2005 NFL SEASON THREAD

baseball has a board on ILX, but the NFL is sorely under-represented!

my Bears--a team that looks like they could actually have a shot at the division crown what with the combined awfulness of the Packers, Lions, and Vikes so far--beat up on Detroit 38-6 today. Who needs Cedric Benson when we have Thomas Jones and Muhsin Muhammed?? Kyle Orton...hmmm...dunno about him yet.

The Eagles look like the team to beat in the NFC, with the possible exception of the Falcons. I imagine the two teams will meet in the NFC Championship game. Maybe the Panthers, too, they took out New England today.

The AFC...Cincinnati is looking like one of the top three teams in the conference, and they deserve it. The other two? Probably NE and Pittsburgh. NE-Pitt next week will be a great game.

fearless playoff predictions, 6 from each conference:

New England
Indy
Pittsburgh
Cincy
KC
San Diego (despite the 0-2 start)

Philly
Atlanta
Carolina
Dallas
Chicago
Tampa Bay

Is tomorrow the first time ever that there are two games on a Monday night?

Keith C (lync0), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

i think the birds were kinda pissy after losing the opener judging by their performance today

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

i can't believe how horrible Minnesota looks. New Orleans, Atlanta, Green Bay, Chicago, and Carolina are the next five teams they've gotta face. I can't believe they'll win more than two of those games.

gear (gear), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

haha the really depressing thing since moving to bmore is that i have seen far more eagles memorabilia here than ravens

strng hlkngtn (dubplatestyle), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

There have two games on a Monday night a few times. The basic reasons have been either: extreme weather cancels the Sunday game -- it gets played Monday night (such as a hurricane hits Miami a couple years ago); or, baseball team that shares the same stadium makes the baseball playoffs and has to use the stadium on Sunday, so NFL goes to Monday (I *think* this happened a couple years back with Twins/Vikes.)

Lions completely blew. I'm off the kool-aid now. but Gear, please, the Bears weren't as good as that score indicates. The Lie-downs handed that one to them on a silver platter; mistake piling upon mistake. Bears D did live up to the billing though. Very very impressive.

So uh, Minnesota will be FINE without Randy, right?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

Art Donovan Sez: NFL 2005-2006! Now! Thread! (bonus: NFL fantasy league yes/no)

I'll just copy my prediction for my Carolina Panthers there. Slight misstep with my week one and two predictions, the swapped, but I'm sure I'll be 100% correct for the rest. And I still think Minnisota is going to come back to make the playoffs.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

fuck it, I'm basically a Saints fan this season anyway.

Cinci looks really good. Indy might finally have the whole package. Shaping up to be a fun season already. yay parity.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

Mike Tice must go.

M. V. (M.V.), Monday, 19 September 2005 01:58 (twenty years ago)

i don't think the bears are good, mind you, but they might be good enough. defense and the running game! homerism might cloud my judgement, but maybe i will be proven right.

gear (gear), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:03 (twenty years ago)

well you know, I *know* homerism is clouding my judgement that the Leos AREN'T completely putrid. but seriously, I only saw the Bears sustain two TD drives. The rest was like one interception for a short field TD, one interception returned for a TD and one punt return for a TD. That's called playing against a crappy team or a team that has given up. The Defense looks really really good, no question, but I'd still have questions about the Bears' O...

One thing for sure, the NFC Norris is totally up for grabs..

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

The bears always have a couple of games early games where they tee off, and Anthony Thomas will have a few games where he goes completely mental (though that'll be hard with Cedric Benson getting more and more carries), but that's just to make your heartbreak all the more exquisite.

That said, they certainly look like the best team in the NFC North after two games.

Trust me, I'm Buffalo guy.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:12 (twenty years ago)

Mike Tice must go.

Every time I see his name I do a double take, cause there's a friend of mine from UCLA days called Mike Tice. Thankfully they are not the same person.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:20 (twenty years ago)

There is no way the bears win 5 games this year.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Jury's still out on Cincy I think. So far they've looked good against the "define 8-8, except they'll go 5-11" Browns and the "look ma no Moss" Vikes.

They do have a very friendly schedule though.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Anthony Thomas is a Cowboy now.
Thomas Jones is the number-one back.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 19 September 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

stupidly enough i picked up the lions d/st.

anybody in nyc come by daddy's tomorrow night for mnf doubleheader. i'll be wearing my saints shirt.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 19 September 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

damn Thomases and lack of sleep - Thomas Jones of course. muchas gracias!

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

The Chargers are infuriating me.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 19 September 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

The test for the Bengals will be when they face the Steelers, who have also looked pretty good in the first two weeks. They play on October 23rd.

That Colts and Jaguars game was one of the hardest hitting games I have seen in a while. There was a half dozen times someone got their helmet knocked off during the game. Byron Leftwich is either tough or crazy, as he got freaking pounded, once having to leave the game and then he limped around for the remainder.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:27 (twenty years ago)

We got the GB/Cleveland game yesterday...it was a brilliant triumph of announcers, to be totally honest. I mean we're talking 9 seconds left in the game, GB down by two scores, and they're STILL talking about it like "It is still possible that Brett Favre can pull a giant unicorn out of his ass and get the power up and win the game! Don't change the channel! It's about to get FUCKED UP in this joint!" And we sat on the couch and watched it to the end, because they were so insistant that if we turned off this pointless game between two teams who won't do better than 8-8, we would seriously miss the greatest thing that might ever happen in the history of the world. I take my hat off to Simms & Co.

Also Brett Favre passing the 50,000 mark, good on him but holy shit I didn't realize just how far Marino was ahead of his nearest 50k+ competitors in the yardage marker...wtf??! I mean I knew he was ahead but...62,000 yards?? How is he 11,000 yards higher than Elway? I am amazed the man's arm hasn't fallen off.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 19 September 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

Actually Brett Favre did pull a unicorn out of his ass. Then he threw it at 70mph into his own team's Gatorade tank. It was an honest mistake - in a conventional hurry-up offensive situation, you expect to be able to put that ass unicorn into your own Gatorade tank and see results - but the Browns' D was there on Sunday and that - that didn't make very much sense to anyone, any of it.

TOMBOT, Monday, 19 September 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

How is he 11,000 yards higher than Elway?

Marino consistently vetoed any attempt by management to establish a running game.

I MADE THIS UP, BUT THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY LESS TRUE

Check it: The Marino era began in 1983. In the 1986 season, the Dolphins ran 1011 plays. How many times did they run the ball? 349.

From 1983 through 1999, Marino's final season, the Dolphins had exactly one 1000-yard back: Karim-Abdul Jabbar (remember him?) in 1996, when Marino was already clearly in decline.

Marino also had the benefit of playing in Miami, as opposed to Denver or Green Bay where cold, wind, and snow can impact late-season game plans.

Granted, when you've got a Marino, you use him.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

REAP WHAT YOU SOW, MINNESOTA! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA fuckers.

Here's hoping New England falls into a gigantic pit of suckitude so I don't have to deal with obnoxious post-season behavior this year.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:48 (twenty years ago)

No, I mean roger, I am well aware that Miami actually, little known to most people, actually eliminated the position of running back between 1984-1992, but still. I mean, jesus. Shouldnt the man's arm have fallen off 3 years ago?

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

The key to Marino's longevity: Isotoner gloves.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

His throwing arm should be the size of his torso (like Rafael Nadal's serving arm, look at him the next time he plays tennis).

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Monday, 19 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

i'll bet peyton manning breaks that yardage record

Anyway best headline I've seen all day, Washington Post: "It's Not A Rivalry If The Redskins Never Win"

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 19 September 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

I watched that Browns game Sunday with the TV sound off and the local announcers calling the game. With 14 seconds left I turned to my friend and said, "I can't believe I'm still worried Cleveland's going to lose".

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 19 September 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

With 4 seconds left I was expecting that Lombardi statue to come alive ala Jason and the Argonauts and recover the onside kick.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 19 September 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

"Hi, this is Phil Simms coming to you live from Lambeau Field, where the ghost of Reggie White just sacked Trent Dilfer 17 times at the 4 second mark, resulting in multiple fumbles which the ghost of Reggie White then recovered and scored 6 touchdowns in 3 seconds. Thansk for watching! Now let's go live to Greg in NY."

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Monday, 19 September 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

By completely irrelevant comparison, Nolan Ryan's estimated career pitches thrown total (around 64,000 pitches) adds up to approximately 38,000 yards and some change.

TOMBOT, Monday, 19 September 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Course, passing yards includes YAC, so it's not as though Marino's balls traveled 62,000 miles in the air.

But then Nolan Ryan's career totals would be lower if Bruce Smith kept driving him into the mound every time he threw the ball.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 18:42 (twenty years ago)

that may be my dirtiest post ever

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

Worst visual of the day: Bruce Smith raping Nolan Ryan over a pitcher's mound.

Passing yards include YAC, sure, but what about incomplete passes? Depending on what his completion ratio was, the total yards traveled of passes he threw could be close to 100,000 yds

jedidiah (jedidiah), Monday, 19 September 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Dan Marino's balls were lovingly cradled in the hands of an eligible receiver 4,967 times in his career, for 61,361 passing yards.

So 12.4 yards per completion x 8,358 attempts = 103,639 yards at 100% completion.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

Are the Bills sticking with their old uniforms? They are awesome.

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

From your mouth to God's ears, man. Their regular unis are teh suck.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

dunno about you guys but there's nothin' i like more than kickin' back on a sunday, watchin' some bro grab a ball from between another bro's legs, and then toss it

gear (gear), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Robin Ventura tried that trick on Nolan Ryan when he was well into his 40s and the old man pounded him.

I wouldn't blame Marino for a lack of a running game or the fact the Dolphins had no defense. Don Shula ran the club all but the very last years of Marino's career and he should get a big share of that failure. Marino's arm kept Shula in a job long beyond the peak of his coaching success. Marino also didn't draft Sammie Smith and some of the other draft bombs that the Dolphins tried to put at running back.

I think Marino is the best QB I ever saw play. Montana won a bunch of Superbowls on teams that were dominating at everything. Montana also made a whole lot of his name throwing six yard swing passes to Jerry Rice and then Rice breaking them for 70 yard TDs. John Elway was a better athlete and could really run when he was young, but I think he gets a bit too much credit for winning those two rings at the end of his career. Marino had the best arm and could throw deep with more accuracy than anyone I ever saw play. I think the Dolphin offensive line was made to look better than it was because he could drop back two steps and throw 20 yard lasers with such accuracy.

earlnash, Monday, 19 September 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

No questioning Marino's greatness. I believe this all started in awe of same. Sammie Smith was actually second only to the great Mark Higgs in ground production during the High Marino era.

That said, I'm not sure that the talent of the backs drafted is the issue. More to do with a line built for pass-blocking and a lack of interest in running the ball.

fwiw, with the golden boy netting 7.3 yards PER PASSING ATTEMPT, even Chuck Knox would have had a hard time calling for a 2.5-yard handoff.

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 19 September 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

Roger, I'm pretty sure the shit-ass quality of the backs behind Marino is the issue.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

This may be an unusual opinion, but I think Steve Young was a better quarterback than Marino, my man Dan Fouts, Montana, Elway... anyone from my era. He just had something, and I would like to have seen what he could have done if he didn't have to spend 4 years as Montana's caddy, 2 years in Tampa, and 2 years with the LA Express. That's seven prime years, and if not for those concussions, he could have played for 5 more years. Montana reminded me of a (much) better Kurt Warner... a very solid quarterback aided immeasurably by the players and system around him. I got the feeling that Young could have made a mediocre team a contender, and I never got that feeling from Montana.

Feel free to set me straight on this. I have no statistical analyses to back this up, just a feeling I've always had.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

I thought the Giants-Saints game was supposed to move to ESPN and the other game was supposed to come on ABC. I have Saints-Giants on ABC, Saints-Giants (blacked out) on ESPN, and Boys-Skins on ESPN's alternate feed (DirecTV ch. 210). Mike Patrick sounded confused about what was going where, just before halftime.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

didn't he say saints-giants would be broadcast on ABC in gulf states and new york, and the skins-cowboys everywhere else?

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:48 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I missed that part. Weird, this is the first time I've ever seen ESPN Prime blacked out.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:50 (twenty years ago)

gear - even though they all suck, you need an NFC West team in the playoffs (Rams, 49ers, Cardinals, or Seahawks)

I think I may need a bathroom break? (wetmink2), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

I agree with polyphonic.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

(long xpost)

Steve Young was a fantastic athlete, but better than Marino? erm, no. Who was second-best is a more difficult question.

Let's agree that at least part of those years spent as "Montana's caddy" gave a very smart guy an opportunity to learn Walsh's system intimately, setting the table for a seamless transition. It's a luxury few young QBs are likely to have ever again. imho one aspect of Steve Young's greatness was precisely knowing where his bread was going to be buttered (i.e., having a Jerry Rice to throw to) and sticking it out with clipboard in hand.

If not for those concussions, he could have played for 5 more years.

But this is why superhuman (and I mean that) durability is one of the prerequisites for greatness. Curtis Martin > Terrell Davis. Marino's 13 seasons are in and of themselves an extraordinary feat - four times the average NFL career - what he managed to do in those seasons even more so.

Roger, I'm pretty sure the shit-ass quality of the backs behind Marino is the issue.

It's not as though Shula didn't know how to run the ball (Larry Csonka to thread), but he (wisely and rightly) built that offense to capitalize on Marino's abilities. The backs were there to keep defenses just honest enough and occasionally to punch it in at the goal line (though frankly not too often, since that would have pissed off the golden boy, who did like to get his numbers).

Miami could have had Earl Campbell and Jim Brown in the backfield; you still can't gain yards on the ground if you don't hand off the ball. 66% of the time, Marino's Fins didn't.

That's all I'm-a say about that. Hell, I'm a Buffalo fan. I think Jim Kelly was the greatest QB ever. A Fucking Leader Of Fucking Men that guy was, raised on the same West PA dirt as Marino. Didn't have the laser, though his arm was plenty strong, but was the last NFL QB to call his own plays, and never acted as though he was bigger than the team.

The classic Kelly gesture was walking off the field on a failed third down effort, ripping off his chin strap in disgust at himself for letting down the fans and the team. No one has ever done it better.

The classic Marino gesture was walking off the field on a third-down incompletion, pinch-faced with rage and pointing a finger at whichever receiver was hapless enough to be in the vicinity of the missed throw. Hey, for all I know Marino never DID throw a bad ball, but he was always quick to blame the other guy in public.

Marino was exceptional. Probably the best to have played the position to this day. But he was also greedy and self-centered. I'd like to think that's why Kelly went to more Super Bowls...

FUCK YEAH SKINS

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

On the one hand, the business bet on Parcells v. Gibbs has led to Ally and I being dumped from my office's $1000 survival pool. On the other hand, fuck Dallas! On the third hand, I'm completely ambivalent about the Redskins themselves. I'm much more interested in the Giants after watching THAT game last night, just fix those stupid mistakes on D, dude, what in the hell.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:08 (twenty years ago)

I take credit for the Redskins win; there has not been an instance in the history of my VERY STORIED AND LONG betting career in which I ditched out my instinctual first game pick and decided to go with a "sure shot" in which my sure shot found a way to fuck themselves in the ass for no good reason with 4 minutes left in the game.

I've been saying for like 2 weeks now, which is like forever, that no one gives the Giants enough credit! That game was a lot closer than the score indicates though.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

Horn made some sweet, sweet catches last night. Too bad Brooks was playing like someone had a gun to his head half the time.

yeah, obviously im excited about the redskins win last night, ive been a huge fan for years.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

I imagine it must have been at least some consolation to Saints fans that the dude throwing actual COMPLETIONS into heavy coverage last night was from NOLA too.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

haha living in DC for nine years has made me come to hate the redskins. never before had i ever found myself rooting for the cowboys!

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Living in NY my entire life made me come to be confused about the existence of the Redskins. Like kind of, oh yeah, them, how cuet! In some ways I felt bad for them, kinda being stuck as played in our northern media as Gretchen Mol to NY's Gwyneth Paltrow and Dallas's Charlize Theron but then they beat the Bills in the Super Bowl and pity is, quite frankly, for the weak and morally gormless. So they can go fuck themselves.

Not as hard as Dallas can, mind you.

Allyzay knows a little German (allyzay), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)
