I think I would live to visit there in the future. What is it like these days? Is it beautiful? Is it scary?

Beautiful AND scary and not very vegetarian-friendly, from what a friend tells me. (her bf is jamaican and she went to visit his family in montego bay) But worth the trouble.

You have to be able to handle hustlers. I got a razor blade pulled on me with 30 seconds of hitting the beach, but I never got into a situation that couldn't be solved with few soul handshakes and exhortations of "maximum respect." Face to face!

There are a lot nicer, and safer, places to visit in the Caribbean. Off the top of my head I'd suggest Barbados, Antigua, or St. Vincent.

They got the sun and they got the palm tress
They got the weed, and they got the taxis
Whoa, the harder they come, n’ the home of ol’ Bluebeat
Yes I’d stay and be a tourist but can’t take the gun play

'not very vegetarian-friendly'

Yes it is, just look for I-Tal and Pure Veg places (to be fair the big hotels are not very vegetarian friendly).

Jamaica is a beautiful shithole, if that makes any sense. Don't go if you get rattled by VERY aggressive hustlers trying to sell you coke, weed, and hookers non-stop, every time you walk out the door. It's a very violent, dangerous place in may ways, far more dangerous than America, Mr. Oops. I was there for twelve days and traveled all over, and while it was interesting it was often nerve-wracking, I don't care how street or open-minded you think you are. There's nothing subtle about the place, it's very in-your-face.

Also, if you're homosexual, definitely do not go.

Kingston, Jamaica (CNN) -- Jamaican authorities declared a state of emergency in Kingston after gang members supportive of an alleged drug lord wanted by the United States attacked police stations and blockaded a large swath of the city.

Two police stations were evacuated after being hit with Molotov cocktails, while the status of a third was unclear.

Gang members blocked off a miles-long area of Jamaica's capital city -- mostly in West Kingston -- using vehicles, sandbags, barbed wire and anything else they could find.

The standoff revolves around attempts by the United States to extradite suspected drug kingpin Christopher "Dudus" Coke. Last year he was charged with conspiracy to distribute marijuana and cocaine and with conspiracy to illegally traffic in firearms in U.S. federal court.
