Who bought the bodice? Who drank the mead?

andy --, Friday, 16 September 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I went to one renfair once. I realized the full magnitude of my awful, awful mistake when I saw the one "ride" they had was a jousting simulator that consisted of a barrel tied to some ropes that swung into a pole.

I ran away and never looked back.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

My SCA-obsessed roommates in 3rd and 4th year at UCLA not to thread. They put me off FOREVER to the idea of going to one of those.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

TS: SCA vs ska

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Ska.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

One of my female friends had sex with the guy from the knife-throwing booth out in a field. She says he laid his cape on the ground quite gallantly.

(this was many years ago)

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I went this summer for the first time in about ten years 'cause I had free tickets. I got my hair braided and ate fried ice cream.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

The traditional medieval delicacy of fried ice cream.

n/a (Nick A.), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I gave the rest of my free tickets to the parents of a four year old who loves pirates and knights.

tokyo nursery school: afternoon session (rosemary), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:34 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha, Luna's got some Renn Faire stories. Oh Luuuuuu-naaaaaa...

don't hit me please ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I bought a bodice! It was actually for this French and Indian war thing in my town that I worked at though for the girl scouts, so kinda excusable.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

A bodice like this lusty wench's? Look she has a tankard o' mead in her hand!

andy --, Friday, 16 September 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

And Ye Olde Elephant Ears, yum yum.

My demo group performs for at least one ren fair(e) every fall and it's awesome; anyone in the NYC area should come up the Cloisters/Ft Tryon Park on the October Sunday (forget which date) and partake of the hilarity. There's no admission fee and everywhere you turn there are bodices near to bursting, misguided goths and SCA types, extravagant get-ups handmade by costumers, jousting with balsawood lances, sword dancing, everything really. And free admission to the Cloisters museum.

Ned? Is that YOU?!

andy --, Friday, 16 September 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Not with a mustache, f'r cryin' out loud.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Dude, that's your roommate trying to say hi to you.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

As my roommates were female, this tends to distress my gentle soul, Mr. Perry.

This is what Jimmy Buffet fans looked like in the Middle Ages...

andy --, Friday, 16 September 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

As my roommates were female, this tends to distress my gentle soul, Mr. Perry.

Hey, you were the one who said they were all into SCA; I merely made the logical inference.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

It's kind of hard to explain how surreal it is -- on one level I'm always a little horrified by the sheer obliviousness but try to be mostly amused and just take things in without too much processing. Plus I'm one of the dorks in costume, if only by default (because we do two dance sets and stay in costume in between).

But the best ren faires are the ones with, like, turkey drumsticks and tankards and fewer glaring anachronisms.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 16 September 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

"I am Harlequin!"

"I am your WORST NIGHTMARE!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 September 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

No real stories, other than a post I made elsewhere on the board last year:

Okay, on a side note and relevant to an email I just got, do I LOOK LIKE someone who wants to go to the rennaissance faire? If that's your thing, then fine, I have no problem with it, you know? But shit, do I LOOK like someone who would enjoy it? No, I fucking don't.

I mean, sure, I'll dress up as a saucy barmaid if you want, but go to the Faire? Um, no. Not now, not ever. Ask me again and I'll shove a jousting lance through thy testicles.

-- luna (luna_cee...), May 17th, 2004.

Oh god, I hope he does.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 16 September 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

I will never rag on the SCA because it was through them, one hot day at Tyson Park in Knoxville, Tennessee, when I was dubiously accompanying my best friend, who later joined the military police, that I discovered kiwis are eaten best with the SKIN ON! Thank you, gracious wench, whoever you are!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

Beowulf isn't RennFaire daze, that's like Dark Ages Conan daze.

andy --, Friday, 16 September 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

okay boring book, written in funny language, with caesuras in the middle of the page

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

Many drama arts girls at my high school had the reputation for being 'poxy', and while they often embarassing to be seen with in public and ahistoric to the point of ridicule when in their costumes, the ones I knew well were fun, saucy girls and always had good weed. On the several occasions I went to Ren Faire, the only reliably historic aspect I remember was the way the participants seemed to have omitted modern hygiene from their regimens.

Why do people dress as Klingons for these things?

Rotgutt (Rotgutt), Friday, 16 September 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

"On the several occasions I went to Ren Faire..."

That's the kind of confession I'm talking about...

I went once with my high school english class and was really disappointed in the same way I was disappointed the first time I went to a nude beach.

believe it or not I have never been to one of these.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 16 September 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

That's because you are cool and have sense, Teeny.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 16 September 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

I have, in Altamonte Springs, FL. It filled me with bitter scorn. I turned into Ignatius Reilly.

estela (estela), Friday, 16 September 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

I am not cool and have no sense.

estela (estela), Friday, 16 September 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Pure, unalloyed hate. Looking for the outside it may seem strange, but like I said in my first post up there, all it took were some overly obsessed roommates to kill any love I had for the idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

Laurel I am in NYC this weekend! I will seriously try my best to persuade girlcompanion to come along, it sounds awesome.

that I discovered kiwis are eaten best with the SKIN ON

I will try this as soon as I get home.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)

I have never been to one of these but I really like mead, it's easily my favourite alcoholic drink. How do I buy mead in New York?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

We went to one once and it had some scary recruiters with big cross of St George flags asking you to sign up to the "English Brotherhood" or some such.

Also it was shit though the guy with the tame owl was OK.

Tom (Groke), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

What is this group you're in, Laurel? A "demo" group? What's that?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

My ex worked security for a Ren Faire in Marin in the early eighties. He had to wear a green tunic and leggings. Lots of turkey drumsticks and promiscuous sex between the tunic/leggings dudes and the saucy wenches who got way too into character. I think that was the beginning of the end of our relationship, though it limped along a good many years. I just consider myself lucky that he didn't infect me with an Elizabethan STD.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Heirloom Clap.

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

When I was at Reed College in the early 90s I got no sense of Renn Fayre as being any kind of gamer dress-up-athon. Essentially it was a colossal pan-campus drug frenzy. I took a litre of orange juice, liberally dosed with shrooms, and investigated the mystery of electricity. There were no tunics to be seen.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't even know what the deal is with them. Is there any regulation? Aren't there standards? I'm shocked that your experience was tunic-less. Were there even Toads in the Hole?

Beth Parker (Beth Parker), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I thought you covered "toads in the hole" in your earlier post, Beth.

nickn (nickn), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

i remember my first ren faire distinctly. i went with a small middle school academic group and our advisor decided to harass the in-character folk by wearing a spaceman suit. our troop was greeted with screams and wailing at every corner. so needless to say, that was at first unnerving and at end thoroughly annoying.

and somehow, a friend of mine and i wandered off on our own and a 30-something man in front of a booth came up to us and said "you ladies fancy a game?"

to which we, 15 year olds, replied, "no thanks."

and then he replied with a dirty-old-man wink, "ok, well, how about game?" and he pointed at the booth. i guess that's "in character" though.

origami snail, Monday, 26 September 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

No tunics at all, you say.
