You have no set personality. You only have personas that change depending on who you interact with. Discuss.

Seems like a strong conclusion. Wouldn't it be more accurate -- at least based on my own experience -- to say that there are some parts of your overall personality you consciously play up more depending on who you're with/talking to/interacting with/etc., but which does not preclude the core person at the center?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 15 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

many selves, ala onion, nothing at centre, read foucault for further info.

That is very true. There are different masks for different people that I meet. Most people haven't met all of the real me although the masks I wear nowadays are much thinner and easier to penetrate than those of a few years back.

I'm down with Foucault on the onion bit. But much of the rest of his theories seem a bit questionable.

I've with Marvin and Tanny on Onions. As for personality role shifts its difficult to say within a stable group fo friends where your personality is generally the same.

I can be terribly shy when I am not with people I know, but I can also be extremely aggressive. And moody too which also shifts said personality.

I'm with Ned on this one- I think there are some central characteristics, personality components, that will exist regardless of your current interaction. Just don't ask me to name them.

I am whoever you say I am

mark s, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you weren't why would you say you were?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think that's pretty damn true. Thing is which is the real personality, is it the shy, retiring bookish type or the earnest, hard working type or the mad eyed sweary beermonster or the suave, urbane sophisticate. Problem is trying to sort the right personality to the to the right people.

Billy Dods, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think everyone has one personality which is interpreted by others through the twin filters of their personalities and external stimuli. People are really simple; it's just life which is so complicated that it causes them to act in startling and/or unpredictable ways.

Dan Perry, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think filters is the best way to describe it .

anthony, Monday, 16 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My Momus, Radiohead, Sandy Denny and DMX personae are, to say the least, utterly different.

But I think I still have a set personality. My friends always say I have, anyway, and in them I shall trust.

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Is your Momus persona my Oscar Wilde Persona ? ie Cold, Arch, Cynical but with a deeply wounded soul .

anthony, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Robin, I demand a sample of your DMX persona.

Patrick, Tuesday, 17 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)
