Socially Acceptable Street Foods

This is bothering me.

Last night I saw a middle aged man, casually dressed, walking through the town centre with an ice-cream cone (avec Flake).

This disturbed me, and in fact I can't recall ever having seen any lone ice-cream eater ever walking through the town centre.

I wouldn't do it. I asked my boyfriend and he said it would never occur to him to buy an ice cream cone for himself and eat it alone.

Am I crazy or is this an okay thing to do? Would YOU do it?

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:44 (twenty years ago)

Of course. I don't get how you could be disturbed by such a thing.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

actually, that IS kinda weird. i wouldn't do it.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

i've probably done this. maybe it was me.

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:48 (twenty years ago)

Are you all mentalists?? Do you buy an ice cream from a van and then take it home to eat it (probably with a knife and fork)??

Markelby (Mark C), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

If one wants an ice cream cone, why not buy one and consume it, regardless of the status of one's company? I wouldn't think twice about it.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:51 (twenty years ago)

What's wrong with eating ice cream?

Is this the first recorded example of street food rockism?

Eating ice cream on one's own, how inauthentic...

, Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:54 (twenty years ago)

It's probably a freudian thing. If it had been a woman, it'd be arousing!

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, a quick straw poll in my work has produced varied results - the majority saying No - they wouldn't. Nobody can tell me why not though... I don't even know why not myself.

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:57 (twenty years ago)

i can't envisage eating an ice cream cone alone.

i'd quite happily walk down the street, alone, eating other foods - a tray of pasta, a bag of chips, a lollipop, packet of haribo, a box of wet, milky potatoes...
but not an ice cream cone. that's a social food.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 09:58 (twenty years ago)

take or leave us only please believe us we are never going to be socially acceptable

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:01 (twenty years ago)

I regularly walk down the street eating ice cream cones. Well about five times a summer, when it's warm enough. If someone was doing it on a day like this I might think 'hmmm...'.

alext (alext), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

It was at night, around eight o clock, the weather - cold and overcast.

Not that it makes a heck of a lot of difference though.

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:42 (twenty years ago)

Maybe it was not weather related at all, but some kind of childhood nostalgic moment, the taste of 99 flake being the taste of summer or childhood, or something else he was missing on that cold and overcast night?

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:44 (twenty years ago)

I wish I'd stopped the fella to ask.

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

WTF? Anybody who is surprised by a lone ice cream eater, or who actually takes the time to decide it's unusual is batshit crazy. Like whoa. You only eat ice cream socially? Are you ralph malph?

Lumin, Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:45 (twenty years ago)

i never claimed not to be batshit crazy.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Batshit is actually incredibly interesting stuff. It's made of the pulverised exoskeletons of insects, and is surprisingly light and clean. It crumbles away to dust if you rub it between your fingers.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

GUANO.
it's also the material ingredient for the Fireball spell in AD&D 2nd edition.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:48 (twenty years ago)

i don't get why this is odd

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:49 (twenty years ago)

fuck you and your street food fascism.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 15 September 2005 10:54 (twenty years ago)

There should be LAWS and PUNISHMENTS to deal with solitary ice cream eating.

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:02 (twenty years ago)

but why? what is wrong with it that makes it (a) unacceptable or (b) punishable?

i thought ice cream was supposed to be a nice little treat, not an unlawful punishable offence

gem (trisk), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

I guess I'd be burned at the stake or hung at the Tyburn tree, then.

(Perhaps that should be my hook for internet dating - looking for a pointy nosed blond boy for non-solitary ice cream eating. But alas, I'd get only twee fuX0rs.)

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:03 (twenty years ago)

Only slightly connected.

On holiday last year there were people queuing up to buy the most delightful ice cream from a little stall at the side of the road.

We watched a young couple each buy a small tub of ice cream and set off down the street with it.

The man was relying quite heavily on a crutch, and seemed rather dismayed to realise he couldn't get tucked into his ice cream with the dinky little plastic spoon. His partner strolled ahead oblivious giving it "mmm, delicious" while he lagged forlornley behind with ice cream melting and running down his arm.

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

it's just the simple "This disturbed me" that disturbs me

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:12 (twenty years ago)

Weirdest thread ever.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

How about eating french fries on the street?

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:25 (twenty years ago)

Perfectly acceptable.

Even ice cream from a wee tub wouldn't have made me think twice.

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Wee tub?!

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:35 (twenty years ago)

wee tub is far more acceptable than solo cone munching. what's wrong with you popel?

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Wee tub?!

Could be wrong but I think he's referring to this:

http://static.marktplaza.nl/images/1/Baby-Born-potje-695837.jpg

Just kidding.

nathalie (stevie nixed), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

some people think going to the cinema on your own is for saddoes. obviously they can get bent, but otoh, i have never bought popcorn alone. it doesn't feel right. maybe i will now.

N_RQ, Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:40 (twenty years ago)

i'm with matt here. this is ridiculous. what is wrong with eating an ice cream on your own in public? i've done it hundreds of times. the only time this would be even vaguely strange is in the middle of winter or when it's raining. it's certainly better than tennents super and lots of people seem to consider this acceptable to consume on the street.

sfxxx, Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

I've eaten a Tangle Twister alone, but it felt kind of dirty.

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:41 (twenty years ago)

it sounds fuckin dirty, too.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

Ice cream better than beer?

This thread is spiralling out of all control.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:43 (twenty years ago)

I have eaten an ice cream cone, a Mr Whippy no less, on my own on a street corner.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

solitary confinement for you!

gem (trisk), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

what if a person were walking alone in the street with a can of tennents in one hand and a mr whippy in the other?

gem (trisk), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Drinking Super Lager in the street has been proven to be socially unacceptable - especially when one vomits upon oneself and stains ones trousers.

It is not a food either.

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

x post

on a street corner? what kind of monster are you?

Rumpie, Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

i love walking down the street with an ice cream cone, it's one of the loveliest things about springtime or summer. sometimes it's nice to do small celebratory things alone.

ice cream is perhaps the ultimate street food because it's almost entirely self contained. you might have a napkin to dispose of after but you largely eat the container, the cone, which is 100% classic.

carly (carly), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Best in a pint glass with a big whippy floating on the top. I wonder what the froth would taste like.
(crosspost)

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:53 (twenty years ago)

Chocolate stout ice cream float. Now there is a concept!

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

sometimes it's nice to do small celebratory things alone.

Yes! Hurray.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

and fnarr, obv.

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

The logic behind this is that ice cream is FATTY and therefore only ok to indulge in as a social tool.

I can eat ice cream whenever I want because I have a 200 watt metabolism.

~~~~ DODONGO DISLIKES SMOKE ~~~~ (ex machina), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)
i can eat ice cream whenever i want because i am confident enough in myself as a person to do so. either that or i'm a shameless fatty.
g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:07 (twenty years ago)
i don't like ice cream. alone or in company.
gem (trisk), Thursday, 15 September 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)
my fantasy is to get on a bus with a Cup-a-soup.
Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)
you should do it. pot noodles on-the-go is great (you use those hot water 'pot-stop' machines at petrol station)
ken c (ken c), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:17 (twenty years ago)
No, it has not yet been unanimously decided.
Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)
Plate of spaghetti on the subway. Real china plate, real silverware. You could add more touches like a little table, wine chilling on the side, etc. but that would be too much like Trigger Happy TV, which is not funny.
Der, Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)
Oh, I didn't realize it was kyle who revived it! oops
[jailhouse tattoo] (nordicskilla), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)
Ice cream: still unacceptable?
HI DERE, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)
I don't understand this 'disturbed by lone ice cream eating' position in the slightest. I think it may be a sign of sociopathic tendancies.
There's an international food fair here in the summer. I can definitely say that foods of all cultures can be eaten while walking down the sidewalk, but I would not recommend doing it with kimchi. Nor would my friend who ended up spilling it down the front of his pants while talking to me.
mh, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:37 (seventeen years ago)
Kebabs are almost always consumed on the street, but are rather poorly designed for it. Even the 'wrap' style with flatbread rather than pitta tend to be so greasy that you inevitably end up with blobs of fat and garlic sauce all down your jeans.
chap, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)
Shashlik is unacceptable in public.
snoball, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 14:43 (seventeen years ago)
ive notice in many other countries people will stop to eat their street foods - where as in america we tend to eat and walk
i don't really feel comfortable eating, drinking OR smoking while walknig unless ABSOLUTELY necessary (ie. i am starving or parched or v. drunk and in a rush) and this is probably due to years of childhood conditioning, hell, i still feel weird eating not-at-a-table (unless it's candy or something at the copmuter) or in the company of others.
i think part of the weirdness of the ice cream cone thing is that it's kind of juvenile and kind of "low" insofar that seeing a businessman-looking-type eating an icecream cone without the excuse of having a child or date with him is just... weird? i can see where it comes from.
whatever, i hate ice cream anyway.
I would eat an ice cream on my own.
I never eat any take-away in the street. It's not good for one's digestion to eat and walk at the same time. It is also v easy to inadevertently drop food on the ground, ncouraging rats and adding to the general untidiness. I always take them home and eat them there.
Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 15 May 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)
Your search - "grocery groin" - did not match any documents.
