one year passes...
We went of 1 of our mighty Sterling Pounds to 2 of your puny Yankee Dollars this morning.

Due to less than promising inflation news. It's a good job we don't manufacture or export anything anymore and just whirl money round in a big tub.

Ed, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Can't wait to go to the states later this year, you will all fall at my feet in awe of my wealth!

(prob)

Ste, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 10:35 (eighteen years ago)

Exchange your cash v v soon Ste. It can't stay this good for long can it? No seriously, anyone who understand this kind of thing, can this last?

kv_nol, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:04 (eighteen years ago)

Won't the expected interest rise next month give us an even stronger pound?

onimo, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno!

kv_nol, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:05 (eighteen years ago)

The factors causing this trend (weaker economy in us causing lower interest rates, slightly overheating economy in the UK) will keep pushing this for a while.

It is the expected rate rise next month that is causing todays rises, (inflation data came out today).

Ed, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

euro, pound, dollar

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

kv_nol, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)

I've taken to watching VAS O NO VAS on the Mexican tv network (one of them anyway). The banker is a totally sexy chick and it awards go up to 5,000,000 pesos.

Abbott, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

weaker economy in us causing lower interest rates

Are you talking about US interest rates? The Fed lowers interest rates in order to fend off inflation which usually comes with a stronger economy and more jobs which leads to more spending etc.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

sorry, *raises* interest rates in order to fend off inflation

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

I hope the democrats win big

Catsupppppppppppppp dude ‫茄蕃‪, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 20:47 (eighteen years ago)

five months pass...

The Canadian dollar is currently worth 0.9993 US dollars, and will likely hit parity very soon.

abanana, Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

I have been on two holidays where the currency had parity with the British pound, or near as dammit, which was handy for knowing if I was getting good value for money. Jordan (dinar) in 2001 and Latvia (lat) in 2005. Although in the former case I was able to haggle a lot of the time anyway.

Grandpont Genie, Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

holy crap... canadian dollar probably to bounce above parity now... so this would make it the 3rd most (numerically, anyway) powerful currency in the world.

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

i see some cross-border apple store shopping in my near future

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah srsly

rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

mind you, apple have brought the prices closer together... probably not worth it once you factor in gas, etc. but hell, partying in buffalo! woo!

Rob Bolton, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

€, £, $

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

partying in buffalo! woo!

impressive!

blueski, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

I heard we were going to hit parity soon, but I didn't know that we were already at 99.9c/$1! That's insanity! I need to eBay some stuff, I reckon...

Will M., Thursday, 20 September 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

ten years pass...

http://jpkoning.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/the-ubiquitous-spanish-dollara-photo.html

This is really interesting - the ubiquity of Spanish dollars in global monetary system, also interesting details of countries adapting foreign currencies by over-stamping ("The head of a fool on the neck of an ass.") and cutting them etc

calzino, Sunday, 15 October 2017 11:21 (eight years ago)

four years pass...

What would be a better basis for global currency exchange rates than the USD? There ought to be a fairer way to do this. Could it be needs based instead? Would that create its own problems? Has anyone heard of alternatives to the USD and how to realize such a change?

youn, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 13:10 (three years ago)

This was an intriguing little story. No one made much of it but, who knows..

"29 Aug 2022 — Egypt plans to issue yuan-denominated bonds worth more than $500 million, Finance Minister Mohamed Maait told Asharq TV on Monday."

xyzzzz__, Tuesday, 27 September 2022 13:25 (three years ago)

Switching to the yuan (renminbi?) as the basis for global currency exchange would be a "meet the new boss, same as the old boss" kind of move.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 27 September 2022 16:37 (three years ago)

Maybe Egypt can get the bosses to fite amongst themselves!!
