Does your home town have a pub called The Ritz, The Ritzy or Raffles?

I'm seriously considering making The Ritz in Glasgow my new local.

It is by far the best name ever for a pub.

Sounds like a place you'd get stabbed

How about the Titz, if you say it right it doesn't sound like the 'tits'

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 08:33 (twenty years ago)

or perhaps the Roffles?

Ha ha, the reason I said it sounded like a place you'd get stabbed is because Glasgow full of incongruously named boozers where you're likely to get stabbed. I remember recounting to my brother about how a guy had just got shot outside a pub in Toryglen called Tickety Boo, and my brother said, "They should rename the pub, Clickey Boom".

Raymond Douglas Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 08:39 (twenty years ago)

... oops, "They should rename the pub, Clickety Boom"

I'm not sure about the stabability in The Ritz. I attended one saturday afternoon and you could've heard a pin drop.

Very clean, very quiet, there was an old woman sleeping in the corner.

I think it's new, I have high hopes for the place.

Hmm we have a gaybar here that's called The Ritz....

'Tickety Boo' was Jojo's catchphrase in Down Among The Big Boys, so I always associate it with gangsters, albeit unconvincing comedy gangsters.

xp

i've never been in The Ritz in Glasgow (according to Google Maps there's one in Cambuslang as well) but it would be good to say you were spending a night at the Ritz or some such...

I called quite a few people that afternoon to say "Yah, I'm in the Ritz dahling, drinking gin. I'm frightfully drunk, what."

Rumpie, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:00 (twenty years ago)

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:01 (twenty years ago)

But anytime is T time.

Rumpie, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

There's a Raffles Hotel/Club/Pub in Como, Perth, Australia. You Am I wrote a song about it. Sort of.

Rumpie, walk 50 yards further down to the Bon Accord - the beer's much nicer. We went to the quiz at the Ritz once without realising it's exactly the same as at Hubbards. We were good kids and fessed up after round one.

Mädchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

"Ritz" stopped carrying any connotations of glamour at some point in the mid-80s when "Ritzy's" was the name of half the squalid 3 quid a pint and a kicking off the bouncers small town nightclub in Britain.

What's the crowd like?

I like that end of the town, perfect for curry.

Rumpie, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Raffles. It sounds so louche

it just makes me think of those charity tickets people from work make you buy every so often

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

We have a Ritz here where the barflies go.

smee (smee), Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

You must check the place out smee. I was pretty pished when I arrived so that may be clouding my perception of the place.

It was very clean.

Rumpie, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

still one of the best venues to see bands in manchester.
especially on the balconies.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 14 September 2005 12:34 (twenty years ago)

Bouncy dancefloor! Do the punks still throw bottles at you? (This is about the Manc Ritz, not the Glas one.)
