i have downloaded a dvd-r as an iso file - is there any method i can use to watch the film, considering i don't have a dvd writer?

I think the question covers it.

The answer is: mount it as a loopback filesystem.

How easy this will be to do depends on what sort of computer you are using.

I think you can .zip it across several thousand floppy disks.

I am using an old computer. and old gateway pc that generally plays most avi/divx files capably. one that can't even read dvd-r's. (the plan was to wait until a friend of mind finally gets their broadband setup and send it right over.)
What is a loopback filestream?

there is a program called daemon tools, it creates a virtual drive that you can mount files from and basically works as if you burned it onto a disc. i think it mounts iso's. then you could just watch it with vlc player.

and it definetely does mount iso's because i just tried.

I had this problem a while ago and then discovered, with the help of ILE, that the freeware VLC Player (which I already had) will play iso files just fine, just like that.

Arrgh – I tell a lie. It was a .bin file, not a .iso one.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 13 September 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

that might work too actually. vlc is very very good with all sorts.
