TS: Dawn Vs Swamp Thing

So I've been watching some season five "Buffy", and also reading the early volumes of Moore's run on "Swamp Thing". Joint theme for the two characters: no you are not who you thought you were, in fact you're NOT EVEN HUMAN and you NEVER WERE!

Swamp Thing's a lot more gung-ho about the whole rescuing your loved one from the afterlife thing (he just wanders off into the afterlife and works his connections - Deadman, Etrigan - until he can get his wuv back; Dawn tries for a spell but wusses out at the last minute.) Dawn's encounter with alien lifeforms is quite disasterous; Swamp Thing's is just sort of puzzingly twee and downbeat. Nota Bene: Swampie is kind of whiny (tho not excessively so, within his context), but not at all shiny.

(I do love Dawn tho...I mean, not LOVE love, she's no Willow or pre-Buffycrush Spike or Anya, but...the episode where she gets introduced is so awesome, her diary entries...seeing the Buffyverse from such a fresh perspective, it was quite a neat trick!

This thread fills me with awe.

A couple of bloody enormous spoilers in your opening there! I mean, I've already experienced both, but they'd piss me off if I was just getting there.

Haha, I remember back a few years ago when I posted a spoilerrific Buffy thread and some moderator labeled it "SPOILERS SPOILERS ARRRRRRGH!" I just figured by now everyone's seen all of "Buffy", and anyone into comics has read Swamp Thing.

I guess I never learn :(

(if a moderator can add a spoiler warning to this I'd be very obliged)

Can we compare Swamp Thing on tv with Buffy comics instead?

dawn is so so hot. i'm sorry but it's true. most of my male friends seem to think this attitude is shameful because she's so young, at first, but whatever. she's way hotter than swamp thing.

i met dawn (m trachtenberg) today!! no joke!!

Oh weird. I just made a comment about Swamp Thing (which I'm also currently reading) on the Constantine thread. I never made the Dawn connection though there are obviously some major parallels between Buffy and Swamp Thing. The whole story arc in book 4 with the big battle against evil but it's not just evil but the very thing that evil itself is afraid of -- something that existed before evil and lurks in the shadows, etc, blah blah -- so very Buffy. Even the psychics and magicians forming a circle to give extra power to the people in the thick of battle was lifted directly by Whedon. He's admitted that Giles = Constantine right?

I'm a big Buffy fan but come on, how much more awesome would Buffy have been if she grew hallucinogenic yams on her body?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 12 September 2005 05:27 (twenty years ago)

That Buffy cover looks great, is the inside any good? (and someone should post that Paul Lee one-off about Dawn that ripped off Sienkiewicz New Mutants!)

Amber Benson (Tara) has written some Buffy comics!

i met dawn (m trachtenberg) today!! no joke!!

omg! What's she like??

He's admitted that Giles = Constantine right?

Wow, yeah, Constantine = Ripper. Though I most say, dialoguewise I think there's more overlap with another certain someone:

Oh, and carly, isn't S5 Dawn the same age as S1 Buffy or summat? Not too different, anyway. And S1 Buffy was definitley perved on, all the time, by all sorts of people!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

nice yams.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:40 (twenty years ago)

There's a definite Spike / Constantine visual parallel but I'd rather see a character based on Billy Idol than a character based on Sting.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

trachtenberg was really sweet, as was her bf (iceman in the x-men movies)

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

daniel, it's true - though i think dawn as key is 14 and buffy season 1 is 15. freshman vs. sophomore. but it's been pointed out to me that 15-year-old buffy is never as helpless as 14-year-old dawn, and is never presented as such. she's a great deal more innocent than later buffy, but she's worldly and selfpossessed, even as a young girl, in a way that dawn isn't, so dawn really seems child-like at times when the comparison is made.

even with breasts.

carly (carly), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 02:37 (twenty years ago)

also, SMG was 20 when the show started, Trachtenberg was 16 when Dawn's eps aired. Most people are (presumably) perving on the actresses rather than the fictional characters.

Best Dawn scene was her grinding with the magick quarterback, Xander and Willow perving on her unknowingly.

otm, one of the few redeeming moments of season 7.

carly (carly), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 02:57 (twenty years ago)

swamp thing by thousands of yards

kephm (kephm), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 03:13 (twenty years ago)

> buffy season 1 is 15

16 i thought, wasn't the whole thing that she became the slayer at 16? or was that the film?

how does 'Book 4' of Swamp Thing translate into issue numbers? it is the American Gothic bits? Murder of Crows, Fish Story, The Sound Of Hammers, The Curse, all of those?
