.
You can try to whine at them if you like, but they're not very likely to listen. The only thing you can do is wait a few hours for them to fix it.

i.e. you can't get to sharapova's sweet ass directly because BT is cockblocking you.
but instead you can use proxify (because presumably they don't use BT) who basically connects to sharapova's bum on your behalf, and then tells you how sweet and round it was after its done.

in this instance, having a mac would make things worse. at least BT are vaguely aware of the concept of a windows PC and can theoretically support it. if the lex had a mac, they'd blame everything on that and tell him how they don't actually offer mac support.
still. doesn't stop me using them as an ISP. i like to live on the edge.

we need help!
we're with at&t, our wireless has been problem free for over a year... then the modem just suddenly turned itself off one day and wouldn't turn back on. so we bought a new one, a stupid netgear one, which has been causing us endless problems. at least once a day it needs to be reset, sometimes 3 or 4 times a day. this was annoying but we were putting up with it.
today it pretty much won't work at all. it flickers on and off. trying to get tech support is basically like trying to get blood from a stone.
anyone got any ideas? anything we can do ourselves to make it 'work'? what other, more reliable, wireless options should we be looking at?
― DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Saturday, 7 November 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)
I have AT&T too in SF and I have had the same problem in the past. I thought it was the modem, but it was actually the dsl line resetting and dropping and not the modem, it would always work itself out after a few days. I am actually using a maybe 9 yr old modem now with a separate new wireless router and that works well. Are you torrenting on the computer? If you are try lowering the number of connections allowed in the program's prefs. hen I have had problems with AT&T before I got better help from http://www.dslreports.com/forum/ilec,pcb than I did from the isp itself.
― svend, Saturday, 7 November 2009 04:11 (sixteen years ago)
thanks svend - yeah, when we first had problems we rang att&t who said it was netgear's problem, so we rang netgear who then said it was at&t. hours later we got it working, albeit with the daily resetting. my husband is on the ph with at&t now, not sure how much they'll be able to actually help us.
― DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Saturday, 7 November 2009 04:16 (sixteen years ago)
Is it an adsl connection? It could be the modem, but if it is actually losing sync it could be the ISP or it could even be the phone line in yr house.
― i obtain much semillon (Trayce), Saturday, 7 November 2009 08:41 (sixteen years ago)
If its cable, Im shit out of ideas.
FOUR YEARS and there's still no Sharapovasbum.com :-(((
When my wireless router's disconnection problems went away when I told it to use a specific channel instead of the "choose one automatically" setting - randomly tried a couple until I found one that had the best signal strength and that was it (i.e. the page on your router's setup configuration page where you can pick Channel 01 : 2.412 GHz , Channel 02 : 2.417 GHz , etc)
― StanM, Saturday, 7 November 2009 10:20 (sixteen years ago)
Er... "My wireless router's disconnection problems went away when I told it to..." - that first "When" is from a beta version of the sentence.
― StanM, Saturday, 7 November 2009 10:22 (sixteen years ago)
Ah, if Jus is talking purely about her own wireless signal (ie the wifi) then AT&T cant do anything, cos it'll be the wireless router.
― i obtain much semillon (Trayce), Saturday, 7 November 2009 10:45 (sixteen years ago)
nah it's not the wireless router, it's the modem.
we've had this wireless router for over a year and literally had zero problems with it. the AT&T modem just died recently and we replaced it with a netgear-brand modem which has been nothing but problematic. gonna try to find an AT&T modem today and see if that fixes the issue. (since we bought this piece of shit, jordan has spent roughly 9 hours on the ph with tech support, in total)
― DAN P3RRY MAD AT GRANDMA (just1n3), Saturday, 7 November 2009 18:41 (sixteen years ago)
ah ok, sorry for the false hope there :-(
― StanM, Saturday, 7 November 2009 18:46 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah occams razor would suggest its the modem - swap another in, if it works, thats yr issue. Netgear and Dlink are both pretty crummy. (tho I have a dlink and it behaves kind of ok)
