Soft Toys!

I read a letter in the local rags problem page about a guy who'd met the girl of his dreams.

Only problem was - she slept surrounded by bears. And bunnies. And so many other soft toys he couldn't get into the bed with her.

She refused to give them up. She sobbed, she stamped her feet, she cried.

He was asking for advice. Well, apart from the fact his new found love didn't sound old enough to be out of her cot, she was obviously far to immature to be in a grown up relationship. The advice given was "Give her an ultimatum - the bears go or she goes."

I'd expect any man to run a mile from a bed of glassy lifeless eyes, it would be like sleeping in a carnival.

Although I have to admit - I have a bear. He is eyeless, has no stuffing and smells bad. He is twenty five years old. He is the only thing my dad ever bought me. I've slept with him under my armpit or in close proximity to me since I got him for my first Christmas.

He's accompanied me almost everywhere - except those crucial few sleepovers during my teenage years and overnight stays with short term boyfriends. I think he understands.

I don't think have a soft toy is THAT odd, with me it's more of a comfort thing - I'm a creature of habit and my habit is a scrap of bear shaped material I need under my armpit to sleep.

Soft toys - tell me your stories.

I still have my teddy bear. It wears *frumply* knickers. It's brown and the mouth and ears are yellow. But I never take it to bed.

Our little dog has a Piglet from Winnie the Pooh that he carries around with him so it often ends up in bed with us. It's a bit smelly and it's face is matted from being licked.

I had a comfort cloth when I was a kid. From a ripped red t-shirt. It was extremely dirty and smelly but my sweet mother never EVER washed it. I still have it somewhere.

I don't have a stuffed animal any more. When I was younger I had a stuffed horse's head (don't ask - my mum was obsessed with the Godfather at the time) but it didn't make the journey with me to England.

Now it's my Lord Of The Rings pillow. It's skanky, it's smelly, I've thrown up on it several times, but it lives in my bed and if any boyfriend tried to get rid of it, I would get rid of him.

Oh, wait! I have a giant Bubbles that my mum got me, and a talking Scooby Doo, but neither live in my bed. The talking Scooby Doo has been a great source of amusement to several boyfriends - all of whom looked a bit like Shaggy, funnily enough.

I have a bear older than me, given to mum when she was preggers with me. His name's Edward T Bear (heh). He is soaked with years of tears and dribble, and has always been there - even if "there" is on the floor getting dusty for a while.

My bf gave me the cutest floppy plush puppydog some time ago who we named "Dawg" (I'm original aint I?), and hes so cuddly and squooshy and I've been so stressed lately Ive taken to cuddling him feircely in bed. I dont know if my partner minds this, heh. I dont think so. But thats one bear, not like a bajillion.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 06:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh I also have loads of Pucca and powerpuff girl toys and Zim toys and stuff, but that doesnt count.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 06:59 (twenty years ago)

We have millions of them, to the point where we could end up on a Channel 4 show for weirdoes. We just like them and seem to accumulate them, though we're quite selective (and cheap, none of yr Steiff nonsense please). We don't need them to go to sleep or anything, though the ENORMOUS stuffed ant from Ikea actually makes a really good pillow if you're lounging on a floor or outside.

The oldest one I have is a panda which I got when I was a few months old. He has weathered surprisingly well. I think if there was a fire he'd be the first inanimate thing I'd save, if possible. Isabel also still has her oldest bear. The most recent is a small turtle I bought at Glastonbury, I was taken with its mournful face.

yr Steiff nonsense

Hey! Take that back. I have a Steiff stuffed animal. An old one, so probably quite pricey. It's a turtle and LOVELY. Much nicer than your damned cheapo animals. ;-))

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

I'd like a Steiff but they look quite hard. I like a squishy ted.

Rumpie, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

Wow Tom, I had no idea. That really does put the 'freaky' into Freaky Trigger ;)

I had an ill-advised ruthless moment a while ago and threw away Louise, my oldest teddy who accompanied me through every heartbreak for 20-odd years. Happily, I recently discovered my second oldest teddy, Smudge, at my mum's house, and he is now sitting on my bookshelf. I only sleep with him when Matt's away though...

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:49 (twenty years ago)

If anyone ever VER dared throw out my dear Ted Bear, there would be hell to pay! Once mum washed him! And that was bad enough! I cried and cried. I still remember it. I was upset Ted would drown in the machine, haha.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I think I was angry at myself for naming a teddy 'Louise'.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 08:57 (twenty years ago)

I never had a teddy bear (or any other cuddly toy) when I was a child. I think that might be what's wrong with me.

C J (C J), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 10:09 (twenty years ago)

Archel, I can't believe you managed to throw away a teddy! I'm not generally a fan of soft toys for sofy toys' sake, but I would be heart-broken without Special Ted aka The Bear. He's as old as me, quite squished, with a wonderfully stern expression that brings to mind a serious and slightly disapproving uncle. I can't sleep wothout him, as I'm not sure what to do with my arms when I'm not cuddling him. I put him under the bed if I'm getting it on though. One has to draw the line somewhere.

M (Madeleine), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

I HATE people that thinks it's too 'twee' or 'gay' to give your girlfriend a stuffed animal as a gift. Since when is a teddy bear an 'unusual' thing to give a twelve year old?

LeCoq (LeCoq), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

Haha Maddie behind my mild-mannered twee exterior there lurks a heart of iron.

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I always suspected that, Rachel. I rather like the fact she was called Louise: Soft toys that sound as if they're named after the person that sat next to you at infant school: C/D?

M (Madeleine), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

My ted is called Billy.

My mum recently bought me a stuffed rhino to replace Billy, forked out quite a bit for him but he doesn't make the grade - he's too 'good' to get all armpitted and his horn impedes cuddling.

Rumpie, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

OMG wheres the out of context thread ;D

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

I used to have lots of stuffed animals when I was a kid, all of them with different names and personalities, of course. Then when I grew up into a teenager, I didn't care that much about them anymore, so they just disappeared somewhere. However, I always just though my mom had put them in a storage or something. So you can imagine my shock when, one day, when I was maybe seventeen, I asked her about the toys, and she was like, "Oh, I didn't think you'd care for them anymore, I took them to the kindergarten..." (she works in one). I was mightily pissed off! One of the toys, a brown teddy bear, had been with me from ever since I was a baby! The only animal left was this fat mouse that never was my favourite at all, but I've kept him as a memento of all the others that aren't with me anymore. And slowly, throughout the years, I've gathered a new crew of stuffed animals, given to me by friends and close ones who've heard my sad story and took pity one me. Today, they include:

-The aforementioned fat mouse, who's called Ball (I wasn't always that original as a kid).

-A German gay gorilla called Günther, given to me by my cousin as a birthday present (this was soon after I found out about the lost toys, I think that's what inspired her to give it to me). How do I know he's gay? Well, he wears a leather biker cap, a leather vest, and skintight trainer pants (I'm not making this up, that's what he came equipped with). He's been with me to several trips, and I almost forgot him in a hostel in Riga.

-A talking Estonian piglet called Raivo. I got him from this one girl I sorta went out with. What exactly is he saying remains a mystery, but it's a highly controversial issue.

-A lion called John the Small. He was a Christmas present from my mom, she was probably trying to make up for the loss of the old animals. His name was given to him by one of my oldest, closest friends, which has made him more special.

-A puppet/stuffed toy mouse called Natasha. She was given to me by my then closest friend Jenny, and named by the same girl as John the Small, so I have lot's of love for her too.

-A so far unnamed fish-like creature, received as a gift last Christmas from another close friend. She/he is yellow and looks kinda goofy, I'm not sure what exactly is she/he supposed to be.

When you, you know, DO IT, in front of a bunch of stuffed animals, it feels like you have an AUDIENCE.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

Which makes it really disappointing when your climactic finale is met by silent, non-plussed stares.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

I still have three:

my first teddy, a small white bear, very worn by now but I still love it and will never let it go. I probably think to give it a hug about once a year, which isn't enough.

another childhood teddy that I saw in a jumble sale and insisted I had to have. It looks as if it was made by someone less than competent in the craft, and has odd bulges on its head and is a bit uneven. It gives it a wonderfully confused look. I can just about conceive of giving it up, but it's been with the white one for so long that it's hard to think of separating them.

one recent addition, a gift, a beautiful tiger that perches on my monitor, several inches above these words. As a physical object it isn't so important, and it's the person and the sentiments associated with the giving that make it as important to me as the first one.
