LOS ANGELES (CP) — Bob Denver, star of the 1960s television show Gilligan’s Island, has died at age 70.

Goodbye, little buddy.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm like dragged.

brianiac (briania), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I even liked him in Dusty's Trail.

I can't help but think of his saddest moment -- circa 1990, wearing That Outfit, sitting on a wicker chair in front of a terribly cheesy 'tropical' poster, trying to convince you, the late night TV viewer, to call in to "Gilligan's 1-900 Quiz Game" or something similar.

RIP -- and Maynard J. Krebs was a golden god of slack.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bob Denver, whose portrayal of goofy first mate Gilligan on the 1960s television show Gilligan’s Island made him an iconic figure to generations of TV viewers, has died, his agent confirmed Tuesday. He was 70.
Denver, who underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery earlier this year, died Friday at Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in North Carolina, according to agent Mike Eisenstadt. Denver’s death was first reported by Entertainment Tonight.
Denver also played the title character’s beatnik pal, Maynard G. Krebs, on TV’s The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.

Actually, my favorite performance of his was when he walked the boards in this classic.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

rest in peace.

He was great on Space Ghost.

Aw, man.. that's tragic. A sad loss....

First John, now Bob. We've got no Denvers left.

There's already a thread about Denver.

rest in piece, little buddy

Believe it or not I seriously idolized him for a few years in high school(more for Maynard, in fact all for Maynard, though I loved GI), it's not much of a stretch to call him a brilliant comedic actor for that role alone. Spark one for me up there Bob!

tremendoid (tremendoid), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:31 (twenty years ago)

it's not much of a stretch to call him a brilliant comedic actor for that role alone

Oh, not at all. If anything you could say he was sharp for not being typecast after that role -- unfortunately, he was then typecast for the next one.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:32 (twenty years ago)

I saw one of these How The Series Was Made shows the other day and they claimed that Gilligan's Island always had high ratings- they only cancelled it because they were tired of the TV critics trashing it.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

(Note sloppy use of the floating "they")

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Oh, it was a ratings smash. Didn't Rod Serling have a famous quote about it precisely because he was angry as hell at how successful it was?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

aieee, Dusty's Trail!

I watched GI long before most of you were born, but must say its enduring status is a benchmark in the decline of American comedy. Liking it after age 12 is indefensible. Seriously, rent some Laurel & Hardy for the Skipper-Gilligan dynamic at 1000x the joy.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

First John, now Bob. We've got no Denvers left.

I miss Denver Pyle too.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

morbius is it really necessary to start your usual condescending bullshit routine on a thread where no one has even attempted to defend the aesthetic value of gilligan's island?

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

Dobie Gillis was such a great show, I watched religiously as a kid and it still makes me smile. Gilligan's Island raised more questions than it answered... "why didn't they just_____?" or "If they can make a _____, why can't they make a goddamn______?" etc.

andy --, Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Well, to be sure, Dr. Morbius, Gilligan's Island is no Bad News Bears.

It's an anti-Preston Sturges- The Miracle of Gilligan's Lagoon.

Because there are only two seamen.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Oh, he will Gil again.

Gilbert O'sullivan, Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Is that a reference to The Last Detail, Dr. M?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

YOU KNOW IT, MOTHERFUCKER

plus we all know Backus was the genius on that show.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

He was certainly brilliant in Rebel Without A Cause, wearing the apron and wanting to get out a pad and pencil and draw up a list of the pros and cons of his sons situation vis-a-vis the other kids in school.

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

A friend of mine had a supporting role on Broadway as a teenager, and Bob Denver played his role in the movie version.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

And you have borne a grudge ever since?

k/l (Ken L), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Not I! Bob was certainly a pioneering overaged TV teen, my friend was 7-8 years younger...

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

some kind of strange resemblence between Bob Denver and Rodney Bingenheimer--forlorn.

I keep forgetting I finally have a copy of that. 25 years searching for it - I find it - I play it once, not all the way through - I put it away to never be heard again.

So I guess you learned all that glitters is not a golden oldie, heh Dave?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 12:18 (twenty years ago)

I really felt pity for Bob when he had to wear the Gilligan outfit for reunion specials as he approached 60.

Ken, have you seen the studio promo interview w/ Jim Backus on the "Rebel" DVD? It's stagey as hell (and in the Dean one, the host looks utterly spooked by Jimmy D) but Backus comes off great. He even stole his It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World scene from Rooney and Hackett ... "I CAHN'T SEE!"

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

Never saw it, Morbius, but it sounds interesting. Did ever read any of those books he wrote with his wife that I never knew existed until recently?

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

what a bummer.

Ian John50n (orion), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

Yes!
Backus: You fly the plane - I'll just be back here, making an old-fashioned.
Rooney: What-what if something goes wrong?
Backus: What could paaahssibly go wroohhng with an old-faaahshioned?

when something smacks of something (dave225.3), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

More than one book? The one I remember was about her caring for him after his stroke.

I think there are a handful of them.

This seems to be some kind of Gilligan/Maynard G. Krebs mashup
