Search function isn't really helping me dig up earlier iterations of the subject, and even if it could, I fear they'd all be out of date. Shopping = primarily, but not exclusively, clothing and accessories. What do you like / recommend? Talk talk talk, ladies and gentlemen.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

What sort of accessories?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Vacuum accessories, Alex. Various sorts of nozzles and attachments.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Nabbo, are you looking for gentlemen's attire in particular? On first glance I thought you were looking for recommendations for your own use but now I don't know where I got that impression....

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

Clothing-wise, there are some nice-if-not-especially-cheap places on the Western end of Bleeker Street (say, northwest of 11th Street). I like a spot there called Gerry's. But, honestly, it's sorta Ben Sherman/Fred Perry sorta gear, so perhaps that's not your thing.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

I remember the Stussy shop and the Adidas shop being on the same street. buggered if I can remember the name of it but I could walk there right now. They were both cool though

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

Well, yeah, Laurel, I'm thinking partly for my own use. I've been a poverty-line grad student since I got here, so I haven't done much shopping beyond a few cheapish standby places; some new clothes will help with my ongoing transition back to the status of human being. I'm not that important, though: I think we should make this a rolling NYC shopping-scene discussion thread! Discuss places, prices, styles, etc.

Last I checked, my go-to for cheap jeans was long-gone to somewhere or other in Brooklyn -- Rejoice on the L.E.S.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

What I tell all boys of a certain age: shop APC if you can (read: if you can afford it). I'm never in love with their women's lines but the mens' are always the picture of subdued cool.

NYC store at 131 Mercer in Soho

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Rejoice moved to N9th between bedford and driggs. its owned by the kids in blood on the wall!

phil-two (phil-two), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

I was actually looking at the new lines on the APC website earlier, and .... eh, so much of it seems not worth it! I'm with you on liking the look of a lot of it, but the bulk of the designs are subdued / austere / classic enough that I kind of start thinking I could probably find the same thing elsewhere for a lot less. Could definitely be tempted by the stripey sweaters, though (Phil rocks APC stripes a lot, right?) -- and will definitely see what the new Rejoice is looking like, though in that neighborhood it's gotta be picked-over like nuts.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 12 September 2005 20:58 (twenty years ago)

I also really like Gerry's (bought a nice winter coat there last year). I somehow can see Nabisco in some Seize Sur Vingt although it's a bit pricey. I've done pretty well at the Penguin Store in midtown - not so expensive. I also like Agnes B but also pricey. And then there's always Barney's and Macy's and Saks.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 12 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Odin on 11th street b/w 1st and 2nd. or is it 2nd and 3rd. right by cinema classics. one of best menswear in the city!

Get thee to century 21. (thursdays are new stock days still, i think)

mouse (mouse), Monday, 12 September 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

if you need socks, THE SOCK MAN on st. mark's (bw 3rd and 2nd) is your best friend. (though the argyle socks i bought from there have all been decimated by repeated washings, but i wuv everything else there)

otherwise, i mostly shop at the H&M at herald square, so i am also interested in other stores worth my time. i passed by APC tonight, those jeans are v. nice indeed

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:12 (twenty years ago)

oh oh! i'm esp. interested in where i can buy some nice SHOES. there's like eight zillion shoe stores here and i haven't sussed out the worthy ones

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Is this only guys fashion in NY? I have no good input on that topic. On the girls front, I bought a cute Hello Kitty shirt at Olive Bette's when I was home in August, which I think is the only clothing I've bought in NYC this year. NJ has no sales tax on clothing, so that's where I generally go shopping, although at least NY is better than the 8.9% we have in Seattle.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

I'm probably not the best person to answer this because I'm still impoverished, but...

When I need a pair of shoes, I go to that strip on 8th street b/w 5th & 6th Ave. I mainly buy various chuck taylors or vans there, though... I bought a pair of Campers (in soho on, er, woooster maybe) last christmas and haven't needed anything new yet. Those things are indestructable-- and damn expensive. They have an incredible sale every year before Christmas-- I got a $210 pair of boots for half-price.

Century 21 (across from WTC on, er, Church) is good for socks and undies. You can get new Calvin Klein-level brand stuff for wonderfully cheap.

Also, urban outfitters (ugh.) isn't a bad place to get solid color t-shirts and the occasional pair of pants.

I've never been, but my girlfriend and her friends make the occasional trip to Beacon's Closet in BK and come back with a lot of goods vintage what-not.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 01:49 (twenty years ago)

got a pair of hanes briefs at cvs somwhere on broadway earlier in the year. still have them in the bottom of the drawer. ive been picking up choice chuck taylor all-stars from a shoebox sized place in the village for years now.

for sneakers? nom de guerre, downstairs (down that metal staircase, down the hall) on the corner of broadway and, like, great jones? or bleeker? right where the swatch store is, i think and next to two boots. and union on spring street. dave's quality meats on east 3rd between bowery and 2nd ave.

for non-sneakers, i dunno. costume national if you have like $400 for shoes.

i want these though:

There's these people called Sunday in the Bowery who rule. God be with the days of Broadway Sbneakers. Supreme on Lafayette sometimes have nice stuff, especially Peter Sellars t-shirts, for example. You can't lose with Peter Sellars, chien.

Anyone have any recommendations for a psychiatrist? Asking for a friend (really)...

Manhattan preferred, but other boroughs are OK.
