Always the same boring elephant in the room.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

you forgot RELIGION

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Easy way to get a thread to turn into:

A: Threads that turn into arguments about CLASS:
Have Dave Stelfox appear on it.

B:Threads that turn into arguments about RACE:
Have Trife turn up on it.

C: Threads that turn into arguments about GENDER:
Have A Woman turn up on it.

:-P

EENEE MEENEE MINEE MO

Old School (sexyDancer), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

I like the CLASS ones because I'm American so I pretty much just ignore them.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:12 (twenty years ago)

It's a fair cop guv, slap on the bracelets...

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

I miss the threads that turn into arguments about SEMANTICS.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

WHAT DOES ILX MEAN TO A POOR BLACK WOMAN LIVING IN AMERICA TODAY MARK?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

I like "Threads Where Marcello And Dadaismus Contrive To Mention Mike Love For No Apparent Reason"

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

a thread about poor brown girls on ILX?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

It's most amusing when a thread descends into ad hominem attacks and backbiting. Class, Race, and Gender are not chosen but anybody can work on their personality.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

I sure like those about ROCKISM...

Baaderonixx and the choco-pop babies (baaderonixx), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

rockism winningly combines all 4, with a side of sexuality.

N_RQ, Friday, 9 September 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I'm not even going to get into the gender issues of insulting other posters by calling them "tits". Either that's a sign of major misogyny or pterophobia. (What is the Latin for fear of breasts? Mammaraphobia? Dan would know... where is he when you need him?)

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

haha - i really honestly don't have any kind of breast phobia.

stelf)xxxx, Friday, 9 September 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Phew! Imagine that, what a nightmare that would be!

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

I like talking about race and class, at least as far as their social dynamics. But people aren't generally very good at talking about either, I don't think -- class will sometimes get good discussion, but with race people tend to stake out one of a limited number of positions and then just yell across at everyone else. Which is too bad, since race and our social conceptions of it are totally fascinating, at least to me, and I kind of like talking about them in contexts that aren't big shrieky arguments about who's racist and who's not. I like talking about gender, too, though I'm not as good at it, because at some point someone brings some bits of theory into it, and I'm not conversant with that stuff. (This is kind of a great/funny effect of men not taking gender studies classes: they should just put it on the syllabi, "read these books, and then next time you're arguing with a guy about sex and gender, just reference one of them, and that'll wrap that up.")

I am with Casuistry, though -- more than anything I like threads that turn into arguments about semantics, etymology, grammar, usage, punctuation, etc.

nabisco (nabisco), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

But a TIT is a kind of BIRD
(Oh no - not only have I missed the point, I fear I may have made it worse.)

Pete (Pete), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

No, seriouly, Dave. Do you actually just open threads, hit ctrl-F and search for "middle class"?

pterophobia = FEAR OF BIRDS, Pete. We discovered this this morning on another thread.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

jesus christ.

this is such a white middleclass thread.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

As usual, Nabisco very OTM.

However, it becomes hard when the ad hominem attacks start going.

Luminiferous Aether (kate), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Fear, baby, FEAR!

Baaderonixx and the choco-pop babies (baaderonixx), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Stone Monkey (Stone Monkey), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 9 September 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)
