In my mind, I'm inagining an extra box to sit with with my hifi that'll talk to my router, get onto my hard disk, and let me select which MP3s off my hard disk I want to play. It them plays it through the hifi. Does such a product exist? And if not, why not?

Yep, this, or numerous other similar things.

Or this, if you want more fancy bells and whistles.

Or, phwoar, this little fella. I'm going to have to stop looking these things up, before I start spening money.

why not just plug the computer into the stereo?

Well, cos even relatively quiet PCs still make a fair bit of noise, and that's not really what you want in the same room you're trying to listen to music. Get a little box to do the job and it'll be silent, while your hard drive chugs away upstairs somewhere.

(no tivo updates for years. no new tivos for years either. we have been forgotten and abandoned and left to the clutches of Sky+)

those shuttles do a nice job of being quiet and not looking like a pc.

there's software available to turn the standard xbox to a media player too (which loses points for being microsoft hardware but wins points for being easily interfaced to the tv)

how is the user interface on these things? how easy is it to change the playlist or is it just like having a 200G ipod shuffle?

i have the Slimdevices "Squeezebox" and it's very cool. I think there are better available but it's fairly cheap (i got the wired model) and it allows me to scroll through my iTunes music library, search, create new playlists, read RSS feeds etc. Invaluable when you have all your music digitized and love vegging out on the couch!

I haven't heard someone call it their "hi fi" since 1981.

Doesn't the Airport Express do this for the Mac?

nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 16 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

yes, it does, but you have to get up to change the song and you can't tell what's playing if you don't already know. these other devices allow you to see what's playing, browse through playlists/artist/album/song etc. categories and create playlists on the fly. Airport Express will only stream the music, no other control available.

Oh bugger. Also, I wonder, can more than one person use this? Or does it stream directly from itunes (so only one person can use it)? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I'm a moron.
