i always go past it on the train, and i sometimes think i'd like to live their when i am older.

mind you, i also think that about Filey and The Isle Of Sheppey...

Do you mean East Retford in Nottinghamshire? I've been there once.

yes, the GNER goes through it, but the station is just called Retford, it kind of looks nice. and i seem to remember that a fall fanzine may have been run from there once.

There used to be a venue there in the late 70s/early 80s - 'the Porterhouse' - where all the lowly touring bands passed through.

When I first travelled from King's Cross to Leeds back in 1989 I was surprised that such an unimportant place was on a mainline (see also Newark and Grantham). All the big places in the East Midlands (i.e. Nottingham / Leicester / Derby) are on the line from St Pancras, which of course doesn't go on to the North East and Scotland.

Mind you, you could say the same about Brockenhurst (little more than a village in the New Forest) having not only hourly trains to London, but also regular trains to Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh etc.

But doesn't Brockenhurst station serve pretty much all of the New Forest area? Anyway, with the amount of money flowing through the area, maybe all the people pay for the station to be there ;) Anyway, there is a bit of a tradition in this country of stations serving completely useless places, isn't there?

like Ribblehead

re. Brockenhurst:

I'm sure it does serve all the New Forest, what's known as a "railhead". Just weird for such a small place to have trains to the capitals of England and Scotland every day.

Isn't Ribblehead on the Settle and Carlisle? I've done that journey, 12 years ago. In fact I'm reminded it was probably the exact day that the episode of "Interceptor" I just recorded off Challenge TV was originally shown. Or whatever.

I changed trains there quite recently, you do sometimes if you go to Sheffiekd from Kings cross, it was dark and cold and you have to walk about half a mile between the east coast main line and the lincoln sheffield line there.

retfords is a shit-kicking small town near Worksop, only major attraction = public school well known for sports. seriously, it's a horrible, middle-of-nowhere place. worse than Chesterfield even!

one month passes...
I grew up in Retford. There is not much to do. It's a small market town. Would never go back to live there and certainly wouldn't raise my children in Retford.

Retford is without a doubt the centre of all thinking, to those with not so nice things to say, take a long look at your sorry lives.
It is without a doubt quaint yet modern, quiet yet busy, has top class access to all major routes and most of all the people are by majority Retford born and bred which makes us unique!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Porterhouse is still going strong but is now in much better condition playing much better music and attracting much better people.
Finally when God made England he wanted the centre of it to be so much better than the rest - Retford - and the rubbish that was left over was swept to one side, the worse the rubbish the further it was swept!
Thankyou, enough said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
