new year's eve: classic or dud?

expensive, impossible to get to and from anywhere except on foot/horseback (don't even think about bastard taxis), generally cold, everywhere full of gobshites. massive pressure to have good time ultimately leads to being miserable from start to finish.

staying in, with friends, watching new year's eve telly: still anti-climactic. what's the answer?

clive, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i like new years eve, but don't love it. i go to bed about 10 or 11 pm, am asleep when all the business is on, and then get up really early on new years day and go for a walk. new years day can be really empty and lovely.

a couple of years ago, my mum, my sister and me drove from London back to Bradford on NYE, and by 10 pm the motorways were really empty, and at one point we could see no other cars on the M62.

gareth, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New year is horrible. But I like Gareth's answer. Maybe I will just go to bed early!

james, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Years Day is perfect for that Day of the Dead emptiness. Even in cities you can imagine the everyone's gone, like the book 'Tokyo Nowhere' - long shots of the city, abandoned.
New Years Eve can be notoriously bad. Last year I rang friends up, all over the country at 4 in the morning to find out where the ended up - outside waiting for someone, stuck on the hard shoulder. So it's not just me who's disappointed.

K-reg, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Its terrible and I hate it. the only answer is to take some serious drugs. and even that may not save it.

Ronan, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick, i got your e-mail, but i'm having trouble accessing my account at the minute, should be ok later tonight. i'll reply then. cheers!

Lol Hi All, :) It really must be a dud because I can't stay awake that long( to welcome it in)

Gale Deslongchamps, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

champaegen, kissing pretty boys at midnight , auld lang syne , petty sentiments, its all good.

anthony, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i generally don't go out on new years eve because there are too many scarey drunk people screaming "happy new year!" at you and the like. but i always enjoy myself just with staying in with friends, having a few quiet beers and watching telly.

di, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

james, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dud. There's always too high an expectation placed on having a good time which will inevitably end up in disappointment. The best NYE I ever had involved a car accident and a very weird girl.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mercy's sake you lot. It's not great but it's not bad. Your expectations are your problem not anyone else's - Gareth seems to have an excellent idea. Me? I enjoy it. Not generally a good idea to go out that night because of all the people who hardly go out any *other* night, but I usually see friends or family and have a good, intelligent, time. Can't remember one I really HATED. Classic.

Tom, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth's idea is a quality one, I reckon, one which I may steal this year. my opinion of new years eve has been poisoned by a string of terrible ones, bah. like that time in 1996... (everything goes misty.)

sorry tom, something about the way you said 'good, intelligent time' made me laugh - I'm not sure why.

clive, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For better or for worse, I can't remember too many New Year's Eves. My favorite New Years will always be the one when I first got drunk. My parents would always go out on New Year's, and on our first New Year without a babysitter, we shut ourselves in our parents' room (where the stereo was, and we locked out our little sister). My brother went down in the basement to select some booze. He came up with two tall glasses of straight cognac. I said, "I think you're supposed to mix that with something..." And he said no, that you should drink it in a tall glass, like a glass of milk. I knew he was wrong, but I was trying to be as macho as he was. He was gulping it! I drank some and diluted it with tap water when he wasn't looking. I think we had another glass after that, too.

Kerry, Thursday, 20 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Remembering what we were doing last year, "good, intelligent time" made me laugh too.

Pete, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hey anthony i like champagne and kissing pretty boys too!! i like NYE but only in people's houses. i hate all that mob action on the streets.

katie, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think that was the beer talking Pete. But you can only know intelligence if you have plumbed the depths of idiocy, after all.

Tom, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

new years eve tv = dud. stay in, with friends, all wear the spangliest dresses you can find, pu t choons on, dance around, eat things, drink things, laugh and hug and dance and give each other stupid pressies. just DONT put the tv on (esp. jools holland's bloody hoootananny)

katie, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dud generally, as I know some people who are notorious for going home early. This years crew however, well I have hopes. i would not mind spending most of the evening in so all the teens have drunk themselves into comas and are in cells before I get out on the town

Menelaus Darcy, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

gareth and katie both have NYE sussed, in their own way. usually I do what gareth does, this year for a change I expect to be doing what katie does.
that's it. merry xmas and a happy 2002 to all on ILE.

Jeff W, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

New Year's Eve can fuck off. Has a tendency to put all my failings and insecurities about being English (and me) into sharp relief. I enjoyed it in 1999, quite. That's the only good one I've ever had.

N., Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can't decide whether to stay in and think I should have gone out or go out and think I should have stayed in.

Ronan, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this is just a really boring time of year.

duane, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight years pass...

Seriously, is there any way to actually enjoy New Year's eve?

I'll be coming home from a 12-hour shift and drinking champagne with my husband. The good news is that I don't have to go back in until 2 the next day, and then only for four hours....

Happy birthday, en i see kay.

Going to a very nice beer based restaurant with my parents and another couple their age as usual - since I don't have (m)any IRL friends and we've been doing this for like forever. Don't care much about missing parties and heavy drinking, I'll be having some very good food & not much of a disturbed biorhythm when I get back to work on Monday. Getting old, innit. :D

I've always found it really depressing and, for some reason, Auld Lang Syne makes me tear up.

ENBB, Friday, 31 December 2010 04:43 (fifteen years ago)

we can't decide if we want to get some champagne and watch funny shit on tv and be lazy

OR

if we want to go to a rowdy sports bar that is one of the only places still open here

keep in mind, we moved recently to a very small beach town that is in the middle of off-season. the town shuts down for winter and there are not a lot of options for going out.

Sister is dating a (CONTROVERSIAL MOD EDIT) (Nijoli), Friday, 31 December 2010 04:44 (fifteen years ago)

My train of thought in these situations is that you always go out, and if you're bored of what's going on at the time, you can go back home and then the appeal of your first option becomes even more enjoyable.

because that's what the raiders are there for

mookieproof, Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:28 (fifteen years ago)

i'm no raiders fan, but jim plunkett was a great QB, and it's an outrage that he isn't in the NFL HOF.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:30 (fifteen years ago)

Xpost ORLY bc that's what I thought the Steelers were there for :D

And Daniel I agree, Plunk should be in no doubt. Ken Stabler too though I feel like they may never put him in bc his stats & ints kinda kill him.

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 1 January 2011 04:55 (fifteen years ago)

Was basically like a good Friday night out with mates in the pub, with extra mates who aren't usually in town and more free food and drink.

clemenza, Saturday, 1 January 2011 14:33 (fifteen years ago)

NYE actually not too bad this year. Went to my best friend's place where he had a bunch of people over. Two people ended up fucking in the guest room shortly after midnight and another puking off the deck. Pretty glad that wasn't me tbh. Home by 2 but with a sick puppy at 7:00. :( Really hoping I don't wind up at the animal hospital today. I've already spent two New Year's Days in the ER for myself (non-drunk related illnesses) and it's not fun.
