The only thing better than this is the sightings of formerly huge stars who are now on their way down. Martin Sheen was doing very well in this vein until Aaron Sorkin rescued him.

The last one I was in before this (Seattle, '94 or '95, about the same mild strength of today's) I remember the news interrupting prime time programming for an endless session of "Mary Jones has called in to say she felt it in Renton, and that quote the water in her glass was moving unquote" and "Bob Smith just called in to say they felt it in Poulsbo and quote a picture moved on the wall unquote" and I was all PUT PARTY OF FIVE BACK ON YOU FUCKERS WE GET IT ALREADY!

today's didn't feel "mild" to me. the bldg i was in shook for almost ten seconds. it was probably the most (sorry) unsettling one i've ever experienced

building i was in wobbled quite a bit but tbh the shake wasn't really very scary where i was aside from the confusion -- we evacuated not knowing anything or being able to get any calls out, so i had to go out to my car and turn on the radio to get confirmation that it was in fact an earthquake because hey you never know

The quake disrupted a news conference on the Dominic Strauss-Kahn affair given by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance.

lasted a good 45-60 seconds where i am in brooklyn. i'm on the 4th floor, fwiw. sometimes i can feel the subway rumble under my apt, and it felt like that at first, but got significantly stronger, which the subway absolutely does not. the building was shaking, and something in a closet fell from a shelf.

Felt it out in Westchester, house shook noticeably for like 10-15 seconds maybe? I thought it was from work being done outside but was a little concerned bc never felt that level of shaking from work being done before. Not like rattling the cups off the table level, but probably the biggest one I've felt.

My buddy working in Manhattan got a good scare. He's been in several earthquakes but in quake-proof buildings.

Felt in queens; at first agree that it felt like a truck but lasted too long and became more intense.
Everyone on the block was out on the street conferring immediately afterward.

You get used to it. Usually takes me a second or two before I clock one and then I go "Hmm, should I care or not?" If it continues/intensifies then yes.

Coincidentally I just learned about the Cascadia Subduction Zone from Tiktok; supposedly the chances have risen for something to happen in the next 10 years, since they found some fluid leaking out of the fault line which usually happens when things are under increasing pressure.

My reaction eventually went from kind of a touch of fun fear, as in "hey, just a little bit of fun, let's be cool" to land on a more scary fear "hey, what actually happened and what about aftershocks etc, is that a thing I should be thinking about?"

everything in my bedroom was shaking. pretty freaky. i felt a tiny one here years ago but this was a whole other thing. i thought there had either been a gas explosion underground or it was an earthquake.

just crazy that i am so far from the epicenter. good reminder that i have absolutely no control over anything ever.

The opposite for me. New Zealand is one big earthquake zone and then I moved to California. Every earthquake I always thought “oh fuck is this it?!”

just1n3, not sure where you are, but the first quake I ever experienced (very minor) was in Southern Illinois. New Madrid Fault is no joke.

Not to worry you or anything but yeah the New Madrid quake probably won't make you feel quite as secure, however it seems unlikely that another one of those would happen anytime soon.

Hah yeah, was going to say... don't look too much into New Madrid. I remember feeling the 2008 one, woke me up at 4:30 in the morning.

Yeah I know but it’s not the same - when you’ve lived your whole life on a fault line it’s just an insidious thing constantly in the back of your head. I don’t have that same kind of weight on me anymore. Like it’s not impossible but it’s not a looming worry.

Of course, if we have to go all the way back to 2008 to find one of note, it's clearly not the same magnitude (sorry!) of a life impact as it would be in California.

I asked my kid if the earthquake scared him at school. "No, it was great. We got to stop a math lesson and hide under our desks."

At least with earthquakes, there are things you can actually do to make buildings safer.. my building just had a seismic retrofit last year (soft story)

with toronados (which actually have a SEASON) all you can do is hide in a bunker if you can get down there in time

none of the kids in my daughters school felt it. She just heard one of the adults talking about it. Got a message right away from the school that they did a safety check and decided to have recess indoors just in case. That sort of seems counterintuitive, like if the building's gonna fall down wouldn't it be better if they were outside? But I don't work in emergency management so what do I know.

When did you move to Boston? We had one in 2013 or 14 that we felt so much I got nauseous and we had to rcacuate out building in Longwood.

I was terrified of an earthquake the whole time I was at NYU. Theres a huge fault line under the east coast that's due for a bit one and I can't even think about how horrific that would be. It took me months to get used to the subway rattling under my dorm.

I used to worry/talk about this so much that a friend got actively angry with me because he said there would never be one in NY and I was nuts. Anyway I am very glad ppl seem to be ok.

I (lol British, obvs) never really think of the east coast as very earthquakey. West coast, absolutely - spent way too much of my lovely trip up the Space Needle fixated on the bit in the history blurb about how they'd earthquake-proofed it and how it'd be just my luck to be up there when some big bastard earthquake hit.

Last week I booked a trip to NYC. So there's some new panic to consume me over my holidays, hooray.

Another tiny one a minute ago that I could not feel but my wife could and apparently others in the borough?

I always think of it like this: The 'Big One' could come in four minutes, or four hundred years.. and no one can control it. So I don't worry too much
