There's been a definite shift since the eighties towards plain bondage being more acceptable - cf. every issue of Cosmo EVAH as tip number fifteen invariably involves some kind of silk scarf shenanigans. At the same time BDSM, which is seen as more painful/sordid/just silly, isn't going to make the leap any time soon.
