Paddington

Looking at the newspaper, I note they're trying to reinvent Paddington Bear for a new youth market. He now wears Nike hats and denim jackets instead of his customary blue duffle. What would Mr. Brown say? This can't be right, sure

Will, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ly? I'm sorry to get all Stuart (puttup!!) MacConie on you all, but I was especially keen on Paddington. New answers...

Will, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

As long as he does not have harrods embroidered on him I dont care. Whats with the posting frenzy Will, has work been leaving you unfulfilled?

Menelaus Darcy, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This was in Metro a couple of days ago. The fact that the new bear is called Raddington (d'you see?) makes it all OK.

Emma, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this is a sacrilege .

anthony, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Will he have pop-tarts underneath his baseball cap?

Jonnie, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked the animated Paddington where Paddington was a 3D bear and everything else was just illustration.

This reinvention sounds like a bad idea.

rosemary, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's just sick.

It's like when Winnie the Pooh was defiled by making him so Disney- fied.

Nicole, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why do people feel they need to cater for some kind of reinvention when people love Paddington Bear for what he is? It's the same for a lot of things, the only one I can think of unfortunately being the time they changed the Eastenders theme tune and had to change it back because no one liked it. and BBC sport sticking drumbeats on all their themes. ridiculous!

Sad that this is the only Paddington Bear thread. And so short!

I loved this actually, and didn't expect to at all.

Yeah, I took my kid to this yesterday at the second-run theater. "Loved" might be overstating it, but it had some very nice visual touches.

And Nicole Kidman looking surprisingly like Nataly from Pomplamoose:

Ok, loved is possibly too strong but ykwim. The wall in Nicole Kidman's secret lab cracked me up.

Aw, RIP. Loved the Paddington books v much as a kid... and the jigsaw puzzles, and the ZX Spectrum games, and the Olga da Polga book I had, though nobody else I've mentioned it to seems to remember that series.

a passing spacecadet, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 14:05 (eight years ago)

The 70s animations were great. The recent film was pretty decent too.
Can't remember reading the books, though would be surprised if I never have.
Sorry to hear he's gone but 91 is a ripe old age.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 15:32 (eight years ago)

i loved the books so much

rip

rip. paddington's interactions with the material world and generally unfamiliar were and are immensely reassuring.

RIP. As a kid I read the books and watched the TV series.

Paddington 2 is wonderful down to the smallest detail. Even the "2" is introduced in a sweet, not-tacky way, on the title screen. I'd say I liked it more than the first one, but maybe I was just riding a Paddington high and ready for more.

geoffreyess, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 01:45 (eight years ago)

really enjoyed it myself. very very sweet.

she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 02:37 (eight years ago)

watched it solely because I saw it was the only 4th movie ever to get 100% on RT after more than 100 reviews, had no idea what it was about (and not familiar with the books). easy to see why it would earn that honor, it's lovingly crafted and a crowd-pleaser. I should go back and watch the first one, it sounds like

Vinnie, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 08:06 (eight years ago)

Took a couple of kids from work to see it and laughed so hard at one scene I thought I wasn't going to stop. Stays true to the spirit of the original, too. Everybody in this is perfect.

the girl with the rub-on tattoo (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 08:29 (eight years ago)

Watched both of them over Christmas, including the first one twice. It really is the most perfect hangover film at that time of year.

There are a couple of jokes in them that are extremely near-the-knuckle for a children's film but none of the kids would actually notice. FWIW I'm not sure there's ever been an animated character with as much pathos as this Paddington. On the verge of tears several times.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 10:22 (eight years ago)

So is that reboot at the start of this thread a Mandela Effect thing or what?

Daniel_Rf, Wednesday, 24 January 2018 10:57 (eight years ago)

Have tickets to take Nora to a screening of this soon; she's very into the books at the moment, and we must have watched the first film on blu-ray half a dozen times over Xmas.

Hey Bob (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 12:39 (eight years ago)

Hugh Grant is wonderful as Hugh Grant. I liked the Chaplin/Lloyd/Keaton homages. I have a feeling I missed more allusions than I caught, but this movie was chock full of film history.

rb (soda), Wednesday, 24 January 2018 20:55 (eight years ago)

What a charmingly simple, innocent, calming, ridiculous movie this was. A couple of hilariously subtle jokes. My fave was when the inmates introduced themselves and one of them more or less was revealed as a politician, which earned another really subtle "no comment" callback a few beats later. Not sure I got the joke beyond the maybe obvious, but I love how Knuckles had "Knuckle's" (with the erroneous apostrophe) tattooed on his knuckles.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 26 January 2018 22:39 (eight years ago)

I just watched the first movie tonight
Trailer had turned me off bcz he looked a bit creepy but gosh what a delight
Ben Whishaw doing the voice was such brilliant casting, so unassuming & perfectly Paddington.
Top marks, perfect comfort movie

Before I left to move to the States one of the last gifts my best friend gave me was my very own “Paddington” duffle coat. My plan was to wear it at the airport when Mr Veg came to greet me but it was too hot :( Never did find a good red hat to go with it.

Gah! So lovely! Bawled so much at the ending. Lovely lovely lovely

Just as wonderful the second time. Lovely film.

rewatched first movie today, like a cozy blanket of <3

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 29 April 2018 03:58 (seven years ago)

Went back to watch the first one as mentioned upthread. Just as good, maybe better than the sequel. Would happily watch a third one of these

1>2

Jeff, Sunday, 29 April 2018 15:12 (seven years ago)

Yeah, the only reason it wasn't a clear call is because #1 didn't have a sequence as dazzling as the popup book in #2

Vinnie, Sunday, 29 April 2018 15:48 (seven years ago)

The very ending of #2 is also absolutely classic. But yeah, #1 is getting a bit underestimated after #2 got all 'best reviewed movie ever' hype.

Frederik B, Sunday, 29 April 2018 16:06 (seven years ago)

It's all about the way it connects to that opening flashback, but it's absolutely over the top how big of an emotional payoff you can deliver with a closeup on the face of a cgi bear.

Frederik B, Sunday, 29 April 2018 16:12 (seven years ago)

i want to see 2 again

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 29 April 2018 16:33 (seven years ago)

2 has so many magical moments. Like the plant dream sequence in the jail cell, or the bits of animation (within animation), or Hugh Grant doing his best Hugh Grant.

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 29 April 2018 16:46 (seven years ago)

and the cooking in prison!!

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 29 April 2018 21:17 (seven years ago)

Still mad that Black Panther kicked Paddington 2 out of cinemas before I could see it a second time

chilis=lyrics...hypocrits (sic), Sunday, 29 April 2018 21:34 (seven years ago)

Paddington was one of the most surprisingly delightful films I randomly decided to watch last year.I need to remember to watch 2.

Yerac, Sunday, 29 April 2018 21:36 (seven years ago)

Just saw P2 with my daughter. We loved it. Some creative scenes for a kids movie.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 30 April 2018 02:26 (seven years ago)

Yeah watched Paddington 2 about a month ago and it is great fun.
The 70s animation is also very worth checking out.

Bojo Rabid (Noodle Vague), Monday, 30 December 2019 11:38 (six years ago)

Enjoyed the documentary on Michael Bond the other day.
Found a story in a 1969 Blue Peter book that I hadn't read in years. Not sure how aware I was of Bond's career post coming up with Paddington.
I think his ex wife has a stuffed toy of p in the same reversed colours I was given or left with one.

How are these films so good? There are so many ways in which they could or should be terrible, but they just aren’t.
