Orbit in Houston

I'm thinking about visiting the NASA Space Center. I'll be there Mon, Tues, and Wed of next week (Sept 12,13,14) but I only really have one day (Wed the 13th) to do any sightseeing. I'm staying in the Galleria area hotel.

Suggestions? What can one do in Houston in a day?

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 10 September 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Go to the Rothko chapel!

Go to the Menil collection!

What about Saturn? Don't you wanna see Saturn? Everybody says it's gorgeous.

The Rothko Chapel looks really cool, but it seems like someplace you would go during one of the events/lectures and there aren't any when I'll be there. Thanks for the idea, though. Very interesting place.

Orbit (Orbit), Saturday, 10 September 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Ok wait--I looked at a map--the Menil collection looks excellent and the Rothko Chapel is only a block away. I'm definitely considering this. Thanks for the tip, Ken!

Also--is anyone actually in Houston and able to tell me about the Metro system there? I can't load the Metro page and I've been trying since last night. It just times out. I'm looking for a Metro map so I can see how practical my plans are in terms of getting to the Museum district from the Galleria Mall.

Also, if anyone wants to join me for a drink in the evening (after 8pm on all 3 days), let me know.

(xposts)

there are other threads about Houston, but i'll repeat a bit of what i've said there here.

I haven't been to the part of the city (Post Oak) that you're going to, but it's supposed to have lots of nice houses (this is the rich, residential area of town). the Johnson center is definitely a worthwhile trip for a couple of hours on top of the drive time, but it's not super-enthralling, and I'd rather see the city itself if i had limited time.

if I had one day, I would go to the Menil Collection, a national or even world class private collection museum housed in a piece of serious contemporary architecture, then head (you can take the bus along Bissonnet) to Goode Co. for a real texas barbecue lunch. afterwards, check out Rice University and Hermann Park (you can take a longish walk through these from Goode Co), checking out the garden area in the latter, and, if you have some extra time, visit the quality, fun museum of natural science or the art museum (MFA), which has a real, solid collection, but might be most interesting for the traveling exhibitions. have dinner at the local and feminine mediterranean-accented T'afia in midtown (the ensemble/hcc stop on the trolley). afterwards, head (take the trolley) up to mostly-empty downtown and check out the arts center area. if you don't want to spend money on good theatre/opera/ballet, or head across downtown to the (supposedly very nice) new baseball stadium, check out the nighttime outdoor tejano concert (a comparatively big scene) at Jones Plaza. if you're still not done, have a drink at the (cab-distance) West Alabama Icehouse, a local institution.

also in the food dept - Cafe Annie, a haute Mexican in the neighborhood you'll be in, is supposed to be the best place in town or even the state. for some serious Southern-accented breakfast/coffee, and a nice buppyish scene, check out the Breakfast Klub next to T'afia.

the metro system consists of a trolley that goes from downtown through midtown, the museum district, the medical center area (below Hermann Park), out to the Superdome. it goes nowhere near your hotel. however, there are buses that go from the area you're staying in. i'm sure they go to downtown, and i think they go past or near Goode Co, the Menil, and midtown.

the trolley costs like $1.25 for a ticket that lasts 24 hrs. i have ridden it probably 10 times, and never seen a person who would take my ticket.

the Rothko Chapel is impressive-ish for a short visit, but i think you have to be more either a) spiritually-inclined, or b) death-obsessed to get more out of it than I did. it's worth seeing, but if I were going a block away from the Menil, I'd head first to the Dan Flavin installation.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 11 September 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

more places to have drinks downtown
- Artista, a decent restaurant in the Hobby Center arts complex, with a view of the downtown skyscrapers
- the stylish bar at the Sam Houston hotel
- Whiskey Chicks, famous for its, um, mechanical bull

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 11 September 2005 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Be sure to visit New New Orleans.

M. V. (M.V.), Sunday, 11 September 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

Thanks gabbneb--actually I did try to be a good citizen and search threads for Houston, but it just spun its wheels and I never got anything.

Great suggestions! It's always amazming (but no longer surprising) that affluent areas of cities don't allow public transit to connect to them. The hotel can prob tell me how to get a bus to the point where I can take advantage of the rail system. What a pain, though!

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 September 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

out to the Superdome

heh. interesting switch.

M.V. I already donated what I could. I don't want to go and gawgle. I plan to stay away from that area and let the people who are helping do it without interference from a one-day tourist.

from this page you can get downloads of bus schedules. the 82 Westheimer goes from from the Galleria area to downtown.

how I would do it:
head to the menil by cab, or on the 82 (to Westheimer and Mandell, then walk a few blocks South to Sul Ross (below Alabama)). afterwards, walk East to Montrose Ave, and walk or take the 34 Montrose Crosstown South to Bissonet at the museum District. if you're going to Goode Co., take the 65 Bissonet west to Kirby and Bissonet, and follow the smell a half block North. afterwards, walk East to Kelvin, then South to Sunset. continue South if you want to walk through Rice Village (a shopping mall/commercial area), or East if you want to stay residential. if you're going South, turn East when you hit University Blvd. if you're going East, turn South between Greenbriar and Shepherd. these will bring you to the football stadium at Rice. from there you can continue East through the campus. when you reach the gate at the far end, cross over Main to Hermann park, and turn right towards the garden. loop back through the park and up to the museum area. then get the trolley on San Jacinto between Ewing and Binz up to midtown (Ensemble/HCC) and then downtown (Main Street Square). after checking out the fountain south of the station, head up Main St to Texas St, then head West to Jones Plaza. to get back to Post Oak, head two blocks east to Travis, and take the 82 back. but if you want to go to the Icehouse, head just one block East to Milam and take the 78 Alabama/Irvington. afterwards, get a cab home or walk several blocks north to Westheimer to catch the 82.

gabbneb, you should really consider this as a profession. also, wedding planner.

about the breakfast klub

there's nothing on yet at the nationally-renowned Alley, but while in midtown, you could check out a play at the Af-Am-centric Ensemble.

gabbneb you are the best! thanks! That breakfast klub place is one place I will definitely get to. Thanks for the tips, I think I'm going to have a very pleasant Wednesday.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 September 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Oddly www.ridemetro.org just times out. I wonder if they are blocking people outside the city being able to access the transit page for some bizarre Homeland Security reason.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 September 2005 02:25 (twenty years ago)

nb that if you have breakfast there, don't plan on lunch. maybe don't plan on dinner, either.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Sunday, 11 September 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

oh, also next door to T'Afia, there's a branch of Austin's rockabilly Continental Club. on the 12th, there's a band there called the El Orbits.

Orbit (Orbit), Sunday, 11 September 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

for just a day, i'd go see the menil collection (the rothko chapel is close to it because it's part of the collection... i like the byzantine chapel more). the menil is free, and not exhausting to visit like the giant MFA. fine dining is beyond me, but for bars i like la carafe on market square downtown because it's very old and very dark.

you can get around by bus, but given a single day, i'd figure out where i want to go and get taxis... the public transit system can be tricky and getting lost could blow your afternoon. also, it'll be hot. only mid-nineties, which isn't bad for houston in september, but it'll be humid and being out and about in it will quickly get tiresome.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm coming to get her in a car and take her to hmm, well defintely the Rothko Chapel b/c I love it and the Menil. Probably the Orange Show and Art Car musuem. For drinks. . .Mary Jane's and West Alabama Ice House.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Sunday, 11 September 2005 05:57 (twenty years ago)

i never knew the west alabama ice house was so popular!

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Sunday, 11 September 2005 06:08 (twenty years ago)

It's probably a bit yuppie but we lived near there and liked to drop by for the picnic tables.

Miss Misery (thatgirl), Sunday, 11 September 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

i like the bubble tea place in the randall's shopping center near there. you should take her to house of pies!

I've always wanted to go to The Outpost Tavern - it's at Egret Bay Blvd. and NASA Parkway. It's been around since the Apollo days and it's where astronauts, engineers, etc. would go to drink beer, fight, and build the space program. Supposedly they have a huge collection of space-related stuff there.

I had the good luck to be taken out to dinner at the Strip House in downtown. Good food, but pretty expensive.

three years pass...

i had a half day to myself in houston today. the breakfast klub is fantastic indeed. so's the mfa (menil was closed today). i walked along westheimer west of montrose, i didn't feel like getting a tatoo, a polyester shirt, or a dildo, but i talked to a cool girl who was riding an old three-speed and smelled of patchouli. then i caught a long bus ride back to my hotel in greenspoint, where i'll be trapped for the next couple of days.

collardio gelatinous, Wednesday, 6 May 2009 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

i kept telling myself that the entourage sitting near me at the b'fast klub was a crunk crew. how dorky.
