Bill Griffith's "Zippy": C or D?

i've never been able to decide if i like this strip. i mean, i like it in theory, but in practice i find it hard to finish reading even one of em at a time without my mind drifting off, maybe because the "point" of each episode seems to be exactly the same. the thought of reading a whole BOOK of them is kinda terrifying! but it's pretty good compared to 99% of everything else on the comics page these days, i guess.

"Yoo Hoo, Mr.Crazy Man!!" hahahahahaha! Classic! When I was 12.

Ooh, I freakin hate that comic.

Definitely a matter of context, that strip.

Word.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Classic, but I kinda wish he'd drop back to 2-3 Zippy strips per week and do some more non-Zippy stuff. There was a lot of stuff from the Arcade days that was great, without a pinhead in sight.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 18 September 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

Ugh. I mean, I liked it for a while, and that period of liking it coincided with that period of my life when I thought almost everyone in America and practically every aspect of pop culture was, like, totally mindless, man. Now whenever Griffy pops up snarling all that "people are stupid sheep" stuff it just reads as patronizing and condescending to me, and the Idiot Prole Diner Guys/Giant Statuary themes have kind of run dry.

disco violence (disco violence), Monday, 19 September 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

(Then again, I keep forgetting that Griffy and Zippy are part of that whole ego/id sort of thing, like one man's duality. Still, it's not exactly populist.)

it really was a hoot to me when i was 12 or 13. along with doper dan, the freak brothers, fat freddy's cat, omaha the cat dancer, all those guys. flakey floont. mr natural. it didn't matter. i mean, if i would actually send away for doper dan comix i obviously would read anything. slow death. bizarre sex. hiroshima gen. weirdo. creepy. eerie. heavy metal. epic. i didn't care what it was. it was all weird and i wanted all weird. but i haven't read it in a zillion years and i almost can't believe that he still does it.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 19 September 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

can we please get at least one picture of zippy? (i don't know how.)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 19 September 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I had a zippy book. I think it was from the 70's and it was REALLY FUNNY!!!

Not just all non-sequiturs like now.

I don't know what happened to it.

Any merit it might have accrued has been totally wiped out by that Nickelback song.

one year passes...

Zippy runs in the San Diego Reader sometimes so I don't see them all (I think he's still doing several strips per week), but it is sometimes still very good:
