Whenever someone calls me "brother," I feel like saying, "Spare me the hobo bullshit, 'brother,' what is it you want from me exactly?"

I'd say it's got to be around 100% of people who use this phrase are slimy assholes masquerading as decent citizens, no?

Is that embedded in my subconscious? Did I just ripoff a movie script?

Oh right, the song. Yeah, there's a few songs that do it and for some reason I don't mind it in songs because it's generally supposed to be bullshit.

I had a similar reaction recently when reading an account from a Katrina survivor, referring to his fellow flood victims as "my brother and sister flood survivors". While I understand and respect how such traumatic experiences can bring people closer together, I cringe at the hippy sanctimony of the expression.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

Hm, never thought of the expression as hippy, but for me it's permanently linked to "brothers and sisters in Christ/the Lord/God's Word/prayer/take your pick".
