"The first rule of Fight Club is - you do not talk about Fight Club". "The second rule of Fight Club is - you DO NOT talk about Fight Club".

I think I remember reading about semi-underground monthly (?) amateur boxing in Oakland.

There was a DiscoveryTimes TV special on the East Bay Rats fight parties last Friday. With a really embarrassing dickwad reporter who loved getting beat up.

What I'd do is find an mixed martial art school with an open mat practice night (this should be easy enough to do in the bay - lots of boxing gyms and kungfu training halls, too) and ask if you can play.

A word to the wise: those who consider fighting a fun hobby tend to be pretty good at it.

Yes, here.

Smoker fights happen all over the country. Its a matter of knowing the right people. Mike Tyson used to be put in them regularly (supposedly somewhere around 12-15 of them, winning all by KO), and his original trainer considered them important to learning the fight game. I've gotten a few inivations myself: I'm usually too damn lazy or don't feel like spending the cash.

Austin's right too. If you want to go roll with some BJJ blue belts, realize that its a good way to have every tendon in your knee torn apart (leglocks are especially popular in the sub-wrestling scene right now).
