OH HOW LOVELY.
LOOK AT YOU...
JUST CRAWLING ALONG THIS CHOCOLATE BAR I'VE MADE IT HALF WAY THROUGH.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:27 (twenty years ago)

It's not that I mind sharing... but EW GROSS

Anyhow - I have no idea what I should do.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:28 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. OK, well, uh, we found, uh, this mouse in a bottle of YOUR BEER, eh. Like, we was at a party and, uh, a friend of ours - a COP - had some, and HE PUKED. And he said, uh, come here and get free beer or, uh, he'll press charges.

and take photos just for proof.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:31 (twenty years ago)

Already done.

I have not been able to swallow for 20 minutes now.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

this changes my view of maggots. i thought they only liked stinky rotting meat. but they like chocolate too hey?

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:34 (twenty years ago)

He appears to have enjoyed himself a good little bit of it too. Fucking fat ass magg0t

So do I call the Aer0 bar hotline???
Should I induce vomiting?
Do I write my MP? Write a song?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Wait, was the maggot INSIDE the chocotreat? Or just in the packet on the outside of the choc?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah write a song! an indie ditty about a maggot in your aero would fully fit into the emo craze.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Um, not that it matters really, cuz ew ew ewww!

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

Hey Thermo what's grosser than finding a maggot in your Aer0 bar?

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

ahahahah HALF A MAGGOT

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:39 (twenty years ago)

You're not helping the poor man! =)

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:43 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha.
he was chilling on the outside - but I also have photographic evidence of the parts of the bar he got to.

gem - you've given me an idea!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 03:47 (twenty years ago)

that statistic is from the "book of lists".

what, do they have a list called "acceptable amount of maggots, by food"?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

also don't feel bad, once i found half a cockroach in my campus lunch burrito.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:10 (twenty years ago)

i thought it was a badly burnt bean, at first, until i saw the little twitching leggys.

TWENTY MAGGOTS per 100g can of food? Awwuughhghg *vom*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

That cannot be right.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:20 (twenty years ago)

check those lists for "rat droppings" too.

Upton Sinclair didn't accomplish all that much in the end, it seems.

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

yeah surely that is wrong... that would mean thermo could only complain if there were more than five maggots in his aero bar, isn't a chocky bar 50g? he didn't get photos of the ones he already ate...

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

he didn't get photos of the ones he already ate..

well, there's always one way that he could...

kingfish superman ice cream (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:31 (twenty years ago)

that maggot looks a lot bigger than 2mm! are you sure it's not just a WORM?

anyway the avg weight of a maggot is like half a milligram. so in 100g of mushrooms you're only getting 5/1000 of a percent of maggots-by-weight.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

maggots-by-volume might be larger than that, though. how dense is a maggot?

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:35 (twenty years ago)

probably depends how much chocolate he's gobbled

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

do maggots pooh?

Chocolate

Defect: Insect and rodent filth.

Action level: An average of 60 or more insect fragments and one or more rodent hairs per 100 grams.

Example: A typical 2-ounce chocolate bar could have as many as 36 insect fragments and about half a rodent hair and still be sold.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he is a worm. i've named him Coco.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

i note it doesn't say anything in there about insect faeces. but coco must be getting rid of it somewhere.

gem (trisk), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 04:47 (twenty years ago)

That's gross, but at least the maggot itself has come out of its close contact with your Aero Bar remaining quite tasty-looking.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:09 (twenty years ago)

If you look closely at the pic he's got chocolate all over his wittle face!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

Man, I'm so hungry right now. Yesterday I made the mistake of trying a Buttered Popcorn Jelly Belly and now this - I'm scarred to put anything else in my mouth!

Maybe I'l just rely on the sun's rays to provide me with the nutrients I need.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

after reading some of the fda compliance reports i never want to buy any food ever again!

They are just being realistic.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

You should have gone for mint aero - it tastes nicer and it has maggot-proof green insides.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:38 (twenty years ago)

If you've ever collected mushrooms - porcini specifically - then the number of maggots you get in them is truly staggering. You just try to get rid of most of them (maybe even throwing away the most infested shrooms) and the rest will die during the drying process.

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Can maggots cause heart burn? i don't normally suffer but had a bit of it last night.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

There's no way that's a maggot. It's a caterpillar!

once i bought a pack of cigarettes from a convenience store up the street. got home and opened them. took one out to smoke it. set the pack on the table. i noticed a tiny hole or 2 in the paper of the cigarette but didn't think anything of it and lit it up. but then i did start to wonder about it. perhaps the other smokes in the pack also had this flawed, holy paper. so i took out a few. there were more holes. then i saw something moving on the table next to the pack. a tiny beetle. then i saw more. in and around the pack. 30-40 tiny little brown beetles. all crawling in and around the cigarettes. the celophane had holes in it. i was disgusted, naturally, and put out the one i was smoking. i took the pack back to the store and told them i wanted to exchange for another pack. they laughed at first but i showed them what was up and they obliged.

http://www.whatsthatbug.com/pantry.html(12/11/2003) Dear Bugman,
My roomate and I recently opened up a chocolate bar only to find a fat worm/maggot had eaten a hole right through the bar. The chocolate was in a box full of more chocolate bars that are maybe a year old. We were totally disgusted, and when we opened up the remaining bars, we found a few more that also had the worms. The worms had eaten holes right in the chocolate and on some, they seemed to shave the top of the bars off - there was chocolate shavings on the surface. Some of the worms looked like they had spiny tails, but it was hard to tell for the others whether they also had the spines. Do you know what kind of worms are these? And how did they get into our chocolate??
Kate

Dear Kate,
Pantry beetles are known to infest chocolate. The immature beetles are wormlike grubs, much as you describe.

Haaj nz, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

"I look on the table and on the chocolate, and there's a maggot walking around," she said. "It's really disgusting."

the real story here is these walking maggots.

also, they got the bars at a Shell station. that's where i got the beetled up cigarettes!

I have arranged to meet with an entomologist named Dana Ludwig, who works in the FDA's Alameda, Calif., Filth Lab, which analyzes thousands of samples of foods, most imported from the Pacific Rim, each year. In a moment of social ineptitude, I have asked Ludwig if the ludwig is a relative of the earwig.
