Is it possible in America to do that thing where a hairdressing student cuts your hair and takes eight hours putting in stupid colours but it is free?

At all?

(And if not is anywhere good in Seattle, Portland or Boston for say 25 dollars or less?)

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 9 September 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

I see ads for this kind of thing all the time, so yes.

nickn (nickn), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:03 (twenty years ago)

Any cosmetology school--look in the yellow pages

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:04 (twenty years ago)

DON'T DO IT

CMB, Friday, 9 September 2005 06:05 (twenty years ago)

seriously, I went to a hairdressing school for a cut once. Afterwards I just cut my losses and shaved it all off. Dude was inept

CMB, Friday, 9 September 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

I went last week and got the best cut I've ever had....for $10. W00t!!

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

That's AUD$10 btw.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:13 (twenty years ago)

Orbit, I'll do that tomorrow, thanks! I just phone the school and ask?

I don't really mind shaving my hair off if it goes wrong, CMB, I am assuming there is a forty-odd percent chance I will need to do this.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:20 (twenty years ago)

Not only is it possible, it's encouraged.

scout (scout), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

Aw, man, the Jean Louis David salon school in NYC. Takes all day, but man, the best haircut and dye I've ever had in my life.

Oh, I miss JLD. I suppose I'm rich now; I can fly over to NYC to get my hair cut if I liked! probably be easier (and maybe even cheaper) than finding a decent salon in London.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:46 (twenty years ago)

Kate I could go to New York! Was it expensive? Did you book far in advance?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

No, it was free when I last did it. (Bear in mind this was... 10 years ago?) I booked a couple of days in advance. Just rang up and got told to come in a few days later - and to be ready to be there all day.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

Also orbit-or-someone-else - how do I tell which cosmetology schools are likely to be good?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:15 (twenty years ago)

You're not swinging through Minneapolis, but for example they have the AVEDA school there (the company started there) where you can have all manner of things done to you, cheaply. It would however take ages for a student to do what is known as a classic Sassoon five-point bob, but the cut would be good.

The cities you mention might well have Aveda esthetiques so the possibility of a model cut is good.

suzy (suzy), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:33 (twenty years ago)

Fly me over and I'll cut and colour your hair for free!

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:37 (twenty years ago)

Marianna, are you good at such things? Your hair always looks so fantastic! Do you do it yourself or do you have a secret hairdresser?

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:42 (twenty years ago)

Gravel, stick with what's in the city. If you get directions to take a bus out somewhere, you're probably in trouble.

jergins (jergins), Friday, 9 September 2005 07:50 (twenty years ago)

Thanks hon! The colour is all my own work, as is the fringe, but since I've been growing my hair I've found I'm only good at trimming long hair (rather than completely re-styling) as I can't accurately cut the back of my hair anymore.

I am wicked awesome at cutting short to medium hair though, and designed/maintained my graduated bob for a couple of years. I am also happy spending ridiculous amounts of time with my curling iron.

Can we have a London ILX Girls night in where we style each other's hair and give each other facials and eat marshmallows and talk about boys and girls?

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 9 September 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

Yes please. I would be up for that. Plus I really need a haircut, I can just about maintain the colour alone and I used to cut it myself, but then a damn hairdresser went and put layers in and now I am foxed. Maybe we should move this off an American thread?

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Yes, yes, yes! Girls' night where we do each others' hair urgent and key!

All I really want is a trim - no way I'm paying some fuX0r £20 for that again! - and maybe some work on my fringe.

Plus, cap highlights. It's hard to do it yourself but with two people it's super easy and quick.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

(How about the day before our next Shimura gig, actually?)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Woo hoo! When's the next Shimura performance?

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

I also need a trim but have no ££ to get one. Mark has had to listen to me complain about my hair for months! Let's put him out of his misery. I am much better at trimming other people's hair than I am my own--I've never been able to trim mine well at all.

Greg, I had luck in the US by walking into a Vidal Sassoon (or similar) salon and asking if they had any students who wanted to cut my hair for cheap. You would make a great hair model--maybe you should just walk into some high-end salons and ask?

sgs (sgs), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

"Hi, I'm Hollywood film star James Franco. I hear [mom & pop salon] is the best salon in town - how about a free trim and colour and I'll tell Tobey Maguire and the rest of my film star buds to come here too!"

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:41 (twenty years ago)

25th September, I think... Anna?

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 09:42 (twenty years ago)

We totally need to get Rachel Apps in on this too. So what about the Friday night before Shimura?

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

23rd September? Cool with me!

Slumber party! Yeah!

Can I invite the other Shimuras?

yay! We were talking the other night about how we wanted a Stylist! So instead of having a stylist, we'll have slumber parties!

(Not Slumber Party, though I love them. Then again, the last time they slept over we swapped clothes and all.)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:05 (twenty years ago)

WICKED AWESOME! :)

Should we make a separate thread so that other girls might find it and decide to come too?

marianna lcl (marianna lcl), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:17 (twenty years ago)

You can do the honours, M!

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

seattle doesn't have a mr toppers?

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I can't do those dates as it's Eoin's birthday weekend ...

Anna (Anna), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:33 (twenty years ago)

I love Slumber Party! The band!

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Me, too. They are lovely ladies, and they make lovely music.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

ok i need a haircut, and was thinking of doing this thing where a student does it for free or whatever, where is good to go, in london?

terry lennox. (gareth), Friday, 9 September 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

How about

?

Markelby (Mark C), Friday, 9 September 2005 11:30 (twenty years ago)

in nyc try the high-end franchises- jean-louis david, vidal, aveda, bumble & bumble, etc etc. since you're a guy, you'll probably have more luck as the demand won't be as fierce and also you probably won't walk out with light green highlights in your fringe.
