Taking Sides: Shoes With Buckles vs. Shoes With Laces

I've only just got a pair of buckled shoes after years of wearing trainers and/or other laced shoes.

I had forgotten how wonderful they were! No more drooping shoelaces coming untied and dragging in the dirt. Plus, shiny buckles just look smart in a way that laces seldom can.

Am I living in the past? There was a time when *all* shoes were buckled. When did it change? And why?

My mum has in her jewellery box an antique Georgian silver buckle that she claims once belonged to Bonnie Prince Charlie!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

I have my buckled maryjanes on as I type! I love shoes like this. Which is funny, cos I'm sure in high school I wouldve mocked myself for wearing such things. Then again, pointy toed witchy goth winklepickers were all the rage back then.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:52 (twenty years ago)

I had buckled pointy toed goth winklepickers! (Tho not the skull buckle boots, which would have been too far, even for me.) Though I was very disappointed to find out that the buckles were on top of SNAPS - i.e. you would set the buckle to be the right width for your foot and then snap them into place for easy access.

Man, I loved those shoes. Even though the buckles were gold.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

I tried to find my photo of my legs and feet in stripy tights and buckled shoes but it isnt online, it must be on me PC at home.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:56 (twenty years ago)

Hahah skull buckle boots! I rememver them. Patent leather ones - my best friend had a pair, ooh I was jealous. Even if they were the tackiest gothiest thing ever. Hey it was the 80s, what would I know ;P

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 September 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

Oh the nostalgia...

http://shop.gothcentric.com/catalogue/images/tiles/kk_skull.jpg

My friend had the higher ones. :-)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Argh! =) I suspect some oldschool crusty swamprock friends of mine probably not only still HAVE a pair of shoes like that, they might even still wear them :-/

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:41 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm not sure where I'd draw the line, but this is definitely on the wrong side of it:

These are more like my shoes:

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Ohmigod, I *love* these...

They are cute! :)

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

but let's hear it for velcro.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 8 September 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

I second that motion!

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Your search - regency rakes shoes - did not match any documents.

Which reminds me! I saw a hillarious Mills and Boon in the charity shop at the weekend called The Regency Rakes but unfortunately the male romantic lead had the same name as an ex boyfriend, and it's a fairly uncommon name (in this country/era at least) so I couldn't exactly close my eyes and think of England. So I didn't get it. :-(

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Xpost VELCRO?!?!? Vile abomination. Get off my thread!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

Haven't you seen my hott velcro-fastened trainers, though?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

i got told off.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:08 (twenty years ago)

Velco is not appropriate for clothes, let alone shoes.

I'm even upset that my bag has velcro fasteners when the last one had buckles and the one before that snaps.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:09 (twenty years ago)

velcro was great for those quiet moments in assembly.
taking it way back, yo. 80s style.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

So what *is* it appropriate for? Quick-release bondage gear?

(xpost)

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

HUMAN SPIDER WALL

Quit it or I'll start posting stuff like this:

i know i said i was gone, but... one last comment, then i'm gone gone GONE:

omg, that guy has his ass on the front of his body.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha, it's from the Jane Austen website, which is hillarious. You can go to the centre and have a Regency Makeover - and there's a photo of some poor bloke whose girlfriend has clearly had him made over to look like Mr. Darcy and he looks SOOO UNCOMFORTABLE.

Anyway, back to the shoes.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

So it seems that shoelaces were already starting to become fashionable by the Regency Period...

The death knell for buckles, oh no...

If anyone wants me, I'll be staring repeatedly at This Page and trying not to drool over my work computer. Sigh.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

(I am slightly disturbed by the fact that one can see straight into Willoughby's fall front. I know that he was supposed to be a slut, but still, I don't think any gentleman would be cavorting in quite that manner!)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh my god... ::fans self:: Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Wow, there's a whole guide on how to tie a neckcloth! I nearly bought the most extravagent paisley one last weekend, but didn't at the last minute because I couldn't figure out how to tie it...

My sister has this pic as her phone screensaver. Nothing to do with buckles or laces or even velcro, but you never meant this thread to be about that did you kate? ;)

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:58 (twenty years ago)

No, this thread was supposed to be about buckled shoes. It's just that my research on buckled shoes kept leading me to... well, where this thread ended up.

I did not think that Colin Firth made a good Darcy, but obviously that's just me.

Anyway, I far prefer Sense and Sensibility to Pride and Prejudice. Except, looking at the pictures, I've decided I want a bonnet.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:00 (twenty years ago)

OPO:

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:03 (twenty years ago)

All of them!!! I wish I had three heads! ha ha ha!!

Serious answer - that one on the top right with the entire rosebush growing out of the crown. I am quite proud of finally getting my rosebushes to flower, so I think that would be a good use for them - adorning my bonnet.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

I was hoping you'd go for middle left (number 2) or middle right (5) for some reason. But the flora would make all the difference.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I don't like those, they're too frilly, more like caps than bonnets. Bonnets should be made of straw and be covered in flowers, fake fruit, stuffed animals, etc.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

Yeah but the ear-covering bits!

Please tell me those gloves are on your shopping list

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

On my shopping list? Why that's what I'm wearing today! In fact, that picture could have been snapped of me out at lunch!

(You cannot see my buckled shoes because my dress is too long!)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Very fetching

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh my goodness! Pearly shoes!
