Considering most of my mates verge on being junkies and I'm a complete teetotaler with very little in common with them -- no.

I am only influenced by my friends in the areas of music, literature, food, movies, leisure activities, dating, sexual experimentation, educational choices and career options. Other than that, I'm my own woman.

"What does that tattoo say?"

"'Individual'."

"Why've you go that then?"

"Because all my mates do."

I have a feeling I'm a worse influence on most of my friends than they are on me. There are a tiny handful of people with whom its the other way round - coincidentally I think all of them post on ILX.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 15 September 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Yes. But I also tend to be an influence on them. I thought that give and take was what friendships were.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

partners yes, to a degree. friends, very very little.

jimmy glass (electricsound), Thursday, 15 September 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I don't think I'm influenced by the people in my life very much. In fact, I think I'm the antithesis of someone who is influenced by people around them.

Bombed Out and Depleted / Kate (papa november), Thursday, 15 September 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I'm with Jim - I tend to absorb some of my partners interests, I never mean to but it happens. Friends, I usually already have a fair whack in common with so whats to change?

Which is why I'm a bit puzzled by this:
Considering most of my mates verge on being junkies and I'm a complete teetotaler with very little in common with them -- no.

Um, why are such people yr friends?

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 15 September 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

I used to be, until I started hanging out here.

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 15 September 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I typically choose friends who I tend to agree with on most important issues, and whose opinions I respect. Taking that into account, I think I take what my friends say very much to heart. Is that the same as being susceptible?

Laura H. (laurah), Thursday, 15 September 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

The correct answer for me is: yes, until I know them well enough, at which point the "Narcissism of Small Differences" kicks in.
