This thread was prompted by me inadvertently befriending the lovely ickle Big Issue seller who hangs outside the cinema, and Kodanshi saying he buys one sandwiches every day, but I want to make it broader than that, so...

People you're on friendly terms with who you inevitably see regularly who you would never ever go out of your way to visit: bus drivers, postmen security guards, shop assistants, waitresses, that kind of thing, who you could just do your business with but you actually talk to them. How many of these people do you know? I'm intrigued by how, even if you see them every single day, how you become friends with someone like the bus driver. That one befuddles me.

John the coffee man. A nod means coffee plus egg & bacon sandwich, a shake of the head means just coffee.

There's Oscar in the cafe next door. The world's most cockney sounding Italian bloke ever. We became mates because I buy toast there every morning and he talks nineteen to the dozen and knows everybody as a consequence.

The bouncers and the bar staff at the Kitchen nightclub where I go often. My friends second name is "sammon" and since the bouncer said "any relation to John West" I've liked him. Yeah it's not funny but still.

Case Study A: Desk "security" people at work.

"Chris": friendly middle-aged woman.

"Mister July": Sullen elderly Jamaican man.

The friendly one is the first-name basis person.
