Hey, just tell me what you've been listening to over the next week or so...did you like it etc? (just lists are cool too)

Happy Christmas ILE!

james, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

8:35pm (21/12/02) This evening, I had look in my wardrobe where I put CDs I'm fed up with or never really liked...I picked out the Fastbacks 'New Mansions in Sound' and Tullycraft 'City of Subarus'. Quite enjoyable, but they are probably going back in the wardrobe...

james, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nothing because my dad insists on playing Barbra Streisand. Help! I've been singing "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing," "Adeste Fideles," "O Holy Night," and the Hallelujah chorus ever since my choir concert last night though. I love those songs.

Maria, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

gareth, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Haven't been listening to Xmas CDs that much, for whatever reason. Odd. The exception has been the Squirrels' CD, of course. :-) Beyond that, my usual plowing through of things to review...

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

stereo total,marrianne faithful,belle and sebastion

anthony, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This Christmas ILE is listening to... my crackpot father drone on and on about reactionary garbage. I heart the holidays.

Benjamin, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My Xmas presents will FuX0r you up when I get them. Until then I'm boycotting music.

DG, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jamesmichaelward, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm only listening to Theivery Corporation and Juliana Hatfield, they fill me with happiness when I am alone in my bedroom.

HAPPY CHRISTMAS JAMES AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TOO!

rainy, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alone at Xmas? Unfun!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

helenfordsdale, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

currently sheffield electronica gurus autechre are providing the sountrack to my morning with the album amber (pinched from ed). can't be denied that i am on a folky rock tip at the moment in spite of this, and usually am playing gong, hawkwind (finally got pxr5 on vinyl, yay!)roy harper, jefferson airplane, donovan, kaleidoscope and similar. all that acoustic guitar playing i'll bet.

oh yeah, check out a-track's set on www.djscene.com, it is hidden in there somewhere on real media, and rocks the most. even uses missy elliot to good effect.

another james, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

which kaleidoscope? the david lindley band?

helenfordsdale, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this really good cd that this bloke was handing out for free at a gig i went to earlier this week. it seems to be just a compilation of cool festive themed bedroom recordings by a group of friends. listen to some of it here.

jellybean, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been scouring the radio stations for cuts off of the Destiny's Child Christmas CD. The one about all the things Beyonce's man buys her is absolutely priceless; independent woman my ass!

Dan Perry, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'Popambient 2001' = great Christmas record for the 21st century. All those little bells drowning in synth washes really go with the season. A bit of a "Who stuffed the turkey with valium?" vibe though.

Omar, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pinback, of course. And 5ive.

HEY EVERYBODY I AM HOME and I haf Yahoo messager but I don't know how it works. My "ID" hem hem is starpiekat if anyone wants to get messages from me saying "gee i don't know how this works, who are you corr" etc.

Sarah, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

kaleidoscope, the self titled album's sleeve has no band information as such, but a lindley is listed along with a feldthouse, logos and parcely on the vinyl, so i guess that is the same one. this is the only album i have but it is awesome in the extreme. i played banjo to round of an old school hardcore set at a house party t'other day. there was much rejoicing.

another james, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Belle & Sebastian, Pink Floyd (o misera me you see), George Winston, and the Vienna Boys Choir. The first are my favorite.

Maria, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't bought anything much recently and there's fuXall chance of finding anything around here, so I've just got what I broughtbac with me what I've been listening to all year: Josie + Pussycats, Helen Love, Moldy Peaches, B+S (IFYS) etc etc

Graham, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fischerspooner, Felix Da Housecat, Mum, Soviet, Ladytron. It's been a very electroclash weekend so far. And I bought the Microphones because Pitchfork told me to. It's aiight.

phil, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eno's Apollo is on high rotate on my stereo. Its ratio of filler is higher than most of my other Eno faves but I seem to like listening to it more.

Damian, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, the Pinefox has me listening to Billy Bragg now. Otherwise, today I listened to: Yo La Tengo, Souled American, Dianogah, Basement Jaxx, Neu, Baaba Maal, Timbaland, and Elastica.

Nitsuh, Saturday, 22 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nothing. xmas makes everything seem crappy.

Menelaus Darcy, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So none of the sissy namby pamby gaspy female vocalist shit that sounds like an asthma attack is imminent, I hate them all they are boring! I want eighties drama

Menelaus Darcy, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Skid Row Rool!

Yesterday, I was listening to Evan Dando.

james, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The last few records I heard - Dungeon Family (on now), Lloyd Cole 1984-1989, Basement Jaxx Rooty ("Where's Your Head At" = essential crowd-negotiating music), Wu Tang Iron Flag, The Scud Mountain Boys compilation and the Chris T-T album (both played for me by Pete).

Tom, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

LIFE'S A RIOT is good for Xmas (cf. Nitsuh).

Ewing in Lloyd shocker.

B&S strange crossover popularity upthread.

The Pines got a seasonal run-out.

Turned on R2 this am, found a strangely earnest and anxious Steve Wright.

Later: Desmond Carrington.

The Foxgloves.

Also later, surely, Phil Spector's Xmas LP.

the pinefox, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Currently Cheap Trick.

alext, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Last five things (in reverse order): The Blueprint, Roy Montgomery lp with the long title about rain, Skitz, Red House Painters and This is a Pinback Album. Stuff I will no doubt be listening to a lot over the next few days: Hood, Piano Magic, FSA, Roy Montgomery and Talk Talk. Post-rock Xmas ahoy.

RickyT, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mathias Schaffhauser's microhouse covers of Eighties Pop Hitz (Icehouse's "Hey Little Girl", Eurythmics' "Take Me To Your Heart") because they are at once chill, lush and singalong-worthy = perfect Christmas music. I bought Low's Christmas album and I very much like it but more as Low's music than as Christmas music (hence I will now be buying the band's backcatalogue).

Have been on a major De La Soul tip today after they hosted an all-night video-clip show last night and I saw all their vids. Ocassionally I forget how utterly superior "Eye Know" is to any other pop song ever and need to be reminded of it ("Eye Know" also = very good Chrissy music in summery Australia).

Old Song I've been listening to fairly constantly for the last week: Pete Rock & CL Smooth's "T.R.O.Y"

New Song I've been listening to fairly constantly for the last week: Wu-Tang Clan's "Rules".

Also: nigh on anything produced by Rockwilder and/or starring Redman.

Tim, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And the XFM/Big Issue "It's An Indie Indie Christmas" comp, obv.

Graham, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've been wandering the frosty streets of SE19 with great chunks of "Storm of Drones" and a Montaigne C20th-classical comp (which I got during the summer and never really delved into) on the MD portable. Also Bent, The Foxgloves and a couple of re-discoveries: Cath Carroll's "England Made Me" and Jennifer Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat" (I enjoyed the former a great deal, but, aside from the Van Dyke Parks-arranged "A Singer Must Die", the latter was a bit of trial).

I think there's more under the tree...

Michael Jones, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Recent listening has been of an indie rock nature and going for individual tracks and not whole albums, as I am pondering a mixtape for a friend who's been listening to a lot of nu-metal type stuff of late and I reckon she'll like some of the rockier stuff I like. Yes, I am being snotty, patronising and evangelical: must save her from her brother's metal collection! Right now I'm listening to old unlabelled tapes in the hope of finding a Finnish indie compilation, except I don't think it's in this drawer, so now I'm listening to part of an old Festive Fifty. It's just been Abba On The Jukebox, and now it's the Flaming Stars at number 18. *swims around in nostalgia*

Was going to write more about the various stuff I've been auditioning for the comp tape that will probably never happen, but it went on a bit and I suspect nobody cares. This does not mean that I won't post it later, mind. (Sorry, Tom! Me and my bad indie, I know...)

[Damn, I saw two of the people involved in that cd of jellybean's at a party recently and I didn't bother them because I figured they wouldn't really want to talk to me. If I'd thought that a quick "hello, how's the music going?" might result in free cds I would probably have been mercenary enough to inflict myself upon them.]

Blimey, Kandy Pop and Kenickie, numbers 15 and 14. People only slightly older than me. What have I done in those five years? Spent them all thinking, "Yeah, one day I'll record irritatingly perky indie-pop singles too!", met some other people who might have joined me, failed to do anything, lost touch with them all, not even done anything more worthwhile like getting the degree I was actually supposed to be there for instead... I suck. So I'm about to listen to the New Bad Things. John Cale SUUUCKED! *And* he was Welsh. (Ha ha, what's this, Tampasm? The Period Pains? Heh, now I feel better about those five years.)

Rebecca, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bugger. I abandon post version 1 for reasons of ridiculous verbosity, and what happens? A monstrosity that's probably even longer than 1 was. Why do I ramble so? Keep it simple, STUPID. (Aww man, Godco.) Sorry.

Rebecca, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

As hard as it maybe to believe I like your ramblings, Rebecca! Stop apologising already.

RickyT, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have been listening to all of the 2001 releases I missed out on. Right now... Green Velvet's "Whatever".

Honda, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

RickyT is a man of true words.

Tim, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rebecca, my passive half-arsed inkling to meet you is quickly turning to stalker like obsession, and you are doing nothing to help stop this.

(And your apologies are also equally endearing)

Graham, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have been perusing through my dad's record collection. so yesterday i listened to "rubber soul". tonight i will probably listen to some byrds and some kinks and some rolling stones. but mostly i will be practising accompanying my little brother's clarinet solo of "silent night" with my guitar, to entertain ma and pa tomorrow.

di, Sunday, 23 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

David Sylvian at home and DMX in the car, pretty much exclusively, for about a week. I've been finding myself deeply moved by both and am hoping that it's just the holidays.

gareth, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jess, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

lali puna are cool!

james, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Aw, gee. *blush* Thanks. I just get embarrassed/annoyed by the way my answers are invariably twenty times longer than anyone else's. It nearly makes more sense when you consider that people with jobs post lots of smaller posts during the day and then I go online and try to reply to the entire thread in one post in the evening, but then my posts never have twenty times as much actual interesting content.

What's that Hrvatski cd, Jess? Oiseaux, or something else? And tell me about the Scud Mtn Boys compilation, I think I need to buy it to make me feel less bad about selling Massachusetts. Does it have Grudge Fuck on it?

And that Roy Montgomery title is a great title. I miss getting emails from this guy I lost touch with, they always had great titles of obscure and deeply cool records as their subject lines, and that was one of them. Plus I remain hungry for new records and I want to hear the 7" he - email bloke, not RM - recorded, but I've found somewhere online that still claims to have it, so hopefully I can buy it. Yay.

I have just got a stack of cheap promos from eBay including Giant Robot, British Meat Scene and the band which supposedly later become Mclusky, plus some cds I lent someone have been returned, and Rough Trade sent me my MBICR album and a 12" mini-album with tracks from Max Tundra and Skitz, so that's tonight's listening. Actually the 12" probably isn't because I've still been too lazy to fix my rec deck. I may also stomp angrily on a cd that was among the batches I won on ebay by Lowcraft, who are an INSULT to (non-)words that sound a bit like my surname. Grr! Perhaps I will play conkers with that cd and the Annie Christian one.

I've done it again. I will attempt not to apologise.

Rebecca, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, this audiogalaxy is cool! i got a nice Alison's Halo track i lost when i lent their cd to someone. i too would like to know more about hrvatski

gareth, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, it's oiseaux. i've had it on cd-r for about a year and listened to it approx. once. (i tried to pick things i havent heard much.) so i think when i go back downstairs i shall have another listen, and report back. i remember it being not what i expected at the time (more along the lines of his remix of six-ought- six's "catstep"), but time will tell whether i like it more now.

jess, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK we have relaxed the music embargo. hey jess i played that MP3 track of yrs 7 or 8 times in a row last night. mainly 'cause i couldnt figure out how to play anything else. but, it is good. also : heliocentric groove band, minus 2, righteous sinner singers.

the best compliment i've ever received.

jess, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rebecca, selling _Massachusetts_ is a crime for which there is no atonement (unless you, y'know, buy another copy). The 2CD compilation actually puts together their first 2 albums (_Pine Box_ & _Dance the Night Away_) - it's a fine set of songs, and a bit more lively than you'd think (though I'm still partial to the numerous bits of somber brilliance to be found on _Mass._). I think Tom owns it simply because of the Olivia Newton-John cover. (Or maybe he's a "Gypsies, Tramps, & Thieves" type of guy.)

David Raposa, Monday, 24 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

system of a down, broadcast, and fuzzbox. and the jay-z unplugged.

Yesterday on the way to and from work I listened to 16 Lovers Lane. The new person played the Beatles on his computer, so I got to listen to 'Here Comes The Sun'.

I meant to get the Jackson 5 Christmas album this year but didn't get around to it.

anthony, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A record I should have got ages ago. I still have the memories of The Pinefox careering around his bedroom attempting to convey the wonder that is Lloyd Cole and The Negatives, and now I see. Much of it is spectacular, especially for a silly nouvea guitar geek like myself.

Ally C, Tuesday, 25 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Becks version of "your cheatin' heart" rocks. i'm still undecided about the hank III song. shock of the album is sheryl crows fantastic version of lonesome blues.

Ronan, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Today I bought NURSE WITH WOUND "chance meeting with blablabalbalbalab", White Stripes "white blud sells" and 4Hero. I wanted to find that damn Elton John record which has tiny dancer on it but feh-ing'ell why don't the shops stock so little elton records? (By the way: I can't seem to find my Elton John records. WHY OH WHY?) Oh and BMRC record. At the recordshop I had to explain to my cousin who the gang of four and wire were/are.
Still haven't listened to'em though. I like that arty farty bobby conn more (and more each day). it's a skewed memory of cabaret disco punk.
I also quite like Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park. I need to go into rehab. Replace my dirty blood with cool taste.

helenfordsdale, Wednesday, 26 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Nobody said the Pogues song! I played it surreptitiously 2wice for family.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

this crimbo i was listening to my brother's own compositions based on So Solid Crew. he is now styling himself the So Nautical Crew and singing ditties like "21 seconds to go, 21 seconds to go, you wanna know when my cannon's gonna blow i got 21 seconds to go" and something about scrubbing down the poop deck and no-one knows where x marks the spot. young people are confusing.

katie, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the new additions to my LP collection: The TRoggs, Patti Smith "horses", two tall dwarfs albums, straitjacket fits first ep and an axemen record. yikes i spent a lot of money at the record store today, please don't tell the MoE who have not stopped paying me even though i no longer work for them!

Sarah, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

indeed they have, and a fine song in it's original too, except I fell for the chancer on audiogalaxy who had for some reason also listed the OS version as Nick Drake, which I had to download of course....stupidly.

chris, Thursday, 27 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one brother got me per my wishes Melville by Rheostatics and the other by my wishes last year got me Clayton Park by Thrush Hermit. Even if you have heard Thrush Hermit's earlier album I urge to listen to this one, light years better then anything out of Halifax other then Twice Removed and possibly Smeared.
