Give me your desperate recipes

Looking in my fridge/cupboard tonight, hungry. Raining outside. Need food. What do I have? I have

Linguini pasta
Some ham my girlfriend brought me back from Barcelona
Half a lime
Spring onions
Garlic olive oil
That hot sauce Ned gave me

Boiled up pasta, heated up oil, fried onions, threw in ham, threw in pasta once soft, squeezed in lime and a big dollop of Ned's sauce.

Result: OK! Eminently edible with a nice tingle from the hot sauce.

So give me your best recipes from random things you have or had lying around, things that you would never make unless forced by CHANCE. As and when you make them or previous successes/disasters. PLEASE. OK.

P.S. Bonus points for using out of date ingredients.

Back when I was a poor penniless student, carrot curry was made on a day when I only had carrots, onions and curry powder (the cleverly improvised trick being to simmer the onions and carrots in water with the curry powder, then liquidise half the mixture to make a thicker sauce to pour over the remaining drained carrots). It was surprisingly good (n.b. I was very hungry so would have eaten it even if it had tasted like cardboard)

When my ex was a kid his family went through some hard times. He made a sugar sandwich and made it last a long time, hiding it in a hole in the wall behind a piece of furniture, getting it out for a bite, putting it back.
When I was a totally broke mom I once served my kids the following breakfast:
Toasted hamburger buns
Ginger ale.
They probably loved that breakfast.
Long time ago. Much better now, don't send food.

That hot sauce Ned gave me

:-) Glad to see it has come in useful!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Said sauce, for the curious. It is of the gods.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Ned!

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

Why isn't this thread called Ready Steady Ally Cook?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

i love the cock sauce! my mom asks for it like that, shes like, "ai lien, pass the cock sauce."

ai lien (kold_krush), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I made chicken adobo last night because chicken, vinegar, soy sauce and garlic were nearly all I had left in the house.

O'so Krispie (Ex Leon), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

What's "chicken adobo"? Is it where you photoshop the ingredients into it?

C J (C J), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Ramen noodles, served in their broth, with seaweed. This is a meal that costs like, maybe $.27 at the most, and, as long as one has water and a means to boil it, can be prepared anywhere (such as on a campfire in the wilderness [recommended]). I try to always keep a couple packs of Ramen and some dried seaweed in my cabient at all times, just in case.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

CABIENT! THIS IS WHAT SIGUR ROS PLAYS WHEN THEY RIDE IN CABS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

That's the opposite of desperate. That's well-prepared!

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

When my ex was a kid his family went through some hard times. He made a sugar sandwich and made it last a long time, hiding it in a hole in the wall behind a piece of furniture, getting it out for a bite, putting it back.

This is such a powerful story. My grandfather has a lot of stories like this. He used to hop fences in the very wee hours of the morning and steal eggs from his neighbors' chicken coops, got shot at a couple of times.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 September 2005 18:59 (twenty years ago)

I guess yr right Albs. Um, once when I was drunk I just crushed up the Ramen in their little packet, sprinkled the flavor powder in their, shook it up, and ate them raw.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 15 September 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Quesadillas: all you need is tortillas, cheese, and a gas grill.

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Thursday, 15 September 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

its completely appropriate that ally was eating cock sauce

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 15 September 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

my old flatmate once boiled a large piece of ageing broccoli, tipped half a bottle of tomato ketchup over it, then sat down and tucked in. IIRC he tucked a napkin into his collar for the full effect.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 15 September 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

What exactly are you implying, HOMOSEXUAL TOO?

RJG, tonight, desperately searching in the fridge.

"I have cheese!!!".

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 15 September 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

what kind of cheese was it?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 15 September 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

Cheddar. I think.

Ally C (Ally C), Thursday, 15 September 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

I am going to have cheese on toast

I only have cheese and bread and milk and cereal, in the house

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:36 (twenty years ago)

I am not considering combining all those into one dish

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

C'mon, man, live dangerously.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

cheesy milky bread!!!

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 15 September 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Time to steal some eggs from the neighbor's coop. Then you could have croque monsieur, minus the ham. A french toast-grilled cheese hybrid.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Thursday, 15 September 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

I could steal some of ally's girlfriend's barcelona ham

he did offer

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 September 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

there is a co-op, up the street, but it is closed, no doubt

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 15 September 2005 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Spaghetti and vinaigrette salad dressing, while broke (not recommended)
Frankfurters and apricot jam, while stoned (surprisingly, not bad)

Surfer_Stone_Rosalita (Surfer_Stone_Rosalita), Friday, 16 September 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

I've been known to microwave a potato, slice it in two, butter it, and - voila - finger food.

jim wentworth (wench), Friday, 16 September 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

pasta with butter salt and pepper. It isnt too bad really.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 September 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

Oh even better - jasmine rice, with loads of butter salt and pepper.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 16 September 2005 04:25 (twenty years ago)

I see this thread has deteriorated to the point that we are enumerating delicious foods! Is it lunch time in your time zone, perhaps?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

That hot sauce Ned gave me

this was quite phenomenal when stirred in with minced beef, pepper and salt to make hamburgers for my 30th bday bbq.

foxy boxer (stevie), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

My friend had the munchies and virtually nothing in his bachelor fridge. He rustled up boiled frozen peas on dry toast.

elisabeth k, Friday, 16 September 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

Hungry again! What now?!

Actually I could have the same again, I guess!

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 16 September 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Lazy Bad Dinner

koogs (koogs), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Don't like pizza, much.

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Than you deserve whatever shit you eat instead.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

You're absolutely right!

Ally C (Ally C), Friday, 16 September 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

This morning I had to saltine crackers crushed up in a bowl, poured milk over. very cereal-like. Sugar sandwiches are also very nice.

jxnx (jxnx), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

To make a powdered soup into a real soup, whisk in an egg.

JTS, Friday, 16 September 2005 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Simple chocolate cake in seconds

Heat up sugar in pan
Add melted chocolate (to own discretion)
Add baking soda

Within seconds it will ball up to a gigantic mass of chocolately goodness.

JTS, Friday, 16 September 2005 21:14 (twenty years ago)

Omelette savoyard

Put 3 tomatoes, 3 bacon slices, 1 onion, 1 clove garlic and some mushrooms into a blender
Crack 3 eggs into the blended mix.
Put in frying pan and layer some Brie or Gruyere cheese slices on top.
10 mins later... put it in the grill for 1 minute to set the top

Now you have made Omelette Savoyard in minutes

JTS, Friday, 16 September 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

These are things a home alone hungry 17 year old needs to know :)

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

anyone who has GRUYERE, EGGS and BACON is not desperate

Except when they are still within the cow, chicken and pig, respectively.
