Record companies sue 'Ellen' show over copyrights
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Some of the world's largest recording companies are suing "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," claiming producers violated their copyrights by playing more than 1,000 songs without permission.
Many of the songs were played during the "dance over" segment of the show, when DeGeneres dances from the stage to the interview area, often through the audience.
According to the suit filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Nashville, when representatives of the recording companies asked defendants why they hadn't obtained licenses to use the songs, defendants said they didn't "roll that way."

Also, God hates her.
She had a comedy bit about megadeth a long time ago. I wonder how many people became megadeth fans via Ellen.

No. You've made up your mind; nothing I point out that makes me laugh is going to make you laugh because you've already decided she isn't funny, ergo I'm not going to waste my time or yours trying to convince you otherwise.

A big part of why she's popular is because she seems likeable/relateable. I haven't seen her talk show, but I kind of liked her stand-up act and sitcom because she had the same kind of nervous, self-conscious brand of humor as Bob Newhart. (I remember lots of routines that involved her saying something, then humorously digging herself into a hole as she tried to explain what she meant.)

I haven't really made up my mind, I haven't seen enough of her to really make a judgment. I just don't understand what the appeal is exactly, like what her comedy angle/schtick is, what it's rooted in.

I've seen her ads, bits of her show, random concert footage - I just don't get why a vaguely goofy lesbian has become such a mainstream fixture. she's less abrasive than Rosie, so there's that, but... take that bathroom/hidden camera clip, there's no joke there, really. that's like something an 8 yo would do and find really funny. is that really all it takes to be super-popular? cuz that's a joke/schtick that's pretty much entirely devoid of personality.
I love Newhart, yeah

I just don't get why a vaguely goofy lesbian has become such a mainstream fixture. she's less abrasive than Rosie, so there's that, but...
Wow... are you seriously pigeonholing her as a "lesbian comedienne" or something and comparing her to Rosie solely on the basis that they're both dykes? What the fuck? You do realize she was A) hugely successful before she came out and B) has changed little abt her shtick since before she came out?
― limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

― limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:50 (fifteen years ago)
calling her a "vaguely goofy lesbian" seems to put a lot more weight on it than is actually there.
― limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)
and yeah frankly her sexuality is central to her public persona, what with her being the first out character on a TV show, etc. lots of America isn't cool with homosexuality (altho in general lesbians are given more of a pass than gays) so there's some kind of interesting dichotomy/dynamic at work there
― Here is a tasty coconut. Sorry for my earlier harshness. (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:51 (fifteen years ago)

― NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)
Well, I mean, at the time (circa 1997) it was, and she made an abundance of jokes--some forced, some funny--about her homosexuality, but 13 years later it's totally not really the point anymore. I would completely disagree with saying her sexuality is central to her public persona or has been in the last 5+ years. But that's part of why she's so awesome, is because she is this huge milestone and has managed to go past it and not get stuck on lolesbian jokes the rest of her life. I mean, yeah, they're still there every once in a while, but "central"?
― limp bizkotti (Stevie D), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 22:57 (fifteen years ago)
I think that's interesting tho! That she didn't just become a one-joke footnote to TV history. that the American public collectively seems to have said "eh, we know yr a lesbian, so what?" and kept her in the top tier of successful mainstream comedians. that seems strange to me! And I don't really know what to attribute it too (and it's not just "she's funny", because there are lots of really funny people who disappear for all kinds of reasons)

― NUDE. MAYNE. (s1ocki), Tuesday, 25 May 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

Ok! I was helping set up my sister's wedding with my mom & a bunch of her friends from church. The topic of Ellen came up, and they all really like her. Reasons stated:
- she's funny- she does dances on her show- her dances are funny- their kids like Finding Nemo
The dancing thing came up a lot.
