i'm @ work, i've a huge headache (the kind that makes my eyes water and my stomach hurt), and i've no access to any pain reliever whatsoever. so, what can i do to relieve the pain? oh, ugh.

15 minute nap?

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

oh, i forgot to mention, i'm the only one in the office today. so, the phones need to be answered and all that.

Coffee. Caffeine causes dilation of the blood vessels. That's why its Excedrin's "secred ingredient".

"secret" even.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

secreted

Cut your head off!

Alternately, sometimes an ice pack on the back of my neck works for me, and sometimes drinking a coke helps, too.

Coffee is probably a good idea if it's available and you have nothing else on hand.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Masturbate. The serotonin dose you get from that will ease the pain at least a bit.

That almost sounded convincing, Tuomas.

I'm serious, fuck if I haven't done it at work. Of course orgasms are a bit different for the ladies, but I don't think their effects differ that much.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

i will go with the coffee/rub it out (ahem) plan. be right back!

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:03 (twenty years ago)

I think the psychological effects of an orgasm are equally important as the biological ones when talking about stress or headache relief.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget to report your findings, Ai!

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:10 (twenty years ago)

ok, i feel much much better, but no 'real' relief. if anything, i feel a little more relaxed and alert/awake. also, i don't feel as annoyed as i was 20 minutes ago. hey!

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

where is n/a on this thread - he knows so much about headaches, he's withholding info!!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

where on yr hand or head or whatever do you rub for headaches? you'll have to point it out to me.

ai lien (kold_krush), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

there's a pressure point in the fleshy bit between thumb and forefinger that's supposed to be good. Also we just had a headache thread and some sort of balm got high marks.

Coffee and more coffee. Is there no first aid kit at your work? They frequently have pain relievers in them. Look around for one. If you find a first aid kit with pain relievers in it, take at least 650mg (1000 would be better) of acetaminophen along with the coffee. Drink a lot of water, too.
If that doesn't help, try grasping and twisting little clumps of your hair (near the scalp, if you have long hair). Not so hard that it hurts; it should feel vaguely like a massage. Picture your scalp as a grid of these little clumps and try to twist every clump on your head.

This works pretty well, but it usually doesn't help me with the more severe headaches.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, we have a first-aid kit here, but the jerks exhausted the pill supply w/o notifying me. i've already ordered more, but it won't be until tomorrow which does me no good now. but i will continue the coffee, pull hair, rub body parts regimen for now. thx everybody. phew!

Whether this works or not depends totally on whether you believe in such stuff.

Are there no pharmacies or 7-11s nearby you can make a dash to for some panadols?

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 September 2005 05:59 (twenty years ago)

six years pass...

Anyone get "cluster headaches"? Identified a trigger? Or a way of breaking the cycle of getting them?

djh, Sunday, 6 November 2011 19:14 (fourteen years ago)

I don't know, what does your doctor say? Cluster headaches are a serious condition, and you should be under a doctor's care.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Sunday, 6 November 2011 19:45 (fourteen years ago)

*NOT A DOCTOR* I read some article about how psilocybin mushrooms of all things are supposed to help with this *THIS IS NOT SOMETHING I AM ADVISING I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THOSE ARE TBH*

despite all my rage I am still just a Latter Day Saint (Abbbottt), Sunday, 6 November 2011 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

Thanks. Yes, under a Doctor's care and it is managed, to a point: I wake up in excrutiating pain, take a tablet and go back to sleep (and feel a bit wasted the next day) - this goes on until the headache's disappear.

This is a vast improvement on my previous Doctor's diagnosis of infected sinuses.

I don't have any sense though of a) why I get them at all, b) why they've come back at this particular time and c) if there's anything I can be proactively doing to avoid them (ie. life style changes).
