― yur twit (tehresa), Friday, 13 March 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)
at this point he doesn't even really make movies, he just TIM BURTONIZES existing material. Someone should make a Tim Burton versino of cornifying that just takes existing movies and adds a few gothic twirls and voila

It's not exactly a remake if you shoot a book that other people have fucked up before you.

i second it. growing up with Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands, etc. all his movies had a dark, sad edge to them that felt kind of like how you feel at the end of a good old monster movie where the monster is dead and you're sad cos he was just misunderstood. none of his movies post the early 90s left that feeling in me, even though they hit all the same stylistic markers, color palette, and musical cues. Tim Burton has turned into a Hollywood hack. he shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Svankmajer
― Adam Bruneau, Sunday, 15 March 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)
To be fair Svankmajer's Batman movie was fucking shit.

if u had told me ten years ago that Tim Burton, Alan Rickman, Crispin Glover, and Johnny Depp were making an "Alice" in wonderland I would be ecstatic. now it just seems like a horrible accident in the future you are powerless to stop.
also annoying me are the fanboys saying "the original book was dark/nightmarish"

One of several oddball pornographic musicals from the 1970s. Rather charming if you can conceive that in trenchcoat fare.

no, but the girl playing Alice was really good in the first season of In Treatment.
― Freddy 'The Wonder Chicken' (Gukbe), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:17 (fifteen years ago)
C&C wasn't godawful. hell it was closer to the book than the original musical (which I also like).
― Ballistic, Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:18 (fifteen years ago)
and Sweeney Todd wasn't atrocious and it came after Sleepy Hollow. granted the stage musical like is way better but he did a nice adaptation.
― Ballistic, Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, but it's the only movie where you come out of the cinema humming the songs from the original version. (xpost)
― Mark G, Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:20 (fifteen years ago)
the second one wasn't technically a musical, it just featured the Oompa Loompa songs because they're in the book. the point of the Oompa Loompa songs weren't to be able to hum them....it was the LEERICAL CONTENT. which the original one changed significantly to make more 'tuneful' (and as such, less interesting lyrically).

The one thing I would say is that RDahl disliked the first film because they changed the title to focus on WWonka, but the later film restored the book title but focussed way more on WWonka!
― Mark G, Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)
and as such, less interesting lyrically).
can't believe anyone would prefer the crude genre mashup music of the Burton version to the original songs/lyrics, esp the Oompa Loompa material. takes all kinds I guess. Also, Burton took way WAAAAAY more liberties with the story than the original did. Dahl didn't write any stupid sub-Freudian backstory for Willy Wonka.
― mark roflr (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
The measure of a film's success has got nothing to do with how faithful it is to its source text.

also true
― mark roflr (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)
^^^ totally okay with calling this the worst film i've ever seen. have mainly repressed but:- ironic hip hop oompa loompa makeover is some cringeworthy snappy-talking disney 90s sidekick shit, entirely dependent on having seen the original and appreciating this wacky variation- johnny depp plays a wide eyed eccentric in ________ syndrome- ugly bland cgi shit versus for-real lookin' lake of chocolate- iirc insanely long shitty cgi title sequence and boring generic orchestral score all over the film

― "Fuck Off" to the Buskers (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 27 February 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)
The Oompa-Loompa songs in the remake are amazing, not "ironic hip-hop" at all. Veruca Salt one is a sparkly Byrds homage with 12 string guitars and everything, the Mike TV one is revved up guitar pop etc. And the lyrics are all taken from the original book.
The movie was far from perfect but the songs were the best thing about it.

I can't remember a single song from the Tim Burton one. Could not hum three consecutive notes if I tried. OTOH if someone sings "oompa loompa doompity doo," that shit is gonna be in my head for days. Sometimes even just seeing the words "oompa loompa" starts up the mental "I've got a perfect puzzle for you" jukebox. Which of these traits is worse, complete forgetability or Demolished Man-level headworm action, is for you to decide.
― A Memorable Fancy (Abbott), Saturday, 27 February 2010 01:01 (fifteen years ago)
Plus "a world of imagination", "the candy man can" and the "I want it all" one off the Charlotte Church advert...

Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) was on BBC1 today - I had no idea they made a sequel to the Tim Burton movie, it totally passed me by. I only watched the first 20 minutes but it looked dire, don't know if it picked up later. I love the 60s Jonathan Miller version.
